Utah!

For BSL's you need a barred or cuckoo hen and almost any rooster (non barred and not white). The female barred hens only have one copy of the barring gene and only pass it to the male offspring (makes have two copies, and pass one to each gender). So as I understand it, Gary's cross of a RIR roo over a Dominique, the female chicks will be black and the males will have white in some form that indicates barring. So pure black chicks should be female.

Here is the sexlinks thread (so helpful!!)

Thanks for posting! This stuff is so interesting....so white on the chest means male? or does the white need to be on its head?

Well I read that whole first page of info, I +think+ it is saying the chick is female? .... i think.... Goodness my brain is too old to maintain all that in my head. Thanks for the link, I am bookmarking that one for sure!

Blujems--I guess that means the Daddy of the cuckoo babies could still be the Wheaten Am OR the FBCM. So maybe an olive egger, we will have to wait and see! Fun!

Goodmorning all! The sun is out, Hooray!!! We sure had some wind last night, it knocked everything over outside. My girls were pretty traumatized this morning, so I am glad that is over. Hope the sun stays out for a bit, and the wind stays gone!

Quote: thats what i kind of thought also after read all sorts or info. It seems like my BSLink had a white chest also but the top of her head was redish color no white. In fact she looked alot like my Australorp except the red head. Hopefully this is right cause then both the chicks are hens.

I had 7 babies hatch out of the 8 that went into lock down. The white eggs that she told me were from the Exchquer....NOT. All of the small eggs hatched out blue, or maybe will be blue splash silkies. The one that didn't make it had the highest crest I've ever seen. I think that may be why..not sure that high a crest is normal! Still waiting on a couple to wake up, a blue silkie and have been working on the little bantam NN..or showgirl. What ever we call it. :) Looks to be a gray and white instead of the black. I also had a LF NN hatch. A light red. Those blue silkies are pretty. Pretty sure the dad was the buff silkie, that blue gene must be strong. The bodies are very dark!

Here are two of the silkies, just went out the door with Brandi, it's her friend, and mine..:p that the eggs came from.

Still have another blue here that is waking up. Will take pictures of that and the NN and Showgirl. So funny, the little tiny NN has feathered feet and feathers on the feet..a showgirl. :) A little one. Hope it's a girl. I may have to keep that one.

cyndi, took another look at my Marans/OE..I think it's looking like a girl now. I know, make up my mind. But, I haven't looked at the comb in a while. It is staying small. Yaay, hope so, these came from beautiful Olive Eggs! I will go get a picture of .. her. :)

Here is the marans OE

Check out that stink eye!! I am so saving this picture for a stink eye photo someday. Too
funny.

RED..here is your baby that I am keeping. I've thought girl all along.

Pretty girl.

Thanks Cynthia! SO far on 2 of them I see no redness and I am thinking for sure that 2 of mine are girls
wee.gif

The other one has almost no tail yet and looks potentially like it may have 3 rows of peas someday, but the comb is still yellow & tight to the head.

I think I may have 2 girls from the Marans I hatched from DMRippy- 1 blue & 1 black. I have never even seen a young female though- I have always had all males so what do I know?

My BLRW I guess I have to wait on, I am going to need LOTS of help with them.
