I had a dream about chicks from the feed store last night. I am going to prey tonight for no more nightmares. I have thrown a blanket over the brooder so i cant see it. I pretend that the Bantam EE is just trying really hard to lay an egg in the nest box (for the last week). I even sold a broody silkie to Brlarson84. I told myself last spring i was only going to replace 2 hens. My top 2 hens, but at two years old i still get 3-4 eggs a week from each, and one has been molting for 2 months and the other came out of her first molt couple months ago. And i still have to breed the silkes and i want to try the bantam sex links.....WAIT.....ITS.....STARTING.....NO!!!!!! Find a happy spot. find a happy spot.find a happy spot......

Suddenly it occurred to me that with my 3 boys at ages 20, 17, & 14 odds are good that one or more of them would pop a mealworm right in their mouth JUST to teach me a lesson

So, Gary, did you have a nightmare like that..or were you thinking of these things while you were awake? Kind of sounds like some of the talking I do with myself at times.

Thats ok, its good protien for them. If they did that just be calm and say glad they realize they needed more protien in their diet. Don't let them know they got to you. Then after they are out of your site go into the bathroom and throw up

Good morning everyone

I have some questions for you experienced chicken keepers. Mine are giving me trouble and I am not sure what to do. Sigh. I did extensive reading here in the forums but there is so much information that i thought i ask in a smaller group. I get easily confused, you know LOL I really want to do right by my girls.

2 of my ladies have vent gleet. At first I thought it was mites (the have that too, scaly leg mites which I treated with Adams Spray). I have given them yogurt from the front and back

thinking it couldn't be bad in case the probiotics won't make it to the designated area. By now they are looking at the yugurt and then at me as if they want to say 'Again????'

In addition I applied metronidazol creme around their vents and preparation H to care for the bloody crusts. They look all better now but this morning it occurred to me that i never flushed out their systems with a laxative. Do I still need to do so or is it too late? They do get ACV in their water, one TB per gallon. Also one of my beloved hens is still laying eggs with a small amount of blood on them. This morning I found her hiding under the nest boxes, trying to lay an egg while the boss hen was pecking at her vent. I was not a happy camper and shooed the lead hen away.

She appears fine otherwise. Just her skin is a bit red from all the bathing and blow drying to keep her vent area clean and remove the crusts. I might try some calendula spray if I can find any to relieve her skin. Needless to say I feel a bit overwhelmed and need some advice. I really had a crash course in chicken care this winter and all the information here on the boards is fantastic.

Also, I did use Ivermectin on my girls about 2 weeks ago thinking they were all mite or lice infected. Do I need to give them another dose? I really dislike bombarding their systems with so much chemistry. I have some poultry dust I could use and DE as well which I put in the spots where they dust and I dusted the whole coop.

I had an oops moment this morning. I was in the process of adding eggs to an incubator when I noticed a chick riding in the turner..............and another one pipped!! Yep.....I miscounted the number of eggs that were supposed to go into lockdown last Sunday. In fact, I didn't even have these two on my list. I had to go through the rest of my incubators to make sure I didn't leave more of that set in the turners. I only had three golden cuckoo marans on my list.....but no........I had set five. Gah!

Now wait. You got a roo? Did you get two? I thought you had one laying..oh dear. Foggy old brain, was it Sphinx that has one? I think Dalooras has one..or two? I have a friend here that has one. Then some went to people I didn't know.

Yep.....I miscounted the number of eggs that were supposed to go into lockdown last Sunday. In fact, I didn't even have these two on my list. I had to go through the rest of my incubators to make sure I didn't leave more of that set in the turners. I only had three golden cuckoo marans on my list.....but no........I had set five. Gah!

Wow, sounds like you are doing a lot for your chickens. First, they do NOT need any more yogurt. If you have wormed them, then yes. Give them some once a day, for two days. That should be good. Too much yogurt can give them diarrhea and then crusties on their vents because of the diarrhea. Worming? If you have actually seen worms you can worm them. Not that many people do. I just went through this because I did see a worm in one of the droppings. If you see it, then the rest probably have them..which, they do anyway, but they may have more than they should. So I wormed them all. I started with Wazine first, then the harder stuff..but you have already wormed with the Ivermectin..which, can also cause diarrhea. They will have lose stools after medicating, and, because your giving yogurt. 2 week is right. If they were given the medication 2 weeks ago, then follow up with it at the 2 week point. You may want to chuck the eggs. Not everyone does, but I am doing the with drawl period before I eat egg again.
Yaay! I get to eat eggs again come this Sat. ) Anyway, I would NOT give them something to clean them out..sounds like they've been pretty cleaned out already.

Just don't give them any thing more until you are done worming, and then, I would just let them be, let their digestive systems get back to normal. After you have given them their second dose of worming meds, and the yogurt for 2 days, I'll bet you will see things getting better within 5 days. Poop, should start looking like normal chicken poo. ) You don't want to bombard their systems with too much at the same time. They need a break, especially after something like Ivermectin. Let them be, and see how they do. I wouldn't even put the vinegar in their water for now. Nice clean water every day. Hope this helps! Good luck.
If you hen really does have vent gleet, you would know it by the smell..pretty bad from the sounds of it. It's a fungus thing. I copied this from a guy that really knows his stuff. I always go to him if I have problems. That's how I learned about the worming method. He prefers buttermilk to yogurt. Thing is, you need to decide if it is really vent gleet. Go to one of his sites. dawg53 Do you have pictures? It's a pretty nasty looking thing all right!

I would treat the whole flock. Vent gleet can be contagious. It is bad bacteria expelled in fecal matter which could be picked up by another chicken. This is why probiotics should be given to get the gut bacteria back in balance. I recommend buttermilk mixed in feed rather than yogurt. You can also use nystatin to treat vent gleet rather than copper sulfate. I havnt found anything regarding withdrawal for copper sulfate, but I suspect there is a withdrawal period....same with nystatin. You might want to try googling withdrawal times for either product. You might have better luck than I did. I dont have it in any of my references neither. Sorry.

Another thing..I wouldn't be treating for the gleet and worms at the same time! If your chicken does have gleet, I would treat that. You have wormed them once, my guess, is that they are fine. If they do have gleet, it needs to be treated. Do you have pictures? I am going to send a picture, which my guess again is, you've already seen some..

Riding in the turner. lol..cute...yaay for chicks riding in the turner, and pips. I have done that before, miscounted, or, they came early, and I was shocked to see a chick 2 days early! but...last Sunday? Oh well, here come some babies! We want pictures of them..ya know.

Hey guys!! I've been sick for yeah, about a week now, blech... not totally better but at least I can function, sheesh... all I can say is I am DONE being sick!! ENOUGH!! Washing everything and hoping the weather will warm into the 40's again so I can air the house out, lol...

More eggs going into lockdown on Friday, yay!! It's looking more and more like I will be selling my Ameracaunas later this year, so I will probably sell all of the chicks that I hatch, too... soooo.... Ameracauna chicks anyone?? I will also have some blue/black copper chicks hatching, they will also be available. I will sell them straight run until I can tell what they are, then will ask more for the pullets once it's clear they are pullets... just FYI.....
