I do not know if it is that big of deal----I just give them chick starter, til it runs out then switch if it is close to 8 weeks.....or if I have lots of starter I finish giving them that longer until it runs out. I had never thought of giving them grower in between, I wonder if that has any thing to do with why mine are mean to each other ? My BR seems smaller than most I have seen too. I will be interested to the response to this question too, good one

Hopefully someone better comes along to answer I used to do the last one you listed. Now do to being cheap I use starter till i get them out in the coop then it is just the layer. I am feeding the older girls.

If I recall correctly I just used flockrasier crumbles until about 4-5 months, then switch to Layena. However one year I had ordered a few game birds and I think I had better success with the chick starter for them. It could be coincedence but that year I didn't I lost quite a few of the little games. Lookin good one day, gone the next. They need higher protein. I only got quail antwerps and bb's, dunno if that matters. I did lose a little blue, no clue what, that I liked and was bummed.

But Layena's cheaper than flock raiser so if you can convert them earlier I would. Maybe just give them extra protein in some form.

I also recommend to always feed pellets once out of flockraiser. So much less waste and they learn to love them. I got some adult birds that got IFA's crumble feeds and it was a bugger teaching them to eat the pellets.

Bird-Man, I tried to look at your tat pictures, but I seem to be on "creepy stalker" status on your fb page. The only thing I can see on your fb page is that you added me and a couple other people as friends. I can't see any of your pictures other than one or two profile pictures. It sounds really cool though.


I will be really disappointed if you don't name that chick "Mr. T"!!!!!

Chicken food: I bought a 50 lb bag of chick starter. I will feed it to the chicks until it's all gone, and then I will go to the flock grower. I've heard the laying feed is not healthy to birds that aren't laying- too high of a calcium content. I usually buy a 20% feed, and then either mix in calcium, or have calcium free choice when I have older birds.

Each chicken has been vaccinated for Coccidiosis and Mareks. The flock includes some award winning chickens, some very ornamental hens and roosters and then the prolific laying hens.
