Red, I found an awesome rescue operation for you; it's too bad that it's in CO. I'll c&p what they said:

HEN RESCUERS NEEDED in Northern Colorado! The owner of Grant Family Farm in Wellington, CO KILLED TWELVE THOUSAND hens, turning them into compost, claiming he could not afford to feed them. There are 1,000 remaining hens requiring adoption this weekend.

The Hen Again adoption will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Grant Family Farm, 1020 West County Road 72, Wellington. To help or donate to the re-homing cause, contact Shonna Kempter or Redmond-Ott at [email protected].




In other news, my first chick has hatched, and it's black. Second chick is almost out, and it looks like it'll be black too.

Ceramic heaters, So the ceramic heaters used for reptiles can't be used for chickens?

I would assume ceramic heaters would be fine for reptiles OR chickens.

Black means they're mixed with the marans.

Which is kind of cool, because that means they'd be olive eggers, right? The legbar genes seem pretty strong- all of my other marans mixes look predominantly marans, but these guys look a little different.

Two have very big combs already. I'm wondering if they're cockerels?

So, as of now, I have 4 hatched, and 3 pipped.

There are to many chickens dying lately.

Sphinx CUTE babies!!! I love watching them. Good idea putting them on a towel I am going to do that with my next hatch. I'm so paranoid now about splay legs.

My little black silkie went broody so now I have two of them.

I didn't realize your hatch cam was up. I love that. Where are the eggs that are pipped? Can you look at the wings and see if they look like cockrels?

Aww Sundance, so sorry. This darn cold weather! Next week, I'm just waiting for next week!

Sphinx, your babies hatched! I also didn't realize you were close to hatching. Just went to your cam, they are darn cute when they are all wriggling around, then all of a sudden, stop, and then, the heads just slowly start going down, and they are out of it.

Richard is coming home with us tomorrow! He will be on pill form of what he's been on through IV. He needs to go see his PCP when he is in. I know that he is out on Mon..so Tues. The dr. at the hospital said he would call him. Anyway, we will keep him here until I see he is doing well enough to be on his own. He can take care of himself when it comes to showering, and dressing..that kind of thing..but, it will be between myself and DH taking food down to him, he will be downstairs. Even when he was well and here, the going up and down the stairs just to eat was not easy. The whole basement is finished. He has it all down there..big t.v. bathroom to himself. I'm thinking family will be coming over to see him. Now, if he will just continue to heal. The surgery he would need first is cleaning out the wounds he has in his back, and front. Also, they want him to consider a colostomy. He's going to think on that one! Pretty big decision. I personally think it would be good now.

My little olive eggs look so nice sitting in there. I am going to candle and see if I can see any bullseye. I know I won't be seeing too much in there before too long. But, will candle again on the 5th day. I find that a good day to candle in those dark eggs. They get dark fast.

Glad your son is doing better, Cynthia!!! Thanks for clarifying which son, sounds like he has a palace to himself in your basement, haha... I'm a nurse, I work at our hospital here, so I understand all the talk about Coumadin and Lovenox and heparin and such...

The little pullet is a bantam cochin from Michelle... she earned a name today, the boys named her "Sweetie" after seeing how cute she is with those chicks=) The chicks are German New Hampshires

And I have a confession... we put her in the basement, we tried keeping her box in the garage, covering it and putting the heat lamp over it, but the temp never got over 40, so in the basement she went, so I broke my own rule about warming chickens in the house, of course, hatching chicks in the middle of winter isn't very natural, either, so I suppose, well, whatever, haha

Hattie, are you putting chicks under your broodies? Mine never go broody when I want them to. Only when it is extremely inconvenient!

Sphinx, congrats, I have been loving on those little black chicks. Cute cute babies! Were you thinking Daddy was the Legbar? I bet you were surprised if so!
Those Marans genes are quite strong, I am still thinking my little cuckoo babies had the marans daddy. They sure look like marans.

Blujems thanks for the advice on the medicine by the way! i forgot to thank you. I have not had to get any yet, but it is on my shopping list to keep on hand. So far my Polish is healing up ok. Mad about the kennel, but it is for her own good. I will keep her in there for awhile, the others just love to pick and I don't want the wound to re-open. I might put the little aprons I bought on her to help with that when she goes out.

Cynthia so glad to hear good news on Richard. Now you can keep an eye on him too and be near him to help withe the worry!

Mesha, yay on those GNH chicks. I love the way the 'mama' looks admiringly at the babies. I want to try using a hen this spring if i can get one to be broody while I am hatching I think it is adorable, and I have not had the chance to try it yet. They sure look sweet when they are raising chicks, from the pics I have seen.

Deloorshens, I love that picture. She looks like she's such a great momma. I'm giggling that you broke your "no chickens in the house" rule.

Cynthia, I am so glad your son is getting released from the hospital soon. It'll be nice for his independence to be in a different part of the house and can feel like he's kind of on his own, but that you're close by if needed. You should see if there's anyone your son can talk to who is in a similar position who did go the colostromy route and see if it's the right choice for him.

Lisa, I was *hoping* the legbar rooster was the dad, but I suspected it'd be the marans. At this point, I have 6 chicks out. The last egg was put in the incubator 12 hours after everyone else. It's not technically due until tomorrow morning, so I'm not worried at all about it. I bumped up the humidity for it, and could hear it chirping in there, so it's doing just fine.

Today's going to be a tough day for me- I have completely lost my voice, have a terrible cold, and I think I have an ear infection. My ear hurts, can't hear out of that ear, and my balance feels odd. To make it a challenge, I'm closing on a house today. It's a HUD house, and he's doing Utah First Time Homebuyers, so there will be all sorts of extra paperwork. And math. Math is not my strong suit when I'm fuzzy headed like this.

Congrats on your closing Sphinx! That is exciting! Hope it all goes ok and you can get home to rest. And congrats on those chickies! What a great hatch! Is the last one that is later the cracked one or did that one hatch? I can't believe you got it to work lol way to go!

Congrats Sundance on yours too! We need pictures! Maybe the newbies will make losing your silkie not hurt so much. I am so sorry that happened!

My next 6 eggs have made it all the way through so far, going into lockdown tomorrow (Should be Sunday but I am having good luck starting a day early so I am going with the flow lol) they are due Wed night, but the same eggs last time were a day early so maybe Tue night Hopefully they work.

Cynthia, my dad had a colostomy bag put in when I was in my teens, he had colitis and fought problems his whole life. He loves that he did it. A full head of hair for the first time in his life came shortly after (he lost patches of hair all the time and finally shaved his head for years), and no worrying about trips to the bathroom at embarrassing times. He swims, keeps it tucked away in big swim shorts, it has not held him back from anything really. He has never regretted it for sure.
