Oh Lisa, I am so sorry for your loss. I know you just LOOOOOOVED that girl. I don't blame you for running into the house- there was a FIRE! Dumb dog. You're an awesome chicken mom.

Cynthia, darling babies! Love them.

I'm going to set eggs at my son's preschool on 3/21. Trying to decide what to set.

I got my buyer's house under contract this weekend, I'm really happy about that.

Congrats on your house contract! I tried getting a school just down the street from us interested in hatching eggs..the girl there just said, ok, I'll tell them. I'm thinking I should go try and talk with someone else..there has to be some teacher that would love to have this opportunity! That's great you have a class to do this with.

Lisa! I wondered why we hadn't seen you today. I'm sooo sorry! I want to give you a free bantam! So bad. I wish you lived closer. I have some Silkies coming, from a couple of great breeders..the ones that are ready to hatch on the 25th are going to be, white, buff, splash, or blue. I can save one for you as long as you need. You are not a bad chicken mom. If I saw smoke coming from my house, I think I would rather save my house than even worry about the chickens. I love chickens, and I don't think I would be a bad chicken lover if I wanted to save my house! I know, it still hurts. I can't imagine seeing one of my dogs with my Baily! Oh man!
Feel better. Just keep busy making that coop and run for your other girls. I just feel so bad for you. If you would rather have an Araucana..I understand that having two tufts is a big deal, hard to get..and I had quite a few with them. Meaning, two tufts, plus the rumpless. :)

Oh Lisa

I'm so sorry. It's awful when the dogs go wild on them like that. The flock that my boyfriend had about a year ago was slaughtered by the neighbor's beagle. He felt terrible when he came home from work and saw them all.

Sphinx - Please, by all means, do sell those extra five Polish's if you'd like! I don't think I'm in a position right now to take some, dangit. I was before, but not now..........hate how things change.

jwoo - You will love the BR's if you happen to get one. I have a pullet and she is very mellow and sweet. Not exactly a snuggly girl because of the home she came from, but she doesn't startle easily. I stuck my hand in the laying box one day to get eggs and didn't realize she was in there. She didn't spook at all, just kind of stared at me politely and let me pet her.

Cynthia---thanks for the offer! You are so sweet. If I come your way again, will let you know. Of course I would buy chicks from you if I got any more though. I saw the Araucana pics, they are really cute. I do not even care about tufts or not. Its the blue egg, you know me, one track mind...still waiting to see what I have her as far as boys or girls to know how much room I have for the remaining chicks for this year. Love the silkies, but between those and Polish we decided to get a Polish because the egg production is better. Going to try to get one from Sphinx if she decides to hatch some. If we come your way again, I would be interested in an Araucana, tuftless even,.....and maybe another b/b/s ameraucana from those pretty blue eggs.....what dates are your next set of araucanas due to hatch, and the b/b/s?

Anybody on here want a 4 week old EE chick, might be a roo, might be a hen, cannot tell---Brown with white feathers? I am thinking a boy, but really I have no idea. Reallly really cute. I will post pics.

Still sad about my Japanese. It is going to take a bit. Her little ivory shiny eggs are sitting on my shelf in the fridge---I cannot even bear to look at them, I feel so bad I will never see those little things again :( I never thought I could be this mad at my dog!

That is awful about the beagle! I would be such a mess if I lost the whole flock! Thanks for the e-hug :)

Lisa, maybe you should blow out her last eggs and keep them. Maybe even make them into some kind of decoration that could be a memorial to her?

I will cheerfully give you 1-2 polish. It'll be the push I need to get the hatching eggs ordered.

Cynthia, I actually have 5-6 teachers interested in hatching eggs in class (that's what happens when you have four kids in four schools, and you maintain friendly relationship with former teachers). The first batch will be for an entire batch of preschoolers- probably 60-70 kids altogether. The next batch will hatch in MY dd's classroom, but it's the entire first grade that will be doing the project. The new overhead projectors will make it so the kids can watch on the big screen instead of trying to crowd around the tiny incubator.

I want to pick up two EE, but I really want them to be pullets. I tried to buy some last night. I found an ad on KSL, and they were the same age as my BLRW, so I thought that was PERFECT. Unfortunately, I got there and found out that the ones that were the right age were promised to somebody else, and they wanted me to buy day olds. I'm so, so, so sick of chicks in the house that I declined. I'll probably buy them after my first school batch of chicks hatches and them put them in with the rest.

Cynthia and Lisa, what are you thinking about your lavs and gender? I'm starting to think both of mine are girls. Some of my BLRW are getting bigger, redder combs, and both of my lavs are still pale. No wattles at all on either.

Thanks Pearl!

Sphinx, I will pay you cheerfully for the polish! lol! Any idea what colors she breeds---are they varied or a certain kind? That will make my son so happy. He has waited forever.

My lavs are two very different temperaments. It is still the same...the small looks like a girl. Petite, sweet, no comb at all. The big one has long long legs, big feet, big comb, but not red. But most of all, this one acts like a rooster---he protects the other one like crazy, bullies her around, when she goes to eat he puches her away, eats first, then lets her eat---this is why I am convinced it is a boy---my little brown EE that I think might be a boy displays the same exact behaviour. It puffs his chest out and bullies the other ones around, herds them to the corner---I have never been around baby chickens before to see their behaviour, but wow these two sure seem like that is the way boys would act. IF they are girls, I do not know if they would be keepers for me, they have soooo much attitude lol. I will put pics up later today after we work on our coop, have to finish as much as we can today.
