My Leghorn. She confuses me. She runs when I try to pick her up, but lets me hold her, likes her head stroked, likes being held on her back, likes to sleep on my tummy and lap... She will also eat from my hand and approach me. She still seems timid and flighty (will peck a plastic toy bravely then run away from it pleases with herself)
I know every bird is different. But... Is she afraid of me? Or, is this normal for a socialized Leghorn...? XD LOL... I know nothing about chicken personalities.

Like I told you before, I love my leghorn. She is very friendly, WHEN, she can come up to me. She doesn't like to be approached. birdman is right, that's how they are. I just clipped my girls wings and let her out with the big girls. She is loving it. She is starting to be more calm as I walk around her, she doesn't take off, but still will keep clear, just not 5 feet away. lol.. She walks ahead of me, watching to see if I have any goodies for her. She's going to be great..I love the egg a day from this breed.

Coop update!

My bucket waterer is built into the back of my new coop but I needed to make a hook for my feed bucket. I prefer to keep them off the ground to help keep the dirt out of them. A five gallon bucket of feed weighs a little mucho to strain and hook up under the coop so I made my hook so it would swing out in front of the coop for easy access. I primed the whole thing and now I just need my wife and daughter to paint it the color they want.

The saga continues...... My MIL called this morning and told us their neighbor saw Porter (our LGD) in Moms field (right next to ours) and he was hurt... I figured since he had figured out a way through the ditch under the fence yesterday afternoon that he had just gotten past our upgraded barrier and had a scratch from the barb wire running under the fence... Well when I got out there, he was no where to be seen so I fixed the ditch blockage and went back to the barn.. I see this white over by the ducks behind the fallen tree and as I get closer I see that it is Porter and he is not moving.. When I got to him, he raised his head but didn't move.. Long story short... we got him to the vet and while there is no bullet or fragments in him, his lung is punctured and there is a perfectly round hole on his right side behind his shoulder along his rib cage.. So no surgery.. the xray did show fluid in his lung and an air pocket in the body cavity.. vet said there was no current air leakage and no evidence of current bleeding.. so he is to rest for a week, penicillin shots etc..

I called the sheriff because of our previous dealing with the crazy neighbor but even though he agrees Porter was probably shot, there is no proof.. I hate to think the neighbor shot him but don't know what else it could be... It is exactly in the location of a "kill shot" for those that hunt... I think we got lucky and they used a 22 from a long enough distance that while the bullet penetrated but took his thick long fur in with it and when Porter moved his fur pulled the bullet out..

He should be fine.. the "incident" is on record and we will hope for the best...
 
Birdguy, I am so sorry about Porter. I'm glad he's going to be ok. Would the sheriff take a statement from the vet saying the injuries are consistent with a bullet wound as proof?

Sundance, I'm sorry, I thought I was going to Chickenstock, but it turns out to be the same weekend I'm doing my 50 mile bike ride. Your babies are settling in nicely here. :)

So sorry, We had a neighbor do that to our dog, only it was through the testicles. Hope he heals up and it doesn't happen again.
 
Hey everyone, I was told to come visit the Utah Board.

My name is Karen and I live in Cedar Hills. We are new chicken parents. We rescued our first one's out of a trash can at the local gas station, and then added a few more. Not sure what some of them are since we got them from a Preschool, but the ones that I do know are 2 Barred Rocks, 2 RIR, and 2 EE, and then have 4 mystery babies. I do know we have 1 Roo in the bunch, so I will probably have to find him a new home, I'm sure I can't keep him here in Cedar Hills.
 
I just got back from Wheeler Farm. met Pancake Shiners Aka Cassandra. She is taking my beloved ruby, I saw the scotch Highlanders and their baby. I am surprised how much that little field Trip wpre me out. Mad Chicken is coming over tonight to get my RIR and her babies.
