Utah!

Its 8:50 pm and its 40 degrees outside, and some of my chickens are walking around outside like its a heat wave. Crazy chickens! Having an egg sandwich for dinner and the big egg was a double. Notice how the yolks are joined. I wonder if i could have got it to hatch if they would have been joined twins?

Hey guys....

Sorry for all of you that have been sick, that is so misreable, I have had a cold 3 times since November, I'm DONE being sick!!!

Cute chicks pics!! Wow, isn't that cool those chicks are actually looking to be sex-linked?? neato!!

Congrats on the eggs, Red, that is very exciting!!

My birds were all out enjoying the sun yesterday when it was 16 degrees, sunbathing, lol... I threw straw down all over so they wouldn't have to stand in the snow, they definitely have been out more since I did that... I'll have to do it again after it snows, but that's ok, gives them something to do scratch around in the straw and I need to get some of the straw used up anyway, at least it will make GREAT compost come spring, lol (if it ever comes, sheesh!)

Have 3 more eggs of my own in lockdown, the temps were not friendly when I gathered, so I was glad to get any of them to develop... But now I"m have withdrawals already, I think I'll start gathering to set some more first part of next week if they decide to lay again, the cold really puts them off, not that I blame them

MAdchicken, those doubleyolkers are sure cool!! On the NYD Hatchalong they were talking about hatching doubleyolkers, there's even a gal who was able to get one to hatch, there are videos on you-tube of her helping them hatch, pretty amazing.. supposedly both chicks lived from one egg, and one lived from another double yolker.. amazing they can fit in there!

Hello All!

I've been completely out of commission on this board for months and months because of family things and a ridiculous amount of work, but I am hoping things are lightening up now so I can resume at least an approximation of normal life. Still working 4-5 12 hour shifts each week, but it's better than the 6-7 I was doind for months there. The hospital has been horribly busy for a while now--people are really getting sick at an alarming rate this winter, and I see looking at some of the past posts that a lot of you are getting hit with the same illnesses we are seeing here. Hope everyone is at least starting to feel a little better. My boys and I have all been sick off and on for months now, and I've got the bad Mommy of the year award for not being home enough (too much work).

However, it is getting on towards that hatching and chicken time of year, though none of my chickens at the house seem to realize that since they haven't laid one stinkin' egg since October. Buggers. I'm not sure how our chickens in Duchesne are doing, since we haven't been able to get into the land for weeks now because of the snow. I'm pretty worried about them--it has been so cold, I'm afraid I might find dead frozen chickens when we get up there next. Unfortunately, all of my legbars and BLRW's are up there, so that would be a serious bummer. I wanted to try to get up there this weekend--had a big plan to bring sleds and use them to hike food up to where the coops are, since the drive into there from the main road is virtually unpassable, even with our 4WD. Now that everything is iced over, I'm not sure we're going to be able to do even that. If we can't get in there soon, we will have starved frozen chickens. Need a stinking snowmobile these days to get anywhere, I swear. If it doesn't drop anymore snow, I may try to get in this Sunday when I am finally off work for a couple of days (theoretically, though that may not actually happen :( )

I really want to start hatching eggs again soon. That big ole incubator is just sitting there staring at me longingly. Joel (my middle boy) is dying to have Welsummers again. I want a couple of Marans just for the pretty eggs. And, if any of the legbars are still alive, I would really like to hatch those eggs. And the BLRW's, of course. I don't think I will hatch as many this year as last year, though--the whole chicken plague thing that went through my place last year kind of disheartened us. I'm definitely not going to buy any chicks from folks I don't know enough about to trust, since that's where we traced that blasted disaster back to. I also don't have enough time to do as much hatching, plus Zach wants to use one of the incubators for his leopard geckos, since they are getting close to breeding. Those suckers take months to hatch out.

Anyway, must get back to work now--this has been one of the most busy nights we've had because of all the ice and the falls and fractures from it. Plus I have to get through my annual review before I go home this morning. Really just want to go to bed, since I have to be back again tonight, but it's going to be a few more hours...

Donna

Donna who is feeding and watering your chickens in Duchesene? Can you ask them to bring them out and bring them home to SLC while the weather is so bad. It would be a shame to have them suffer and die. From what I know about people in Duchesene, my son lived there for years, they are a friendly bunch and I am sure would help if asked. Having chickens is a priviledge and you really don't want them to die because of neglect, That is really abusive and I have heard so many nice things about you I can't imagine you would intentionally abuse any animal.

OM Gosh DONNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have missed you like crazy, still ask where you are all the time. Several of us were so worried about you, I am SO RELIEVED you got on to say hi, we miss miss miss miss you. Welcome back :) :) :) :)

I am so happy to see you on here, yay!

***Sundance, I think you misunderstood her comment. She has a pretty self sustaining thing going on over there in Duchesne, and there are a LOT of chickens, it is a huge compound, there is water and huge amounts of food are left at a time.. And other people help take care of them. Donna is an absolute animal fanatic, and would never really ignore her animals :love I understand the weather may have just made it hard briefly to get there but she will do all she can to get in there I am sure.

MadChicken, that egg is really cool. I bet it wouldn't have developed properly- that definitely looks like conjoined twins, and I think they have enough trouble getting two separate yolks to hatch. But, stranger things have happened.

Corvidae, it's wonderful to see you again. You were missed. I really, really hope you can get out to Duchesne soon. Your BLRW and legbars are so beautiful, it would be such a shame for some harm to come to them. Do you know anyone in town who could check in on them so you don't have to make the trek with such bad roads? I used to have family in town there, but I don't think anyone actually lives there anymore.

I just went out to check on my ladies and my barred rock is molting! In JANUARY! Is this normal? My speckled sussex molted her neck feathers in the fall. I've been noticing a lot of BR feathers out there, but when I looked at her she looked like she'd just lost the feathers around her vent, which for some reason always have poo in them. Her vent isn't blocked, just gross feathers back there. I haven't tried to clean her in the winter because it's too cold. So is it normal for a chicken to molt in January after the coldest cold spell we've had in years? She looks pretty pathetic.

I finally got an egg again today!

I've been checking the boxes just as part of my routine even though there hasn't been an egg in weeks. I'm pretty sure it was the BSL, it had a black feather on it.

My teenage son is desperate to hatch one or more emu.

Is there any place local to purchase fertile eggs that anyone knows of?
it has been a long time dream of mine to have emu but i do not have the land for one but it sure would be funny to see the neighbors reaction to them :lau donna here is hoping all your flock is doing great. if you do hatch legbars let me know :) yes i am still after a legbar lol. good to hear from you :) just so you all know there is a 20% off coupon for cal ranch on their facebook page but its only for the next few days and cant be used on things like feed, guns and all that good stuff.
