Utah!

hey all :D i love seeing familys on here! welcome to any members i have not welcomed. sunday our foundation decided to leak and flood a room causing damage to a lot of priceless family items so i have been working on getting the insurance out because i can not handle gutting another mold filled room. oh and i am dealing with getting bids for a new roof on our house, anyone have a roofing co they want to recommend? half the ones i have contacted did not seem like they want to be in business. then i have some other issues i have to deal with that if you are my friend on facebook you will know about it lol. someone here wanted advice on a breed that is good in cold and heat, i suggest a black sex link or a rock. hey red for that coon issue have you thought about a electric fence around your coop? that would keep a coon out. you can also do some motion sensor lights, they have them in solar power, i say put them up around your coop because my thinking is the light coming on will scare the coon off and get dogs barking etc. i also saw a ad on ksl a while back about a guy that will come trap your land for free, it was in the livestock equipment section i think, maybe place a add seeking a trapper?

Cynthia--thanks for the input! So funny your comment about the Delawares---that was my thought, if there was one I would keep it might be that one, Red sure liked hers...and they are pretty too. A white something to offset all the black I have out there would be nice :) I have a white rock out there and she is absolutely fluffy pure white sweetness. She is slowly becoming one of my very favorites. I think I have ruled out the SLW, I just hated mine, and if they are left at stores that is the last thing I want. Just have not had good luck with Wyandottes being great layers at all. Maybe those Aussies then.... Decisions, decisions. Good to know the Aussies sell well. Maybe I will get two kinds. With the gift cert it would be $20 plus shipping for two dozen, not too bad. I have Marans eggs in the bator too---can't see in them at all, hoping and praying for something this time. Last time out of 6 eggs I had one fully developed that I tried to help out on day 23 and it just did not make it. Huge chick from a huge egg, just did not work. These eggs are a little smaller, but from the same hens who lay big and dark , just winding down their cycle due to the heat so I am hoping the egg size might work to my advantage. I read somewhere about sanding vertical watermelon stripes on them to get them to evaporate a little better. I did not try it this time thought because the eggs were smaller and not as dark, and I was scared to try. AND I am still trying to figure out my temps. All my thermometers read alittle different. Getting closer, but I wish I could buy a for sure deal on a thermometer that was guaranteed accurate. My digitals (I have three) all read different, almost 4 degrees between them all. My aquarium thermometers seem to be closer--but out of 4 they vary 2 degrees, I put them all next to each other and one reads 100, the other 2 in the middle, the low one reads 98. I try to keep an average of those four so I am at 99.5 in my forced air. But I just do not think it is quite right yet. Grrr thermometers make me crazy.

Oh man that is awful to hear about your house! We get flooded under in the crawlspace with groundwater at times, I hate it. Glad your insurance will cover, ours won't touch it. Hope the clean up is not too bad, so sorry to hear this!

I have to admit if my driver's license had "U" on gender, I'd totally keep it because I'd think it was hysterically funny. And I'm giggling that you accidentally posted that on your wife's user name.

When I went to the school yesterday to add water, the power button was flashing, which means it lost power at some point. Could've been 10 seconds, could've been hours. Who knows. I have misplaced my good flashlight (odds are my 5 year old walked off with it), so I tried to candle with my crappy flashlight. It appears I've lost the ameraucana. So, I only have two confirmed live eggs at this point. Ugh.

Brad, sorry about the flooding and the other issues. I really hope insurance will work well with you. I don't know of a good roofing company- we did our roof ourselves. Ordered trusses, took off the gravel roof, etc. etc. It was a HUGE project, but I'm glad we got it done.

Oh man, sorry that you are having to go through this..water damage..no fun! Did that back in the 80's, during the big flood year. Had our whole basement flooded..we sanded, but when you live right next to Provo River, that doesn't help much. Plus, one year, a guy watered his field just over a couple of fields..and we had a bedroom flooded that we had just put new carpet in..had just finished that downstairs bedroom! So, I feel your pain! No fun!
Hey..facebook? PM me already!!

Hi Shinx.

LOL...haven't said that in a while.. hope you are doing well..no more school eggs hatching. Summer time..unless, you go to schools that are going in the summer?

I'm open to whatever. Egg layers was the main purpose of getting the chickens. But hubby said if i wanted to get one for fun i could. Something that layed blue or green would be fun too. Im in vernal. So i would have to go out of town for something special.

Well then you could get one from the great layer list (personally with all your red/golds I would get a Black Sex link, they are really sweet) and one from the fun list. Or two from the fun list---one colored layer (easter egger or ameraucana) and one fun ornamental (silkie, polish, frizzle). Now we need to find you some. Look on ksl for your area.....you might luck out and find a breeder or hatcher that has some in your area.....or the local classifieds if you have something different over there.....I have not seen many BYC folks from that area. You could check at IFA they can order stuff in sometimes. And def look around the 4th of July and Pioneer day....they had silkies here at that time. Also if you go this way anytime soon there is Cynthia in Spanish Fork.....(ha ha cynthia you know you will always have something fun hatching....)I have seen a few others right there by her on KSL too with some fun breeds (between Lehi and Spanish Fork is Chickenville I swear and that is closest to you) You can look up these breeds on the BYC main page--go to breeds- then you could decide what looks like the most fun :D :D Let us know what you decide! And post pics of course. Love to see those. Hope this helps, these are just my suggestions... Not trying to tell you what to do! Just give you ideas like you said. It is a fun decision getting your flock together, like shoe shopping! You really have to choose what is most interesting to you. Everybody likes different chickens for different reasons ;)

thanks for the help. I cant post pics till my hubby gets back from moab for the week ( he has the camera) and i get back from denver this weekend (5k color run). Are IFA is going to get some chicks in sometime the end off this month. I figured i would see what they have. If nothing i want then i figured i would try out in the valley next time im out. Vernal doesnt have to much. Im not sure if there is any breeders in the area. Thanks again. Sarah

I am starting to think that bantam frizzled cochins are a rare breed in Utah

I went to the Salt Lake IFA and apparently they don't know what a frizzle cochin is because the chicks they were sent were all bare-legged with absolutely flat feathers and the girl helping me still insisted they were frizzle cochins. She also launched into an explanation telling me that a bantam was a breed.

I called theDraper IFA and the lady said she had one but I would have to buy at least two chicks or they wouldn't sell it to me. They said that since they only had one frizzle I would have to pick another breed of chick too. After my experience with the Salt Lake IFA I didn't want to drive to Draper and find out it wasn't frizzled or have to buy another type of chick that I didn't want.

I called the Ogden IFA to make sure that they had some and she said that they had six. I drove down there to find that only one out of the six that had frizzled and he looked exceedingly roo-ish.

I am afraid that if I take too long to find her the chick will be too small to put in with my other chicks. They are silkies and are very mellow but I imagine that if they are big enough they might accidently smash it. I also want to get one young enough that it will like people. Does anyone have any other ideas of where to find a frizzle? I am REALLY getting frustrated.
