Utah!

Oh wow! It is huge! Maynard's was so small, I never ever thought it was a girl. It was just an itty bitty walnut. I am sure it would have gotten bigger over time.
What to do....I am going to wait a little longer I guess to be sure :/ Funny how different they are.

I've got some exciting news! I've been home from work all day because of being sick (no, that's not the exciting part) Been sleeping most of the day, and earlier this afternoon, I was half-awake and could hear one of the turkeys wandering around by my window. In my delirium, I also thought, "Is someone singing the egg song?"

Imagine my surprise when I went out to the garage a little later to feed everyone and found this in one of the cages!

Chuck Norris gave me a green egg! What an awesome surprise for when I've been feeling so down. It's sitting next to one of the small white eggs I had been finding a couple of weeks ago. It's the prettiest gray-green sea foam color. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. I was dreaming just the other night that I found an egg from her with a darker olive tone, haha.

And, here are a couple of photos from this morning when I let everyone roam during breakfast. We have to restrict where they can go in the garage - I don't want anyone to find and eat insulation or loose screws.

"Say, how'd'ya get outta this dump?"

Angel's no dummy. She knows right where to sit to soak up that lovely space heater warmth.

Cynthia thanks for the picture! I like the idea of a smaller tote, wasn't sure I could balance a seed tray over my small sink.
I am excited to pretend it is spring in the house. Too early to start seeds for the garden so this should satisfy the need to have a new project.
Well, that and the mealworms :) thanks for the suggestion Sphinx!

BTW I am going to another funeral in Idaho. This time in Boise. I plan to stop by to pick up chicks from Pawtraitart. Just in case anyone else needs something brought back ;)

Sundance, I noticed you are in Taylorsville. My son found a turkey that wandered into the little Bennion farm (4800 S right off Redwood road) where he is housing his Scottish Highlanders. Do you know of anyone near there that could be missing a turkey? He has been feeding it and put it in a pen in the "bunny barn". They are moving all of their animals out today to Wheeler Farm and some local pastures. He needs to figure out where it's going to live. He had hoped someone would come looking for it by now.

I skimmed through some of the ads on KSL; checked the Poultry listings, bird listings, and lost & found pet listings for the pat several days. I don't see anything on there about a missing turkey. I would say to list it on KSL, but I'm paranoid and I worry that someone would come claim it for a free dinner

One of my turkeys was a lost-and-found. She showed up in a relative's yard, then got carted to my house a few days later. I checked KSL to see if anyone had lost her. Never heard anything, neither did my relative. So, she lives here now. I don't want her to be eaten.

Thanks Red! I hadn't thought to look on KSL. I will remember that:)

Good news about my dog. Went to the orthopedic surgeon about his leg today, XRays show he is making bone and his leg is healing, He put him back in a cast for 4 more weeks, He said at the rate he is going he will either heal completely or have enough bone made to be able to plate his fracture, I was pretty excited. I didn't sleep last night I was so worried about what he would find. If his bone hadn't started healing better they were going to amputate his leg today, What a releaf

I havn't heard of a lost turkey. I would put a generic add on ksl. Make them describe the turkey. When are you going to idaho and where do you live?

Oooops I forgot that part.
I am in West Valley and we are leaving Friday morning and returning Sat evening.

I will place an ad on KSL, thanks for the suggestion.

Birdman, you are so smart to refuse to let Rocky Mtn Power put a cool keeper on your ac. My dad owns an HVAC company, and he says that it's so bad for your system- they cycle on and off, and the cool keeper just abruptly cuts power. No big deal once or twice, but if it's happening several times a day, it can ruin your AC.

Red, I don't know what to tell you- building a bigger run sounds so horribly unpleasant right now, but isolation in the garage would suck for her, and inside would also be messy.

Lisa, didn't you know that "separate but equal" became UN-PC a few decades ago? ROFL On your showgirl, I'm inclined to think you're right- #1 is a girl and the other two are boys.

Cyndiloowho, when I had lizards, I bought my mealworms on ebay. I'd get 500 or 1000 or around $15, which was a fraction of the price of buying them locally. If I were to start raising mealworms, I think I'd get my starter stock that way.

My bigger bulb died a couple nights ago, so I put a 40 watt bulb out there, hoping it'd be enough, but my frizzle's water was frozen the next morning (I have yet to see her drink from the nipples, so I keep a backup source out there for her). Last night I went to buy a new big bulb, and I think I narrowly averted a tragedy. Have you guys seen the article about teflon coated bulbs? I had a "shatter resistant" bulb in my hand, and dh was pressuring me to leave when something niggled at my brain and I remembered hearing talk about them being toxic. There was no warning at all on the bulb, so I could be being paranoid, but I'm pretty sure if I had bought that bulb, my chickens would be dead this morning (actually, they very well could be, it's still dark outside and I haven't checked them yet today). I ended up getting a different one that nothing about it being shatter resistant. Anyway, I thought I'd put the reminder out there, because I wouldn't have known any better if it wasn't for Backyard Chickens.
great info sphinx! yeah there is no way i would let them mess with our ac. ours is very efficient anyway. and plus with my heart it could be very dangerous because things like heat and humidity make me very sick, pass out and it could kill me. great info on the bulbs. having parrots i have been battling teflon for years, they put it in so many things now. its scary. glad you caught it in time. that would be horrible to have a flock die. i have been wanting to do mealworms for some time but just have not done it yet.

Hello everyone. I hope everyone's birds are doing well with the extreme cold temps. One question...I noticed that my buff Orpington, barred rock and golden comet have a slight case of frostbite. They were fine until the most recent low temps. The buff has a couple of black spots on the tips of her comb and the others are white on the tips. Is this normal with these unusually low temps?
