Utah!

I am curious.. how many of you have chickens and dogs?  I am new to the chicken thing, so i want to know how you keep your dogs from getting Giardia.

I had Giardia once---the health dept said it was from contaminated water source, something you get from streams or lakes, or it can get in your well......In my case it was from a camping trip we had been on. My sister got it in India. I have never heard of chickens having it, or dogs or animals spreading it. I will be interested to hear more on this if anybody knows anything?

Hi Jesusfreak806,
We have 3 dogs who have had the chickens sharing their yard for the past few weeks. Giardia isn't something the dogs will get from the chickens. Giardia is a bacteria found most commonly in standing water. Sometimes in river water, but more often than not, still water. Of course they can get it from a muddy yard that has previously been totally infested with giardia, but if you haven't had it before, you won't have it now.
There is a new vaccine you can have your vet give your dog to prevent giardia...a lot of us dog show people have started using it. :)

I am cracking up...I will be all day...where did you get this???! too funny!

Had a good laugh for today! Thanks guys for the funny videos. Too funny. Enjoy your family time this weekend.
Update on my chicks hatching. One WC blue has hatched and I have another pip.
I found it insanely funny myself, especially when the dude in the background was dancing. youtube is an amazing source for humor.

I have a Havanese and haven't had a problem with anything. I ask our vet if I needed to be concerned about things passing between chickens and dogs or the other way around. He said as long as she is up on her shots things should be fine. That is also with cleaning up after them and having fresh water and such for them. She is with my chickens a lot. My silkies crawl under her to get by her when she is in their way. Funniest thing. She also loves picking up the eggs she finds and brings them into the house through our doggie door. She thinks thats her job. She is very careful with them.

Rex, nice work on the coop! It looks sharp. I'm sure the ladies appreciate it.

Hey birdman, I found a suggestion on another thread for catching coons. They said to try putting a bowl of Pepsi in the back of a trap. That way, the raccoon has to stick around for a minute to get their fix. I'm very eager to try this
Thanks, I am glad you like the coop. There are a lot of little issues you can't see because the pic was taken from way back. I was rushed to get the chickens out of the house before tomorrow's family reunion and so i shortcutted a few times when I should have pulled it off and started over. But it works and that is really all that matters, no matter how it looks.

now that is a idea! i would even try some cheap wine, get the thing drunk lol. i am sure it would love the wine too, i have seen them get drunk off of fermented fruit before. but then again wasting alcohol is alcohol abuse but then again its for a good cause...

Hey there ya go! Think raccoons make mean drunks? I have been tempted several times to put out a tub of beer so that the snails can have their happy hour, but now I'm worried my girls would eat them and go funny from having marinated food..........I should get some wine that will have that thing laying on it's side and drooling. Can't crawl away if it can't even see straight, right?

Rex, yeah, I took a couple of little shortcuts when I was working on our run last week. It still needs some work. I thought I had the chicken wire on there tight, but when I went around and pulled on it the other day to check it, I found a spot where the staples came out easily. I think I'm going to take some screws and install a strip of sheet metal along the edges of the wire now. If I can pull the wire that easily, I'll bet a raccoon would try the same thing. Yuck.

Aunt Hattie, it does sound funny, but I'm still eager to try the Pepsi thing. Nothing else I've done so far has worked. This coon is just too smart. On a side note, every once in a while I'll get a craving for cherry Pepsi. I only ever want a taste of it, and then I'm fine. I don't know why.

Wow! I have a pip. I did not get these eggs home from Chickenstock until Sat night, May 5---set them the next morning, so this one is a day and a half early?? The pip is pretty red, I hope this little guy did not get ahead of himself! It is also on the small end
