Oh, I didn't realize he was turning 12. My son just turned 12 on 2/28. They're very close in age. We should get them together sometime.

Yup 12! Remember when we came to visit? That same boy--- He is VERY little for his age. Poor kid got my mom's genes she is 4' 11". He is, I think, the shortest one I have seen in middle school. He has a good attitude about it, but I feel bad for him sometimes, his buddies all tower over him I know it bugs him. He weighs 60 lbs. And eats like a horse. But my older son is over 6 feet and he was short for a long time. Not quite this short, but shorter than most kids in his class, then when he got his growth spurt WOW it was fast although later than he wanted. So I am hoping sometime here soon my little one will be a little taller ! He has not grown hardly at all the last two years, it has got to happen sometime soon! But what he lacks in height he makes up for in generosity and thoughtfulness. Good boy that one :) Much easier than some of my older ones. It would be fun to get them (and us!) together :D

wow your son is small... i would love to be short or a normal height but i am stuck at 6'10. your son sounds like a great kid. i hope he is able to grow some. i am sure it would suck being short too. i hope he remembers if it was not for short people there would be no tall people :)

Trust me Brad, if you're going to not be average on height, it's better to be tall than short if you're a man.

Lisa, my son hit his growth spurt early, but I'm worried that he's going to take after short me and not get to be very big. He's 5'1, and I'm hoping he can get to be at least 5'7 or so. I'd be giddy if he made it to 6'.

ha ha, Brad, great way to look at it. My 18 yr. old was so short for so long. We weren't quite sure he was going to be any taller than another brother of his, who is only 5'8..they say that is actually average. Our 18 yr. old is now coming up to 5'9. I remember when he caught up to me, 5'3..lol..he was so excited. He has passed me up a long time ago. There is something about that Sophomore year. :)
Brad, don't wish you were shorter. You wouldn't look like Brad if you were shorter! You look great at your height!

Oh, and then there's the look in that little face of theirs as they get older. Even now..a Senior, he has people thinking he is a Sophomore. He doesn't mind. I tell him that's a good thing, to have a face that looks young now, may mean having a face that looks young at 40 and over.

Short people have power! They don't have to duck going through doorways and they fit in a Geo Metro, no sweat. That being said, tall people also have power! Most all of my buddies in high school towered over me, so whenever there was an assembly or that, I'd just find one of them and ask if they saw this person or that person yet. My family is fairly tall, but I got the shortie genes, so I'm average, I guess. 5' 6" ish. I like to refer to it as "compact-size". Like travel-size

birdman, Cynthia's right. Your height fits you very well. Don't wish for being shorter!

Lisa, don't worry, your son sounds like a good kid. He'll do alright. And I bet he sprouts in the next year or two, as well. That happened to my brother. He got to junior high, and we had to buy TWO new pairs of sneakers for him inside a year because he was growing so fast, his older shoes were literally crushing his feet. He didn't even have time to wear them out.

Cynthia - I have the same thing as your son. I look younger than I really am. I've had people tell me that I will really appreciate it when I'm in my 40's, but I tell you what, I'm having fun with it already. I went into my brother's high school last year and got mistaken for a student - twice! (I'm 26) I laughed so much. I could really cause some havoc, if I were more mischievous

Chick update: No one has died in about 36 hours so far, which is good, and frustrating. Good, because I don't want the little ones to keep dying like that, but frustrating, because it makes it harder to figure out what was wrong with them! They can't do a necropsy on a live chick. If they are all still alive by Monday morning, I'm going to call that vet and find out how old they have to be to test their blood for things like pullorum. Seems like more of the BLRW's would have died if it was pullorum, but what the heck do I know? Maybe she can set my mind to rest on it. Right now, I am scared to put them with any of the other chicks for fear of contamination.

Hang in there. I think it's a good idea not to mix those chicks with any others until you know what's going on, like you said. Time will tell what happens, I guess. And yes, I'd definitely ask the vet how old the chicks should be before blood tests can be done. This whole thing has just been a nightmare for you.

there are some pros and cons about being tall, such as hitting your head on everything, not fitting into most cars, having big feet and then having to spend a ton on shoes if you can even find them, having to get stuff up high for tons of people, the endless do you play basketball questions etc. sure tthere are good things but also a lot of bad things :) i am happy the way i am but yeah i would not mind if i was shorter. :)

Well, as a shorter person, let me tell you that those of us closer to the ground reeeeeally appreciate tall people. I've had to ask my brother to reach things for me before that are up high, and I try to tell him thank you every time he does.

Soooo, my boyfriend informs me today that my last two hens have gone missing. My Marans was not in the coop last night, and he hasn't seen her since yesterday morning. The BSL is nowhere to be found today, either. However, he's not too sure that the raccoon got them (I would be steamed if it had!) He thinks that they may have gone broody and are hiding eggs somewhere, which is very possible, since they were both laying before the last coon attack and they haven't been in the nest box since. AND I've caught that BSL hiding eggs before. Oh you guys, I really, really hope they're broody and not gone gone! I'm telling you, I'm cursed. I'm getting babies from Lisa today, and my two hens evaporate. I will be so relieved if they turn up again with some baby chicks in tow! Oh my heck, I'd be tickled. I've been dying to see what kind of mutt babies I could get out of my EE roo. And speaking of the boy, if he doesn't pick it up a little and protect the girls, he might just get demoted, and I'll give the red Wyandotte mutt I got from Sphinx the job! (Sphinx, he really is such a good boy. I love him)

But if the girls went broody...........I'm very worried about the coon picking them off while they're on a nest

If I find them and they're sitting on eggs, should I try to move them into their own coop?
