I set eggs yesterday...(from blujems). FBCM, EE (cuckoo marans x wheaten am), wheaten am, and some AM mix.) Due 1/9....gotta give my three musketeers a few more buddies

I just went out to water, good sakes it is Freeeeeezing out there! 12? Really?? Not used to this yet, it feels like minus 12.

I just got some barn yard mixes from a friend, and he gave me a Nankin egg too. That little Nankin egg will probably hatch first, if it makes it to hatch. It is already more developed than those big eggs.
I have some Pure RIR's in too. I really want one or two RIR's for this May. I pretty much have a couple of hens that will be starting to lay in Jan. maybe Feb...March, April..and now, May. ) I have a few pullets out there. By March, I will know which of the others that have been laying will go, one isn't very friendly at all..or nice to the others. I think my young leghorn and Australorp will be laying by Feb. or March. My Welsummer in March. hmmm, thinking my Swedish Flower in April. These are guesses, as you well know, they can take their time, or go early. We shall see, but I didn't have any for May for sure..now I do.

That's if I get some girls!

Sounds fun! Nankin? Will have to look that one up. Sounds familiar but not registering....My ole' brain, goes 'creak creak'...hope that one hatches so we can see what it is! I am most excited about the mixed eggs I have, because I really do not know what they will look like. She has a brown/orange Amer/EE with a blue wheaten roo...will be fun to see what those EE chicks look like. The mom has pretty cheeks. She has more of those same eggs set to hatch NY so we will get to see soon. The other ones I am excited about is the cuckoo marans mom, with the blue wh Amer. Roo...they would be EE and should have the puffy cheeks. Fun to see what their coloring will be. I brought the mama back with me so I might get a few more fertile eggs from her over the next week to save for hatching too Ewww I got the hatching bug bad right now!

Ewww I got the hatching bug bad right now!

Lisa, these 7 that I have now...well, the six mixed ones, had been without their RIR boy for 10 days. He had been killed by a couple of dogs. I told my friend that the hens can stay fertile for up to two weeks, and that I would give it a try. He does have what looks to be a black Australorp boy, that is just starting to show interest, but he didn't think he was really doing anything "real" yet. The Nankin egg, he has two little roos out there, so no surprise that the egg is fertile. Anyway..all 6 of the very large eggs are fertile. As I write this, I am remembering that I need to let him know. He had the RIR, and most of hens are red sex links, one is a real pretty little EE that he got from me a couple of years ago. No green eggs from her though in a long time. So these will be sex links..if..I get any black then I will let him know, that the black roo is doing his job. The black was supposed to be a pullet Barred Rock from one of the stores. Not only was he a he..he wasn't a barred rock! He's beautiful..he really does look like an Australorp. So, will make great babies for future great laying hens. Some kid probably picked up one baby from a bin, and he went into the bin that my friend just grabbed some pullets from. He does have one Barred Rock hen out there after the dog attack..hmmm, I just may get a barred looking baby. We'll see..candled last night, they are all swimming.

Man, it's very, very, very, windy here! All yesterday, and last night, I was so hoping to wake up to the wind gone! I'll be glad when it settles down. It makes the cold worse.

Looking forward to a letter from our son today. We usually get one on Thursdays, didn't really expect it, because of the heavy mail load right now, but hopefully today..maybe not..maybe tomorrow. Crossing fingers.

Christmas family party tomorrow..hope the snow holds off until Sunday like they've been saying!

Hope your babies are still doing well Lisa, and getting those little feathers already! They grow pretty quick right?

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. Holy moly there is a lot going on! I love to see all the hatching happening. I have bantam Polish and bantam lavender Ameraucana's in my incubators right now. It's so fun hearing the hummm of the incubators.
