These were raised extensively on the many small farms near the village of Houdan in France; and this locale and the lovely black plumage in which many feathers are tipped with V-shaped white spots give them their name. The flowing crest, V-shaped comb, muff of feathers at the throat, and the 5th toe give them an unusual appearance and make them a standout in any poultry show. Houdans are fine boned, juicy, white skinned flesh, and they are good layers of white eggs. Although in the crested breed family, they are larger than Polish. Baby chicks are patched with black and white all over, and the little crest, beard, and 5th toe help identify them at once.

Hey everyone!!! Its been forever since I have been on here. Im still in chickens though.... My addiction runs deep lol. I had a sick chicken that moved into the house for a few weeks as I nursed her back to health. Is it possible to have a chicken with a mental disability?

My mom and aunt gave me a small incubator. I set my first eggs this weekend!!! This is better than Christmas! Lol

I am in Idaho Falls... I have a Hova-Bator I don't use.. only been used twice.. just too small for me.. LOL PM if you are interested... shipping probably wouldn't be much as they are light.

Lisa, I really do want a silkie. I probably would've bought Sundance's baby from her, but it was significantly smaller than my babies, so it would've had trouble in my brooder.

Sundance, those babies are looking good. Love your new brooder.

Hattie, I'm sorry some have liquid in the bottom. I think I'd be tempted to not bump the humidity up at all to help those guys out. I've always done the dry incubation method and have great luck with it.

Cynthia darling, I have olive eggers in my brooder- they're the legbar/fbcm mix. At least, I assume they'll be olive eggers. It'll be interesting to see what they lay.

Acemario, there's many people who feel that mutts or cross breeds are better- they call it hybrid vigor. Purebreds tend to have more genetic illness because their gene pool is smaller. But, they're more reliable- you'll know basically what the chicken will look like, what it will lay and how often. With a mix, it's kind of a crapshoot. I have three roosters- a legbar, a french black copper marans, and a golden laced polish. At this point, I think only the marans is getting any action with the ladies- everything from my flock that's hatched in the past few months has been his baby. I have legbar, lavender ameraucana, and a fbcm/lav am cross, RIR, BLRW, and speckled sussex all laying. So that would be the sort of mix you'd get. My fbcm, coronation sussex and wellsummer all not laying, and my frizzle is still too young.

I'm tempted to buy another incubator. I have so many teachers wanting to hatch in their classrooms that mine runs constantly from March until the end of May. If I got a second, it would allow more teachers to hatch- it's kind of first come, first served right now.

This morning I went out to get eggs. I got another olive egg. I also got a blue egg that I believe belongs to my lavender ameraucana. This is where it's weird though- it seemed like it had a bunch of egg yolk on it, and I saw gooey stuff in the nest box. But, no shell at all anywhere. This is the second blue egg in a few days that I've thought was hers- she hadn't laid since Novemberish. Do you think she's just having kinks getting things going again, or do you think she could have something wrong?

I think it is, personally. My mom has a cockerel that has physical handicaps, and because of the way he behaves sometimes, we've wondered if he's also special in the noggin. We sure love him, though.

And, I know chickens can get depressed and act sick from it. One of my pullets has been that way all winter, so she gets extra love and attention.

My other Olive eggs came today..and, she sent me 4 extra. Some from her Marans hen, and her OE roo. I had to show how big one of the Marans eggs were! It would be so neat if I had twins hatch..if it isn't a double yolker, that baby is going to have a lot of room to grow in!

be if two developed..and I know, I would have to help them out.
