Utah!

Sundance, did you get that cast of your baby? How is that leg looking? I hope it is well as the vet thought it would be.

I have 8 EE's hatched. 7 are doing well. Not sure if one is going to make it. The most strange thing. When I candled to go into lock down, this egg had NO air sac to speak of. I could see blood vessels and clots all through the bottom. I could see the chick moving around in there, a lot! I kept turning the egg in different positions to see the air sac. None! I just went ahead, put it in lock down because I knew it had no air sac. I put a question mark on it.

Well, I decide last night that I would pip it, since so many had already hatched, and there were pips everywhere. When I did, all of this bloody gooy thick stuff was right there, where the air sac should have been, and it started oozing out..sorry, pretty yucky I know. But I've never had this..anyone else?
I went ahead and stated removing more shell from the bottom part. I thought I could hear chirping coming from in there..I thought no way, this chick is dead. How could it possibly chirp in all of this thick stuff? I went to move more shell, and the shell just crumbled in my hand. I thought, oh well, I'll just remove the chick from it all, wanted to see what I was missing out on, because there is a certain color of EE I was looking forward too. I could hear chirping..for sure! I hurried and lifted the neck out of the thick goop. It started to breath, that not so good of breaths. I thought I would just put it in the bator to absorb the yolk. It's still alive. It's moved a bit every time I checked it, but it moved more when I picked it up to clean it a bit. I put a wet paper towel on it's bottom so the yolk would stay moist enough to absorb.
I just went and checked it again. That baby is moving and chirping, and most of the yolk is absorbed! It hasn't opened it's eyes on it's own, but it is moving around. I will now start some electrolytes and hope this baby makes it, and that it is a girl.

I had an egg like this, but it was a duck egg. All the other eggs had hatched or were zipping, and this egg had been pipped for 24 hours and no more progress. So I started helping it, slowly...the poor little duckling was encased in a gel-like goo. It was awful. Yolk not fully absorbed. I helped him out of his shell over about half a day's time. Kept him in the bator for another day to keep him in the humidity. He made it and was strong and healthy after a rough start. :)

Cynthia, I am so glad your little one is doing so well.

All the Vampire talk made me laugh...My monster would love that. She had a couple years where she would tell people she was a Vampire. She had a whole story about it. Her Vampire Parents gave her to us to raise. They were from VampireVille.....She has a very good Imagination and I think she believed it for awhile.....LOL I haven't thought of that for a long time.

Lisa sorry about those eggs, it is bad enough that the color is off. But to have so many bad eggs sucks.

I can totally picture your monster talking like that !

I candled the eggs I have from you, still cannot see in those Sparkles eggs much, but they are rolling to the side, so I know there is a chick in them. 2/3 for sure. So hope I get a girl! Those little chipmunks are so cute. They are due Tue morning, but every hatch this year has been 24 hrs early at least, so maybe Monday! Yay! The guy I am getting showgirl eggs from did not ship yet, he wrote and said that they started laying funky with the weather so he is not getting enough to collect them within a few days time, worried about them being fresh enough, so he is waiting a couple weeks. That might be a good thing, I am going to be overrun with chicks until I can get some sold in the next week or two, and I am grateful he cared enough to wait :)

Cool I have one left from sparkles, the other had quit. Mine go into lockdown tomorrow, so Hopefully I have a good hatch this time.
That was cool that he is waiting, How many showgirl eggs are you getting?

I ordered a dozen and he said he would send extras for sure. He is also sending the frizzled NH at the same time, 6 plus extras. :) I guess we will have to wait a little longer, tell the Monster to hang in there, we will get some eventually!

Good luck with your eggs, I hope that sparkles' baby makes it! Is she still laying?

Not as much but I get 2-3 a week, that's not bad for an old lady.

Lisa, I'd be disappointed too. Has the seller responded? I've only bought shipped eggs once. I had an amazing hatch rate (6 out of 7 in my brinsea) especially considering they were shipped from TN in December. However, of the 6, only ONE was the correct breed. The others were mutts, and one was completely wrong.

Darbygill, Congrats on your new incubator and welcome. I'm wild with jealous- I'd love an Octo. I personally incubate around 35% until lockdown, and then crank it way up. I have the brinsea mini, so basically, I just keep a little bit of water in the one well, and let it completely run out before I add more. If you can figure out a way to meet up with me, I'm *guessing* that my legbar/black copper marans offspring would lay olive eggs, and best of all, they're a sex link (I recently discovered), so you'd know at hatch if you had boys or girls.

Sundance, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband's friend. What a nightmare, to find out and dies so quickly. Is there anything I can do to help you guys out? I love your cluckingham palace sign. That is so cute.

Corvidae, I am dying over your zombie chicken.

Cynthia, glad your miracle chick is being such a fighter!

My polish girl has started laying again!

Met up with cyndi this morning. She's a youngin! Pretty cute gal. So many sweet and good people in the chicken world.

Here is my little one when she was fighting for her life.

Here she is today, sitting up and running around, and after a bath

So sweet

I just had a nice visit from Joybells. I drug her around and let her see all my chickens cats and chicks. She came away with polish rooster and a couple of pullett chicks. nice girl. As always its a pleasure to heet someone from BYC Picture also shows Jacque in his new splint waiting it around for sympathy. His leg is a bit sore from lack of support but I think hes doing ok
Light box has 2 chicks in it

Okay, I'm sneaking a post in while I'm at work, so I'm still catching up on reading. However - Lisa, assuming my remaining Ameraucana cockerel doesn't disappear (or if he does, that I can procure another Am. boy in the near future) I may try breeding him to my blue Am. pullet, who lays light blue eggs. If so, you're welcome to some blue eggs from me

They may not be the darkest blue, but they ARE blue.
