Utah!

Yes I agree the thing is I still have 8 chicks left and 2 turkey chicks. The hubby is putting out traps today and last night he set up a carcass with poison. He checked it today and it was gone. I'm hoping that it was just the one racoon but it did take 7 chicks 4 that where about 10 weeks old and 4 chicks that where about 4 weeks old. That seems like a lot of food for one racoon but I wouldn't know.

If anyone has any suggestions for us on how to get rid of racoons we would sure appreciate it =)

To me, that sounds like a fox!! The one I had many years ago cleaned me out of about a dozen hens in one night.

The Fish and Game could help you...I've known others they helped with raccoons.

He looks like a frizzled Cochin to me
Oh man, I was thinking he might be some kind of Frizzled or Cochin Mix. So sad I will probably have to re-home him. Hopefully he will just stay quiet. lol. I'm really thinking another of the mystery preschool chicks is going to be a Roo too, he has a huge comb, still yellow, but the chick just isn't feathering out at all. Hoping with the warm weather and the chick being outside will make some feathers start coming in.

Sundancenbare e-mailed me today while I was at work...I had a nice surprise when I checked my e-mail! She told me to come get her Seramas...for a steal. So...I jumped in my car and drove down to take them off her hands and relieve a little bit of pressure on poor Diana.
I put a hen, the white roo and the hen's 2 chicks in one box together. When I got them home and opened that box....this is what I found...

The rooster was sheltering/warming the chicks! It was the sweetest sight! I'm totally in love with this rooster now.

I am so happy you got those babies. Well, a rooster isn't a baby. But glad you have them. I feel better now. If you don't want to worry about coming down for this other one. I could be fine with that. :) If you still want the tiny thing, it's still here. Man, I wonder if that rooster is as friendly to people, you will have to let us know. That is just too precious..you got a great shot!

Ha, someone asking for a rooster. Lisa, that's a switch. If you don't have a rooster, I have one that just hatched that looks like it could be a boy. It's going to be mostly white, but has a smoky color over the white on the head/cap.

Welcome Evey!
I have more going to hatch May 8th.
Hey Sasaha..interested in a Houdan? Not sure, maybe not considered a bantam. ?? Anyway, these are all girls. I have 10 coming. Hope they do ok. :/

I have Lavender Orpingtons hatching. Very pretty! And one of my Ameraucana's is pipped. Come on Amerauracanas, I want a splash really bad, and these are supposed to be mostly splash.
I am usually complaining about huge air cells, these were given to me by a friend that hatches for schools, and someone didn't want them after all, so, she asked me. Me? Muah? Need you ask?

The air sacs are tiny! Will have to watch them..anyway, she has these in separate pens, so they are pure. I'm excited. I just may keep one of those fuzzy butt Orpingtons. Such a pretty color. I love their full skirts. Time to sell a big girl girl again. It's hard. I love all of the ones I have laying right now. They all get along pretty well too. I have a blue EE that could be an Olive Egger, from the same friend that gave me eggs months ago. She said she might be. Some of her blues were laying OE's. I will know soon, she is squatting for me. That will make for two new layers recently. Although, that Welsummer is taking her time getting going. I've only gotten three eggs, and the one yesterday was such a soft shelled one! I barely touched it and the shell bent in. Very thin. Put some oyster shell out for her.

Gonna start breeding my crosses next week... Unfortunately I have no way to candle eggs, so I just have to hope that they are fertilized. Resorted to the possibility of purchasing show-quality Polish birds, possibly... Since I'm on budget, not the best choice, but it's what I have to do, right? owo Contacted the association on Facebook to see if there might be any breeders in the valley. I also didn't want to contact them because it makes me nervous, all these experienced breeders, when I know absolutely nothing, especially when it comes to show quality birds.

Bianca my Leghorn is now my favorite chick. She fell asleep in my hand on our walk today! She's more tame that I'd ever think she'd be! And my (brother's) Welsummer isn't too bad either. XP

Started drawing again. Yay.

Silly, if your neighbor is calling animal control that often, I'm surprised that the city isn't irritated with him by now. There's probably not much they could do, anyway, but if it were for ridiculous reasons, I would hope that at some point they'd tell him to knock it off or something. I'm sorry you have a grouch for a neighbor, though. There are a couple of us on here that have had neighbor problems, as well. It's unfortunate that some people just feel the need to cause problems.

Evey, I'm sorry you've had such a rotten time trying to establish a flock

I can honestly relate. I lost so many birds last year to dogs, raccoons, natural death, and other ways that I still haven't figured out. I lost count of how many chickens and chicks I lost, but I lost at least three turkey poults, all to dogs. I've also dealt with some losses this year, and it can be quite discouraging. Hang in there, work on catching those predators, and keep refortifying the coop. That's all I can say. I hate raccoons like no other predator. They're greedy and wasteful, and they carry so many diseases. Foxes can be very crafty, too, and they stash their kills. Thankfully, I haven't run into those yet. Don't think we've had much skunk activity here, either, but I believe they dig.

(side note - this editor keeps underlining "raccoon" in red, no matter how I spell it. How stupid)

Sundance, thank you - After my week's worth of lock down, I will let you know if I can come get some denegard. I really, really don't want this spreading, whatever it is. And Lacey is starting to fit in. She will come around the rest of the flock now when they eat. I do have a couple of girls that think they need to chase her off, so they may get put in timeout for a bit, but my head hen has decided that she's okay. I knew I should have gotten two girls from you. Ah well, I will continue to work with them.

My broody seems to be doing better today, but she's still not 100%. I think I am going to give the garage a good, thorough deep clean tomorrow after work to make sure that everything is dry, clean, and comfy. The water containers I keep in there keep getting tipped over, so I'm sure that doesn't help. And I took my two hatchery chicks outside for the first time today. They enjoyed it

Aww. Orpingtons <3 There are so many chicks I am tempted to snatch up, but ultimately, it's the whole 'getting rid of my big girls' that holds me back. I can't stand to part with any of my current girls, so I'll be waiting for a while to really add a big group of chicks to my flock. I'm thinking I will keep the two hatchery chicks I have, as I don't like to separate buddies and they do well together. They can be my next generation of layers for my flock. Considering how many layers I already have, though, and how young the "big girls" are, I don't think I need to worry about replacements for a couple of years, at least. I think I've only got two girls out there that were bred specifically for high egg production (RIR and Leghorn), and even when they stop laying, they'll have a home with me. The rest of the girls probably won't burn out as soon, I'm thinking.

I'm not counting my mom's chickens in this
