Utah!

Ok guys----My DH went to the Steve Regan in Logan and sure enough the DE was 24.39, 50 lbs, food grade. Crazy! If anybody lives up around here that is the place :) Thanks again Birdman. You always have great ideas/advice.

UtahChickenDad----Just thought I would post this, I found out the hard way. If you get the shavings be sure not to get Cedar, only pine. I thought the Cedar smelled better so I went ahead and spread it all over then found out the chickens get sick from it. Woops! Luckily I found out quick enough and got it changed and did not have problems. I asked my vet and he confirmed. Also I saw you were saying eggs in September.....I got mine last spring (April), and my GSL laid at 17 weeks (August), I was so excited! The others started at 20 weeks and up. The last one (EE) started at 25 weeks. So you should have eggs by July at least! Maybe even late June depending on your breeds!

SDWarren--Good Luck----hope all goes through for you! So exciting getting chickens.

One of these is Lisa's baby. Ok Lisa.. you pick. I had polish on the one the other day, but it has worn off..saw this other one today and said, you need some polish too!

Throwing this one in to share what my son that is still with us brought home from work last night...aww, a sweetheart of a teen.

Wendy, just checked out your cam just in time to see the chest bumping. It looks like they pretty much like to stay together too.
One looks like a girl for sure. The one with the wider wing span while laying flat on the body.
I think I can see a girl in your BLRW's too.
You have some pretty babies. I am keeping one of my BLRW's. I only have two here now, trying to decide which one to keep I know I said I liked the more red, but the other blue one is stealing my heart away! Such a sweetheart.

SDWarren, good luck with your inspection. What breeds and names does your daughter have picked out?

Red, I am in charge of the chicks after they're hatched, which is why I'm so choosy on breeds. If I didn't have to deal with it, I'd just get barnyard mix. As it is, I'll end up selling most of them.

Cynthia, beautiful babies! And beautiful flowers. What a sweet son.

Oh, forgot to mention, I do use straw on the ground in my run in the winter so it doesn't get too boggy.

I plan on getting some DE this spring, it may be worth the drive to Logan at that price.

Yeah, I think I have several girls in this bunch. One of the lavenders is still bigger. Is that the one you think is a girl? I'm still not sure, but i do feel like at least one is a girl. I think I have 2-3 girls in my BLRW chicks, but I didn't really try to feather sex them. I'm 95% sure the one I had to help out is a girl.

Cynthia--they are both so cute. I still love the one on the left. Unless you think 'she' is a 'he' haha! Have you sold the rest yet? I still think I have one lav girl and one lav boy. The big one has a wider comb and I can see it starting to come upward too....the little one has no comb it all it is completely hidden in her feathers....however, the bigger one seems to be feathering faster, a tiny bit? Isn't that usually the girl that does it? They look so different I feel pretty sure I have one of each. That comb had me convinced....but I don't know for sure. The bigger ones legs are getting pretty thick too. I wish I had more experience looking at these little guys so I could tell better. I am going to post pics of these lavs....
Bigger One. Comb looking boyish...

Smaller one. Comb tiny....

Together---Big one on left.

What do you guys think? That little one stands on the feeder all day long, pooping all over it. If I move her off she gets mad
because she is trying to jump out and it makes her taller :)

That is a wider comb. And look how that tail of the one on the right is sticking right out there. That's how mine is doing, and now being able to compare with your two, I'm thinking I just may have a girl. I just have the one now. The others went pretty quick.
Hey, did you see those two Australorp I posted. Ha, you are supposed to pick one out. I am also going by the comb, and wings this time. Can do with the comb easier with these, because the Australorps have good sized combs, even the girls, but the boys, have a lot larger comb..and some are showing more comb than others. I actually think I have more girls than boys in this bunch..that's a switch. These two have very small combs compared to the ones that look like cockerels.
So, pick one!
Oh, and the other Ameraucanas are supposed to hatch day after tomorrow. Hoping to see some pips tomorrow sometime.
My other EE's will go into the bator that I am hatching them in tonight. Will get them set, and tomorrow is officially lock down for them.

Ok Cynthia, the left one will be Ozzie :) Thanks! And about this little lav here........If anybody on here is interested in a (quoting breeder) "purebred lavendar Ameraucana Rooster bred from excellent blood lines " let me know. Her Roosters are beautiful....username "bargain" from Garry Farms if you want to look her up. If roosters did not crow, this little guy would be mine :D I will wait a few weeks then post him here first then KSL if anyone is interested.

Now about these next eggs.....2 more days right? Oh I just saw you posted that. So I will be watching to see what comes of those little buggers!! Come on Blue!!! In Logan we say "Go Big Blue"!! Watch them all be black..lol.

The chest bumping is great Sphinx! I saw them doing it....mine have not gone there, just still jumping up and down to get out. The little one wants OUT. NOW.

And also, what a sweet surprise from your son!

One of these is Lisa's baby. Ok Lisa.. you pick. I had polish on the one the other day, but it has worn off..saw this other one today and said, you need some polish too!

Lisa, that one on the left does have more wing feathers, by the looks of things. Don't the males have a stronger flight capability than the females when they're little like that? Whatever their genders, though, they're cute.

SDWarren: Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

bird-man: Thanks for the tip on that place! I've been needing to get some DE, so I'll look them up.

Sphynx: If you're up for it, I could give you a few of the fertile eggs from my girls. That way, I could take the chicks afterward and you wouldn't have to worry about finding homes for them. If you want to do this, just let me know when you need the eggs by so that I can save a few.

Red, that sounds great. I have 3-4 teachers that expressed an interest in hatching, so I'll see what the schedule looks like. I know I'll be doing one in April. The preschoolers don't care as much. Need to double check with the other two.

I only have room for 7 eggs, so it shouldn't take too much saving for that. Once I have a better idea, I'll definitely let you know.

Lisa, your pics got me curious, so I tried to do the same thing. I thought it would make for an interesting comparison. There's a significant difference in size between my two. The smaller one weighs 2 1/4 oz, while the other weighs 2 7/8. You can really see the size difference here. Granted, the smaller one is hunching down a little, but still!

And here's a close up of the combs. They both seem bigger than Lisa's. Yikes!

What do you think?

Funny how they are all doing their own thing with growth and combs. I guess time will tell.....I thought both of yours looked girly when we came to visit....they were close to the same size then too weren't they? My big one was always bigger, but now taller and just looking manly to me lol! Crossing fingers for ya to have one 'chic' chick at least. Maybe we can compare pics again in a week or so and see what differences they have. Darn things need to have the gender stamped across their heads when they hatch :p
