Utah!

yes it is fully legal to kill magpies in utah. they actually used to pay a bounty like they do with the coyotes now but they do not do that now as far as i know. so knock them dead :D i keep a pellet gun handy in case i ever need it ;)

Meh, I rather like magpies, what with their tuxedos and all. Fairly intelligent birds, too, though not as much as crows and ravens. They don't have magpies back east-- I missed them when I lived in New England. Used to be legal to shoot down hawks and falcons, too, back in the day. Ranchers would sit out during migration season and shoot them down in droves. Then they hit the endangered list, and one isn't supposed to do this anymore. I learned a serious respect for raptors when I was a falconer and, I guess by extension, an appreciation for a lot of birds as well as natural predation. In any case, any bird that has the class to wear a tuxedo I'll give a nod of respect to. :) I'm kinda Wierd that way. Maybe my kids come by it naturally!

i respect that. i have not shot one down yet but if i have to i will. i am a animal lover and birds are very special to me. that said i value some other birds more and if needed i will protect those birds. but killing is something i take very seriously and i will not do it unless i have to. that is so cool you were a falconer! i have always wanted to do that.

"A person may kill Black-billed Magpies, Cowbirds, House Sparrows, European Starlings, or Domestic Pigeons (Rock Doves) by any means, excluding bait, explosives or poison, and only on or over the threatened area."

Well, according to the Utah Administrative Code effective April 1, 2013... everyone can use explosives to blow up those stinkin magpies!!!!

Wait... I just realized it says EXCLUDING, not INCLUDING... So go take back that dynamite!

This is the second egg I have gotten from my silky hen. It has no yolk but I think things might be starting to work again.

Aquarium thermometers are great, but like suggested, I'd get several and go with the average on them.

Sundance, how awesome that you saved that duckling!!

Lame, Red. Sorry you got sucked into an uptight person's web. Care to link so we can giggle with you? Honestly, I don't understand how a joke about crossbreeding could be so offensive.

Madchicken, when I get the "gelled" chicks like that, I use a very soft toothbrush and brush their fluff. It makes them fluff right out.

I haven't had any negative runins with magpies. I suspect one ate the robin's eggs I was watching, which made me sad. But otherwise, I enjoy watching them. My chicken coops are fully enclosed and magpie proof, and they've left my cows alone, so I have no issue with them.

Good luck with your hatch, pancake.

Yeah, sorry to crush your dream of detonating sparrows Ace, but no exploding birds.

Blujems, what an unusual looking egg!

I candled the kindergarten eggs, and 18/21 look great!

This morning, I checked on my first grade eggs, and 6/7 have pipped. Not due til late Wednesday, but my legbar eggs have traditionally been hatching a day early. So, I'm trying to pull away from the internet to get the webcam set up.

Being the wife of a retired Army bomb technician, I'm sensitive about anything explosive. I just wanted to clarify what the rules state...it says by any means EXCLUDING bait, explosives or poison....so NO explosives!

Oh man, you guys. I just ordered some more eggs to incubate. We already have plans/bought supplies to make a couple new pens for the Seramas I got from Sundancen....now I'm going to have to make yet ANOTHER pen, if the hatch goes well. 28 days from the time I set the eggs....
Anyone want to take a guess?
