Utah!

I heve never had a rooster, but the behaviour is what made me think it was a boy---it was just really different.---it seems to protect the other one---when I put my hand in it runs to the front of the other one and tries to block me from picking her up. She, ( the little one) is very quiet and docile, loves to be picked up, the bigger one can be a bit mean.... also big one hogs food and when it eats he makes a giant mess...when around the other chicks, it steps in the round bowl, eats from the far side, and when the others come near it pecks at them trying to scare them off. If i put a round dish in there it gets inside and acts like it is challenging anyone from coming near. So I was sure it was a boy----but they are looking more and more similar, so I wondered if the big one is just more aggressive and because of the size I assumed it was a boy---but was wrong? I keep looking for those stringy feathers, but they are all very rounded still....but the comb does have more texture---the main row in the middle, but on the outsides there are teeny bumps that look like possible rows. Thanks for your input, I do not want to re-home it until I am sure---reason I am being so impatient is I am headed to Idaho in a week, where the person is that wanted it if its a boy. IF it turned out to be a girl, and laid a beautiful blue egg I would be so ticked off haha! I hate to make two trips, but that big one seems to be trying to convince me this last week that is worth waiting to see what happens.

honestly knowing that it is doing that along with my other feelings i think its a boy. i have never had a roo so i am just going by what i have learned. i may not be right but i am thinking boy.

Hi everyone!

I don't mean to change the subject on this post, but I'm in Plain City, Utah and just wanted to say hello and meet all the utahns in here! I currently have 3 black australorps, 1 red speckled Sussex all about 1 year. And about 15 chicks about 3 weeks old. The new ones are a mix of Polish, barred rock, buff orpington, Rhode island red, white Leghorn, and red speckled Sussex. We are in the process of building a new coop and run for them all and I can't wait to see them all together out there! It's Nice to see so many people from Utah on here! It makes me feel a little less lonely!:)

Yes, I would say that one bigger lav looks like a roo. Quite a bit larger comb than mine has, also, mine has no red in it, and, the hardly any wattles. Yours look larger than mine too. I wonder if it's just the picture.

Man Lisa, those EE's are going to be gorgeous! That's one reason why I like EE's, you never know, unless it's a black, just what colors you will get. Yours are very pretty! I put the latest ones up on ksl and they sold within the hr.! I decided to keep another EE that has some blue showing in the wing feathers..along with a buff color. Will be fun to see how she turns out. She has puffy cheeks too, but none can compare to the fluffy that those others have going on. Do those EE's still have a lot of fluff? Can't really tell by the pictures. Ozzy is a girl!

Good for you. You are going to have the prettiest flock in town! I would love to see pictures of your black EE's!

I have been thinking mine is a girl, but now, her tail is doing something I'm not sure I've seen before. It has, well..let's see how do I describe this..a real pretty dripping of feathering thing going on, but, it is going from the bottom of the tail. Not much of a puffy face, but I can tell it's going to be a pretty black hen..? lol..still thinking it's a girl, just a different, but pretty tail. If it isn't snowing tomorrow, maybe I can get a picture.

Brad, I now have the Pencils in with the big girls. They fit right in. They are still afraid of the big girls, but will go around them more and more to eat with them, and, I have been putting them up on the roost at night, they stay there all night..no light, no heat. Well, I have a light which is run by a timer, to come on early in the morning, but it isn't putting off heat..I just want the light. They come out bright and early with the others. The Orpington is now in the teenager coop/run. She loves running around in there. I had them without the light the last few days, but it has gotten so dark with this weather, and I can't put the tarp down from the front of the coop because it will get wet in there..so, I put the light back on until all of this stops, then it will go off again. She just snuggles up with the others..and two of them are older, but they do fine. One being the lavender I kept, that Lisa and Wendy have. So, one day, we will have to meet, and get your pretty girls over to you. This next week will be cooler in the beginning, but it looks like we are going back up into the 60's again.
I joined the Easter Hatch Along!

My eggs that I am hatching along with, are the Araucanas and Wheaten Ameraucanas. I am a few days earlier than most, but I decided I would go ahead and join. I entered my Christmas picture for the calendar contest..the one from last year.

randish! Sounds like you have some pretty nice birds going on. Don't you just love em? We love our babies here. If you could post pictures of your Speckled Sussex, I would love it..I have one in my teen pen that I am having fun watch grow out it's pretty feathers. My hubby loves that one.

Thanks Cynthia :) I appreciate all the comments on my pretty girls (and boys haha)! I joined the hatch a long too, set eggs at noon Saturday, the blue wyandotte eggs from Phoenix' birds.....will see what happens.

Did you keep that teeny tiny black from that small hatch of 3 bbs? thats the sibling to my splash....just wondering how the size is going, mine is so cute and petite :)

They all go out to the big coop on Wed. I tried the lavs first, but the big boy would not run from the girls, thinks he is all bad...so back in the garage fro another week....but they have to go, they are getting too big and smelly in the garage....they have lots of hideouts in the coop/run, so if they really want to be safe they can....if he has no sense then I guess he is on his own lol.

Welcome randishinney!

awwwwww i am so excited for my girls

maybe we can set a date of when i can come get them? my coop stays nice and warm even when its cold out, it stays around 70f and i do not heat. how old are they now? the two extra leghorns i had are loving their new home at my friends house, they have a nice big ranch to run around on and she has some very nice roosters so the girl that went broody last year may just get to be a mom.

Welcome, Randishinney!

I don't know on the lavs. It's so hard to tell on them. I noticed that none of them have any wattles forming at all. My BLRW are all only 4-5 weeks old, and the boys have very definite wattles. But, amongst the 5 (?) lavs, there's gotta be a boy in the mix, yet none have wattles. I'll go take some pictures of my lavs in a minute.

Corvidae, your price on your BLRW seems good. I bet you've gotten calls already, am I right? I would suggest that you include a picture or two of your grown hens so that people see how stunning the chicks will grow up to look like.

Whittni, noticed your flock is already sold. Congratulations! They got a great deal.

Would love to see pics Sphinx! I did not even know these would get wattles if they were male. See how much I know about roosters lol :D

It would be crazy odds that all 5 lavs between the three of us are girls.....I have gotten 6 straight run total from Cynthia--2 Lavs,2 EE, BA, splash----, some of them have to be boys.....I have 2 that look maybe-ish but aren't there usually more boys in a hatch than girls? I guess I have to factor in that she has picked out the girliest looking for us......Cynthia you did pretty good I think! I would have thought 1/2 at least would be boys. If one of my lavs is a boy, and one EE, I will be thrilled because I got one female of each group. :celebrate
