Your chick is adorable! She has such big eyes. Cal Ranch is open on Sundays, you might try them for a bag of chick feed. I know they sell chicks there so I would think they would sell the supplys as well.

The quote isn't showing up even tho I hit "quote" so we'll see if it posts twice. Anyhows.... thank you for telling me about Cal Ranch. Never been there and it was FUN! They had several banties left but they were all a couple wks old and very flightly, looked like game birds of some kind. So I picked the smallest Gold Sexlink which they just got in. Poor girl had very bad pasty butt. Her and Dora are now buddies and I'm glad I went. Dora is much more active and imitated the eating & drinking. She may not have needed to earlier since she had just hatched but she did not have any yolk belly and the not drinking (except when I helped) had me concerned.

Dora's still such a peanut when you consider how small Sunny is. Now the two are happy, thank you for the suggestion!

Cynthia - sorry... I would hv loved a silkie but couldn't convince the DH to drive that far and Cal Ranch has gun stuff.

They're both so adorable. I'm glad you were able to get Dora a friend. My lone crele roo will have some buddies hatching this weekend. I'm going to separate the brooder so the new babies can "be" with Clay and keep him company until they are a little bigger and can go right in with him. Everybody needs a buddy, right?

Sounds like your hubby builds like mine does, gets a plan in his head, then goes to town. He has all the measuring tools to get things straight, and he can't use enough screws,,put in with a power tool..and then their the nail gun. And then there's the................he has it all! LOL... Looks like fun all right. I like the idea of the floor covering. And yours has glass windows!! Very nice.

Cynthia, they are "Low-E" glass windows! Will help keep it cooler inside during the summer.

I know all about power tools. I think I've bought about 75% of what we have-and I'm not afraid to use them!

My daddy didn't raise a wuss! LOL

I candled mine and one of each was not fertile. Some looked kind of weird, so we will see. But at the moment I have 10. I will check again in a few days.

No problem about the eggs, Cindy! I feel very blessed that they were given to me. Here's to hoping your 10 stay on the up 'n up!

Pics of a couple from the BLRW I hatched from Donna. Thanks Donna! These all had great coloring, no splash---I got 11/15 in lockdown....I think there are 4 black and 7 blue. Very cute and fat

It is really hard to tell these apart. Also, every single one had the rose comb this time.



Next weekend the Wheatens will hatch that I got from Chickenstock. Hopefully they will work, the eggs are pretty. So far I have 14 left from the original 16 that look good.

I love your new babies, Lisa! The BLRW in the last pic looks like a little chunk-kinda like my Clay.

I LIIIIIIIVE!! Gah! Took me a while to read through all the posts here and catch up on how everyone is. Last week, after I got done building that run, I was feeling tired and kind of sick. I figured it was just plain old exhaustion with a little bit of heat sickness mixed in. Turns out it was the onset of a super nasty flu virus that put me down for the rest of the week. So not fun, now I must unlearn that chickens = feeling sick, yuck. It's not the girls' fault that their mommy got sick.

Love all of the baby pictures! Doughie, that little goat looked like a cat to me at first, too, haha. Looks like you were having fun! Lisa, congrats on the new grandbaby! She is beautiful. And your daughter has your smile and your eyes. Cynthia, I so love the picture of your little silkie sleeping in the flowers. It's just so perfect and it keeps making me smile.

Sasha, am I dreaming, or did you say you live in Hyrum? If so, is that mansion barn that's down the road from you, in the direction of Paradise? If so, I might actually know who owns it.

Rex, hate to say it, but even if Lisa hadn't blown your cover, I'd have guessed your identity, too. Usually the only members on here that are discouraging of getting more chickens/goats/animals are the spouses

Oh, Lisa, guess what?! Stevie's tail feathers are curling down! YEAH!!! And I'm pretty sure I see the start of some wattle action going on, too. I'll try to get a picture soon.

Sphinx, I'm sorry to hear that you had such an unsettling experience with selling the cockerel

Don't worry about the boys I got from you. Even if they are inteded as dinner, they're still getting the best life I can give them. Plenty of food and water, fresh air and sunshine, free range time and lots of space. I don't like it when animals get mistreated, even if they're "just food". Any cockerel I get that ends up going to freezer camp will be treated humanely and given the care they need. After all, a happy chicken is better for eating than a scrawny, undernourished, stressed chicken, right?

In other news, my Icelandics are doing well. Sven is finally starting to grow. I wonder if him being plugged up delayed his growth at all? Either way, he's pretty zippy and happy now. Good times.

Yes, we live in Hyrum, and that barn is just outside of Paradise. The house it belongs to is just as impressive!
Speaking of impressive barns....that leads me to think of impressive horses, which leads me to think of the possibility of having a Triple Crown winner for the first time since 1978! How about "I'll Have Another" doing it? Think he can? I'm SO hopeful. It's a big deal for my mom and I. (For those who are in the dark, it's about horse racing.

Red, ugh, sorry about the flu, and sorry you've had no success with the traps. My neighbor and I both put out traps after our raccoon (?) attack, and we have yet to catch anything beyond a cat or two. I know that you're going to end up eating at least two, and possibly three of the roosters I gave you. However, I also know that you respect them as a life form, and will give them a good life prior to that, so I was pleased to have them go to you. I'm a little sensitive about it because there's a chicken facebook group I go on where this person talked about rehoming a couple of her roosters, and how she insisted on checking out the places they'd go to, to make sure they were going to a good home. That just doesn't seem feasible to me, especially when I've had to rehome 7 in the last couple months alone. I really AM ok with people eating my birds (which, evidently, she's not), as long as they're like Red about it. She just seemed so smug about the whole thing that it cut a little. For the record, I only shared the details of my exchange with you good folks, so she didn't know my backstory when she happened to post about it.

Sasha - Yep! I'll bet I know who it is that owns that mansion barn. The house is on a hill, right? I can't remember if it's white, too (the house, not the hill, lol) My best bud lives in Paradise, so we've driven by there a few times and awed at it. Small world. Next time I go up there to see her, maybe I'll have to check and see if I can stop in and say hi to you guys?

Sphinx, I can't blame people for not wanting their chickens to be eaten, but I'm glad you're okay with these cockerels being destined for the dinner table. I try to use them for more than just food, too - right now, they're part of the pest patrol crew, and when it's time for them to be dispatched, I'll be using most, if not all the feathers off of them. And don't worry, I can assure you that I'm a big advocate of quick methods of dispatch that have little or no suffering for the bird.

The cockerels' GLW heritage is really becomming more apparent. Two of them are clearly mutts, but the one that has the most black to him is really turning out nicely. My boyfriend likes that one best. They're big, too. I'm just waiting for them to crow. My EE roo better be careful, or he'll get jumped one of these times when he decides to harrass the teens.
