Utah!

It's very cozy. I have a hilarious picture of my SLW laying her very first egg. She'd just finished, and was in there, still being confused, when another chicken climbed in underneath her to lay, she just couldn't wait any longer.

Happy Anniversary to Sasha and TRex! That sounds like a really great anniversary date. I want to see MIB3. Was it good?

Janel, I think it is because of the straight run thing. If my hatch goes very poorly this week, and I only get one chick, I may call you.

Sheesh been outside all day. Always miss so much if you are gone a minute on here. Cynthia YES you can of course have a chick. I will do my best. Hattie can you keep it (them) and take good care of it (them) and drop it (them) to Cynthia on your way back through? Sorry for all the chicken shuttling. You are awesome! Ok so now I have only a couple left, that will keep me from falling in love and keeping way to many haha! Cynthia I will paint the toes on yours. I will do a fancy chant and wave some magic dust around and pray to the Great Chicken that Donna knows and deem it (them) to be a girl. These are so hard to tell apart, the noses all look the same. They do not seem to feather sex.....they are super new so I do not have a lot to go on with wings and tails. But I will do the chant. And send two because I owe you a few chicks for sure :) Then I can finally pay you back partially for the blacks and blue ameraucanas because you are a stubborn girl and won't give me your address to mail you a check lol. Then you can choose who you want and sell the other to Kirk in a few weeks when you are sure you have a girl :p That is what he gets for being late all the time lol You can rooster him good.

Blujems you are always welcome to come hang out while your awesome DH fixes the faucet. Would love the company! Did you guys know phoenix is the awesome plumber? Sasha he is the one to call for your remodeling, for sure. I will be at home during the week during the days til 5, and gone tomorrow night between 5 and 6:45 is to meet Hattie. Then home after that tomorrow night. ....the rest of the week during the evening I have no definite plans so I can be home if you just let me know when :) But my puffballs will be down to 4 after I meet Hattie. But then I will have her 3 polish in there, so I will lose 6 puffballs plus two BLRW and gain 3 polish. Either way it will be fun to see the babies. You too Sasha, come visit to see babies :) One more good thing about the babies, they attract chicken friends for a visit :)

Oh and last of all HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Teerex and Sasha. We are close, ours was 6 days ago, 19 yrs. ! But we did not have nearly as much fun as you guys :p:p

Just wanting to spread the word to other Utah people to help get in signatures & comments before the deadlines on the issue below:

In poultry slaughterhouses, the USDA is considering allowing production lines to be sped up and decreasing the number of assigned USDA inspectors and their amount of "on-line" monitoring. The USDA is offering slaughter companies permission to largely just self-inspect most areas. This could have the potential to build problems in a number of areas, including food safety, bird welfare, and worker welfare.

The USDA is requesting public input on the issues, & I think us poultry-keepers should take part in the discussion!

Here is a thread I've starte about it:
MAY 29 deadline to tell USDA to keep monitoring poultry slaughterhouses--PLEASE SIGN ONLINE!

Oh come on Lisa... put some magic dust on those chickies so we get exactly what we want=) LOL!! I'm excited to get those cute little things!! And now you're getting Jersey Giant eggs?? Oh dear, feeling very tempted again.... We'll see what happens in the next 4 weeks I guess!

If you order Delawares I will not speak to you. Not for 10 minutes. Banished......Not speaking to you. No I am not. Red will be mad at you too. Just warning ya hahahaha! You will have no friends. None. do it! do it!! do it!!

since I just set a ton of eggs in the incubator I bought from IFA any input would be appreciated. It has the automatic turner. you mentioned they died before lock down. and if was the incubators fault. Please tell me what I need to watch for. I haven't candled ever so will be interesting if I can figure out any thing. BTW my name is Diana and I am from Taylorsville which is in the Middle of the Salt Lake Valley

Diana, Sorry about your hand - hope it heals well. I first bought a Farm Innovator incubator (almost identical to Little Giant) from CAL Ranch. I thought it was doing well, but the thermometer in it was WAY off. When I put another therm in with it and it read 99, the therm in the unit read 92. I'm sure it cooked my first batch of eggs - none hatched. I bought a second incubator, Genesis 1588, and hatched 27 of 30 eggs. I used the FI one as a brooder, which worked well. I haven't found a thermometer that I would recommend - mine all read 2-3 degrees different. Since I had a good hatch with the Genesis I'm trusting that its therm is doing the job. If you have too many eggs, you can stack them between the rows in the turner, just make sure to tilt them a few times during the day. Then when you candle and toss some, you will probably have more room. I had Blue Ameraucana eggs shipped from SC get lost in the mail for 4 extra days. I was sure none would hatch but 2 did. Have faith. On the advice of a local Marans breeder I tried for 45 humidity, letting it get down to 20 before adding water (about 3 days) and as I high as I could get it for lockdown - 75+. It worked the one time, trying to duplicate success with a hatch date of Saturday. We'll see. Good luck to you!
