Utah!

She is having a hard time breathing. I tubed her earlier. She just started sucking and drank about an oz. of milk. I gave her some vit. B, a vit. E capsule and an antibiotic. she is warm now and sucking but still panting pretty good. Hopefully she continues to improve. I am hesitant to say she will make it but we are making progress.

Maybe some Dexamethasone which is a steroid would help her lungs.

Well...i done it! I have moved Momo inside. She is sitting on 2 RIR, 2 Dominique, and 1 Buff Orpington. I know i was going to get 1 more RIR but she didn't lay, and in didn't want to miss my little girl being so broody.

Nice looking chicks Cynthia.

Congrats on the broody Red, i think she needs a couple more eggs under her.

Oh my goodness! Blu congrats on those gorgeous baby goats! I sure hope the girl is ok.

Cynthia...that middle EE in those first pics---the beard and muffs are ah-mazing! love it! I sure hope it is a girl for you.

Red, I cannot believe Nora is broody lol! How fun is that?!

Madchicken good luck with your broody girl as well.

At the moment, I have only 1 broody, 2 weeks ago I had 4. One of my FBCM, of course the one that lays the nicest dark eggs, is sitting and squealing. My son keeps dunking her in the snow, he is being so mean to her, he likes giving her a hard time. I have to giggle a little, she gets so mad at him. But within the hour, she is back at it. Hopefully she will stop soon, I don't dare put eggs out there under her yet, it is still crazy cold up here in the north end. (5 degrees this morning!) looking forward to the warmer next weekend.

Madchicken, when I moved my broody tonight, I found at least ten eggs under her

They weren't all hers, which means that the others have been sneaking out there, too! I took away a couple that I could tell were toast from the freezing temps (there's a contradictory statement for ya!) She still has a couple that I'm not so sure about, so I will check them in a day or two.

I'm glad I got her moved, though. I would have been worried sick that some animal would get her out there. She didn't give me much protest, just a bit of a soft squawk like, "Hey! What are you doing?" I think she'll stay on those eggs, though, even after being put in the garage in her own carrier.

My mom's all nervous now about what we are going to do with more chicks. If I'm right about these eggs my pullet is sitting on, I don't think we'll get more than two or three chicks. It's just been too cold outside.

Well she is good this morning, trying to stand very shakily but trying. She is looking good they all ate this morning and seem well.

Blu, I hope that little doe is okay. You guys take such good care of your animals. On a little bit of a different note, it seems like you've had a lot of bucks born this last year. Is that normal for goats?

Cynthia - Are those really my babies? They are so cute. I can see the Icelandic in all three of them. That buff is definitely Thelma's baby - my OE. And I was wrong about the other two. Looks like their momma is Jemma, my blue Ameraucana. How cool! There's got to be at least one girl in there for you, right?

We have had 18 Nigerians born so far and 9 have been girls and 9 have been boys. You never know. Some years it is mostly girls, some years boys.
Maybe some Dexamethasone which is a steroid would help her lungs.
Dex might have helped but we have a hard time getting meds from our vet. Luckily she is not panting like night or I would have tried to get some today.

Blu, I'm glad she's doing alright this morning.

My broody girl is still pancaked out on those eggs

I'm mushy! I love mush! Pour it on sweetheart! We love you just as much back I hope ya know!

That girl sounds pretty broody. Pretty sure she will stick it out now if she hasn't gotten off of them since you moved her. I had a real hard time breaking my leghorn mix. Kept taking her out of the nest box during the day, and bless her heart. She would lay down right there where I put her! I would have to take her over to the food, then she would eat, then back to the box. But I removed her several times a day..for a week! Finally, she started staying away from the nest box longer and longer, and without doing the cluck cluck sounds. So, now, we will all be waiting on seeing how many babies she hatches. How fun!

blu, if I could only get away with it! I would have some of those cuties. I'm so happy that little girl is doing better. You know what you are doing, that's for sure!

I have 8 OE's! All black but two blues. So, cyndi, I have some OE's! I now have several EE's pipped. A day early again. I got to thinking about what Hattie had said about me always having them come early. There is a site that talks about how NOT using the vent plugs after 10 days does so much for a growing chick. I am one not to use a plug, except once in a while to raise the humidity if needed..then I take it back off. I learned that from when I had that bator that Sasha bought from me. You can open that door during hatches no problem. Well, I've always been one to snatch a new baby out after it hatches so it doesn't bother the other eggs. Well, not always, but the last couple of years. Anyway, no plugs in the vents. Helps the chick mature quickly. I will try to find the article on it later.
So, RED, you will have to watch and see how often your broody gets off the nest to eat, drink, and poop, that wonderful experience of a smell you will have.

Maybe you can make sure the food is smooth on top, to know if she has been up or not while you aren't there. That's what I did with my blue splash silkie. I could see that it was messed up when she went to eat. Then of course, she would go to the other end of the hutch to poo. When is gets near time for lock down, especially watch. I would love to know if she gets off the nest, or if she is still turning eggs. You just sit there and watch for us..ya hear?

Off to the dentist! Cleaning.

Blu, congrats on the kids! They are so cute. I hope that doe continues to improve.

Cynthia, those chicks are so cute. I can't believe the muff on that one.

Red, awww, right back atcha!

Congrats on your broody hen. Any idea how far along the eggs are? Good luck.

Lisa, hope you can fix your broody soon.

Is it going to jinx me if I admit I've only had one hen ever go broody on me?

Sundance, is your twin frizzle to mine laying yet? Mine's comb is still pale, but her wattles are getting really dark.

I moved my chicks outside a couple days ago. They look totally feathered in, and are basically the same size as my frizzle. At 6 weeks, it's a little on the early side, especially for winter, but I was cleaning their brooder twice a day and my house just stunk. I have the brooder light quite close to the ground, and they seem to be doing just fine.
