GUESS WHAT!!!!!! ELVIS LAID AN EGG!!!!

It is about time. She just celebrated her 1 yr birthday.!!

I am kinda worried about her, she has not walked at all, just sits there. I will have to check her legs out after she is totally dry. she hasn't laid an egg since she came here. How would I know if she is egg bound?

Can't believe it took so long. So how big was it?

Found another paper thin egg in the nest box this time. At least not in the door way. And yes, they had eaten, someone did anyway. I hope it's my Welsummer. She is looking very ready to lay, and if she did this in the nest box..hope she remembers where she did it the last time. She's out free ranging in the day, so hopefully that grass will strengthen the egg shell. I love it when a hen starts to lay an egg, and it's a good hard egg the first time, and in the nest box to boot! Guess I can't complain. My last several have done just that.

Do the Welsummer's start with dark eggs or begin lighter and then get darker?

Here is my Japaneses with my NN bantam..finally, one that isn't bigger than her at hatch.

I think she's telling the NN baby that she is taller...don't you? lol..or, getoutta my face!


They both fit in my hand.

I have finally been noticing that the little Japanese is growing. She even has a tiny tail
now. Pretty feisty when it comes to getting treats from my hand.

Oh Lisa, the story of the hamburg is such a good one I'm shocked that I didn't share it. It's OUTRAGEOUS. So, my friend lives in Kaysville. Has 9 chickens. Legal limit is 7, but figured that was close enough. She doesn't have a full chicken enclosure- she just lets them range around the back yard and then go into the henhouse at night. Her yard is totally fenced, except a small section between the house and the side fence. So, a couple weeks ago while she was at work, her neighbor witnessed the following: Animal Control truck driving around the neighborhood slowly. He stops the truck in front of my friend's house, peers into the yard through that open section. WALKS INTO HER BACK YARD, takes two chickens, puts them in the back of his truck and drives off. She gets a notification that she had two "LIVESTOCK" animals at large, and there's a $70 fine for each animal. She told them that a neighbor witnessed him taking them out of her back yard, and how could an animal in her own BACK yard be considered "at large"? She talked her fine down to $15/bird (I'm still ticked she had to pay anything) to get them back. She's fighting the city on the whole thing, but in the meantime, feels like she has to be totally following the rules. So, two of her birds had to go. She sent me a PM and asked if I was willing to take them in. I said suuuuuuuure, and now am the proud new owner of an EE and a penciled hamburg. They are ESCAPE ARTISTS though. They kept jumping out of the tiny hole above the door of my chicken coop to get out each day. Poor dears aren't used to be enclosed to a small area. When I split my flock between the two coops, I put them in the escape proof coop. They found another small hole that had formed over the winter. Clever birds. They've been escape free for 5 days now though, so that's great.

Cindiloowhoo, I'm still ready ready to call it on the wyandottes. Give it a couple more weeks and post new pics. There's no wattles at all yet, so that's an encouraging sign...

So just have a quick question...I am starting to think most of the issues this silky is having is because the fluff is so big that she can't see straight ahead. Should I trim it back?
This is a new one for me....What would you do?
She is a pretty little thing now that she is clean.

Blu--Elvis' egg was pretty small--bigger than a bantam for sure, but not quite store size medium. My other Polish lays a big ole egg, that surprised me. Hope your silkie girl is ok! She sure is pretty. I have had an egg bound pullet. She stood very still, all puffed up, kind of "heaving" as she breathed...it went on for days and she finally stopped eating...we tried oiling her vent (yuk) and soaking her in warm water, nothing worked so we had to put her down. But that was the behaviour I saw prior to it getting worse.. hope yours is just holding out on you. Maybe she is older? The crests have not affected mine laying really, Elvis took forever to start, but she has pretty good vision. My WCBlue polish cannot see at all and she is good layer. Is the rooster stressing her out for some reason maybe?

Sphinx, I love the story. How lucky to land a Hamburg, no shipping eggs, no hatching, no growing out and avoiding the catastrophes. Just Here ya' go! That would be awesome, she is really cool looking. Too bad about the lady fighting with the city, I would be so stomping mad, they were trespassing, the officer should be fined at the least. Too bad the neighbor did not snap a photo!

Cynthia, love the pics of the littles Seems like the few that I have had start out laying in weird spots got with the program pretty soon, I think tmost have gotten in the nests within a week or two, I had one that maybe went three weeks. Hope yours figures it out quick!

I trimmed the hair in front of her eyes. She is a lot better now that she can see.
I asked my friend and she is a year old. So she should be laying. hopefully she lays soon.
