Utah!

Yay Cynthia, hope it is a blue so you have two! And I like the box a lot, that is such a sweet way to memorialize Toby. Alder is (at least in cabinets) a little lighter with dark knots usually, very pretty.
I just had a surprise as well....another Marans (from pawtraitart) started laying. This one is not speckled, is is more solid brown. I like it! My other one's speckled eggs have gotten darker as she started laying more, so for a first egg I think this one might be an even darker layer than the other one. I have one more to go, she is about 2 weeks behind this one, she is the baby I hatched myself.

Well, I got a surprise. Another new egg today, but it wasn't blue. I wondered if my red sexlink would start laying today, and she did! Plus, another egg from my Silkie, starting to think, no surprise. She is laying like mad..wish I had a male for her.

Here are the pictures for today. My wheaten either changed her mind, or she laid somewhere else, will have to go look for an egg just in case, but she's been in the nest box too many times. Maybe tomorrow! :)

Miss Piggy's white egg, and the green egg from the white EE mix. Not the blue blue
we were hoping for. Maybe someone else will get the blue. It's a pretty color though.
And, a nice size for a pullet. My red sex link's egg is smaller, below.

Smaller, but I love the color. A very deep red brown. It has some red spots on it too.
Those may fade later. This egg is one of those really smooth ones. Going to be a nice
size someday too. She is pretty small, but started around the time she should for a sexlink.
Finally, I am getting eggs! I was just getting Cotton's, the NH's..Maggy...and Miss Piggy's
Now I will get these two extra, and I really do expect that Wheaten to start any time.
Can't wait to see the color!

Cynthia, I think that blueish green egg is very beautiful. Congratulations on all the new eggs. The color of wood depends on the stain they use. Alder usually is a bit lighter. The grain is finer than oak and pine, but not as fine as maple. I think it's closer to maple as far as texture goes. The box will be really pretty.

Lisa, love your new egg!

man i love my black sex links. 3 of the 4 of them that i have are laying 4oz eggs daily, they are huge! i think if i could only have one breed it would be black sex links. the other black sex link lays 2 to 2 1/2oz eggs or so.

I also like the sex links, my preference is the red, but I just may have to try a black the next time I get one. Are they sweet? I generally don't have a problem with the red's so I would imagine that the blacks are pretty much the same in temperament?

Sphinx, that color you explained sounds really pretty. I am glad, it sounds like it will be different than the one I have for Grizz. :)

Watching the nest box's tomorrow! That Wheaten is teasing me. lol...I have Physical therapy in the morning. but will come home and be checking. Plus, I get a short e-mail from our Son in GA. He doesn't like typing us letters, he prefers hand writing! And he's been doing great getting one off once a week, But since he can use the computer, he writes a short one, and I send a short one with a couple of pictures to him on Sundays. All good tomorrow, except, for the PT, and, a little bit of worry about that coopers hawk. I just saw it out there. I stood around, walked around, until it left. It always leaves if we stay in the yard a bit. Off to another neighbors with chickens, and there are a few.

most mine are super sweet but there are some not so friendly birds in every breed. one is named ms b for a reason but she will still sit with me. the others are super sweet. one demands a "kiss" every night, she rubs her comb against my nose and talks softly to me. my black sex links like to talk with me, love to cuddle and are so funny. i love their color with that green sheen over their black feathers. one even has the feathers on her neck like a spr or a welsummer but they are golden with the black center.

Congrats everyone on the new eggs! This is so exciting. I hope some more of my girls get with the program soon. My Leghorn isn't laying yet, but she's squatting more for me. And, we actually got three eggs today! One from the BO, one from the BSL, and one that I think is from the RIR, but I'm not sure. That BSL was on the nest first thing this morning. I fed everyone, then went and looked at the nest and saw black. I thought, "Whose cat is in our nest??"

Whittni - I'm with Pawtrait. I would like to know how I can get a chicken Santa hat

My mom came up with a new way to keep our escape artist turkey in the back yard. She made a little fabric cuff with a button on it, which we tied to the lead and then buttoned on the turkey's leg. It works pretty well! The turkey did get tangled in the bushes later, though, so I let her off for a bit before I took a nap. When I woke up, it was dark out and the turkey was hanging out outside of my little bedroom window making her usual cheerful pips. Everyone else had gone to bed, but apparently she didn't feel like going to sleep yet
