Utah!

so a few days ago in the paper there was a story about this family that was given a hen that did not lay much anymore to eat, well the lady just could not eat her so they kept her in their basement. well one day the family woke up because the hen was freaking out being as loud as she could, turns out the house was on fire. so they saved this hen and the hen saved them. cool story huh? edit found the story http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/28/pet-chicken-fire_n_2376501.html
That was a good positive story to read--Thanks for sharing!

Probiotics via buttermilk or unflavored yogurt or a probiotic supplement, as well as black oil sunflower seeds (which you can get in small quantities in the bulk food section at Winco Foods) are my best suggestions for cold weather foods, in addition to high-protein food in general.
I'm also running a regular lightbulb at night in the fairly closely enclosed area near where my chickens sleep, as well as leaving the nest open for them to sleep in it when they want to.
Best wishes to all with this cold!

So sorry about all the cold weather guys.
Cynthia so sorry about your NN too. I feel so bad for all the animals having to deal with the extreme temperatures this time of year.
Sphinx so glad you found your little frizzle. We have to go put my little polish in the coop almost every night. It's like having to put a child to bed each night only she doesn't get story time.

So here I go again worrying about my little eggs hatching. This is the very hour they are at 21 days and no pips.

The little blue eggs are so tiny I don't know if any will hatch. Fingers and toes are crossed.

Hi Speckled! Long time no hear..or see. :) I have been giving my girls extra protein for sure. Plus, this morning, I put some Acidophiles on the eggs, because they are getting some Denagard. Getting some yogurt tomorrow. They love it.
Do you still have your blog? Are your chickens doing well now?
You can get probiotic supplements for cheap at Winco? I'm so going. This weather is horrible. It is supposed to get better by next Thurs. Let's hope!!

http://www.qcsupply.com/denagard-liquid-concentrate-novartis.html Here it is Shpinx.

Seems expensive, but it isn't. I've had mine for close to 2 years now, because I have a small flock. Plus I sold some to Speckled once. I still have plenty to get me to spring, then I think I will need to buy more. I do use it in the spring, and fall as a preventive. If I had known this cold weather was going to be this bad on them, I would have given them another treatment before the real cold hit. Wish I had!

hattie, I have some RIR's that should hactch on Tues. I'm with ya. Crossing fingers. I really want a couple of these girls.

I am doing much better, The red line that was going up my arm is receding. The swelling is better and my fever is leaving. I have a funny story. I needed to get a shot today in the hip. My friend came over to give it to me. Its a very painful shot so its reconstitued with lidocaine to control the pain of the shot. There were several men here. Out house cleaner, Eds 2 friends and Ed. We went into the bathroom so Alana could give me the shot. It did hurt but not too bad, When she was giving the shot I could hear the guys in the living room laughing an talking. I started screaming bloody murder saying it hurts it hurts your killing me. Total silence. My friend and I are in the bathroom laughing like crazy and I hear Ed say, That must have really hurt I've never heard her scream like that, they were feeling really bad for me until I came out laughing. Some more good news, I took my chickens cast off and she is walking. A bit unsteady but walking good. I am so glad, I lost a silkie last night. This cold is brutal. I gave my two Americana Roosters to some people who were hungary. I hope they have a nice meal.
Lisa I think Saturday will be ok. I'll talk to you later in the week

Hattie, did you candle your eggs when they went into lockdown? I hope you have a great hatch.

SpeckledHills, it's nice to see you!

Sundancen, how did you lose a silkie? Was it one of the babies? You are so funny to yell like that.

My frizzle was outside again tonight. This time, instead of carrying her over to the man door and putting her in, I put her in the hen house through the chicken door. Hopefully she gets the idea soon.

OH MY HECK! i forgot how funny it was the give treats to chicks. I gave them a piece of turkey. It went on for about 5 minutes of non stop running and stealing, even moma got in on the action, but the chicks are to fast for moma and run in between her legs. Moma had it once but the black one jumped up and stole it from her.

I might loose my RIR rooster if the temp dosen't come up. He got some frost bit on his comb last night. I hate this cold. Im sorry for all your looses For all of you who are loosing Silkies this winter i will have little replacements come spring.
