Utah!

<sigh> Forget the post earlier about how no more of the chicks had died. Found another BLRW dead this afternoon while cleaning all the brooders. The others had buried it in the bedding. Freezing it now to send to the vet lab Monday morning. She said it was best to have 2-3 of the bodies for testing. Every single one of the brooders has been deep cleaned again and the waterers completely replaced with new ones. Short of deep cleaning the carpet and wiping down the ceiling with clorox wipes (we already do that to the dust surfaces), I don't know what more I can do here. Let's hope the vet lab ends up with good news--i.e., NOT pullorum!

there are some pros and cons about being tall, such as hitting your head on everything, not fitting into most cars, having big feet and then having to spend a ton on shoes if you can even find them, having to get stuff up high for tons of people, the endless do you play basketball questions etc. sure tthere are good things but also a lot of bad things

i am happy the way i am but yeah i would not mind if i was shorter.

What size shoe do you wear Brad?

Well, as a shorter person, let me tell you that those of us closer to the ground reeeeeally appreciate tall people. I've had to ask my brother to reach things for me before that are up high, and I try to tell him thank you every time he does.

Soooo, my boyfriend informs me today that my last two hens have gone missing. My Marans was not in the coop last night, and he hasn't seen her since yesterday morning. The BSL is nowhere to be found today, either. However, he's not too sure that the raccoon got them (I would be steamed if it had!) He thinks that they may have gone broody and are hiding eggs somewhere, which is very possible, since they were both laying before the last coon attack and they haven't been in the nest box since. AND I've caught that BSL hiding eggs before. Oh you guys, I really, really hope they're broody and not gone gone! I'm telling you, I'm cursed. I'm getting babies from Lisa today, and my two hens evaporate. I will be so relieved if they turn up again with some baby chicks in tow! Oh my heck, I'd be tickled. I've been dying to see what kind of mutt babies I could get out of my EE roo. And speaking of the boy, if he doesn't pick it up a little and protect the girls, he might just get demoted, and I'll give the red Wyandotte mutt I got from Sphinx the job! (Sphinx, he really is such a good boy. I love him)

But if the girls went broody...........I'm very worried about the coon picking them off while they're on a nest

If I find them and they're sitting on eggs, should I try to move them into their own coop?
Well Red, I have some EE eggs that will be hatching next week. The eggs are that pretty olive color. The mom is blue and buff, the dad was either a pure BO, or a pure RIR. Those are the only two roos he had at the time. I also got some of his other brown eggs, just to see. They will make great egg layers, because most of his other hens are red sexlinks. He also has a SLW hen, and a Barred Rock. So, if one of those are in the mix, this will be fun to see. You will be seeing those on ksl eventually, unless you decide you want a mutt..or an EE. My BBS Ameraucanas are going to hatch this next week too, plus some the next week. The guy that wants oodles of them will buy a lot..but I will be putting pics up here so you can pick if you want. Won't be long now. :))

Awesome, thanks Cynthia! Let me mull it over for a day, k? I know I definitely want one of those BBS, if it works out alright.

Lisa, it was very fun to meet you and gab about chickens for a bit! I love love love these babies. You weren't kidding when you said they were quiet. I've got them in the brooder now with my BO, and they're doing fine. Still kind of stumbly bumbly, but they are babies. They were eating right alongside the BO the last time I checked on them. Thanks again!

Red, I have no idea about moving a broody. I've heard it can break their broodiness. If it was ME though, I'd worry more about their safety and I'd be moving them.

Donna, I feel bad that you lost another chick, but on the other hand, I'm glad that you can now do testing.

Brad, the shoe/clothes thing IS a good point. I can shop in the adult section or the kids' section for shoes. It's much easier to hem pants up than add a few inches.

if you find the broody girls i would build a pen around them. i hear moving them may break them of it. anyway i went to ifa today, saw quail chicks and as much as i wanted to i did not buy any. kids were going crazy over the chicks and one boy kept lifting the wire up over the feeder and droping it on a quails head... i feel so bad :( i asked him to stop but it did not help. i wish parents would watch their kids! anyway they had some double rabbit hutches on sale because they were used a little bit, well i ended up picking one up because the price was right and now my rabbit moved out of the coop and has a nice hutch and because its a double hutch i will be getting my mom a small cute rabbit, one that is a lot smaller than my flemish. also had to get another nest because two was not enough for the 10 girls that are laying lol.

Sooo Fun to meet you too Red! Another awesome chicken friend ! Glad the babies made it home ok, good grief the rain and then hailstones were something else! They were probably pretty cold out there! They are 6 days old, and they already have a new home. A good home! What to do about your hens? They just need to come home and quit taking off :)

We FROZE at the zoo---the ride home was crazy--pouring rain, flooding out the road we had to slow way down, then there was a windstorm over a few miles and there were things blowing across the road, a piece of fence up in the air swirling, a bundle of wire. lots of boxes and debris just flying everywhere. Sphinx, hope your place is ok it was not too far from your exit where it happened about 5:30-6 pm. Utah Spring weather....so much fun :/ My DH took off with his brother to the gun show so I drove the kids home. Wish it were him driving not me lol but we made it.

Hi guys! How's everyone's Saturday going? Sounds like Red and Lisa had a fun meet n greet. :)
my DH has been a busy guy today! Put up a fence for the baby Nigerian Dwarf goats we are getting in 3 weeks, and got started on the chicken coop!

Framing the floor

So the actually floor of the coop is about 4' off the ground. The single frame around the bottom is just for support. The ground where it's sitting currently isn't where it will permanently be, and it is a bit uneven, making the whole thing look lop-sided, but it will be great when it's finished. :) It's 8 feet square.
I'm so excited!
