Ok, I'll give! Not turkey eggs...ducks eggs! They are bantams (of course) so could hatch as early as day 26, but ducks usually hatch at 28 days. Australian Spotted! I had an awesome hatch rate of 9 out of 12 Ancona duck eggs last year that came from PA, so keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi all,
I'm brand new to BYC and to keeping chickens. My daughter and I brought home 4 chickies from IFA last Friday. I've tossed around the idea of getting chickens for about two years and finally just jumped in. It helps that my cute daughter persuaded me to do it sooner than later (she is 21 - so I really should be over her "persuasiveness"). I don't have a coop yet, and am looking at KSL classifieds to see if I can find a decent one. IFA had one that I glanced at briefly. Does anyone know if the quality of their coops will hold up through the harsh weather we have here? Or can someone recommend where I can purchase a coop for four hens?

Also, I'm not sure where to locate the coop and run. I'm leaning towards having the coop situated on the north side of the garage and then have the run open to a south-eastern exposure. I feel like keeping the coop shaded from the hot southern and west sun will be more beneficial to the birds in the long run. My hubby is afraid that will be too cold for them in the winter.

I wouldn't recommend the cheaper IFA coops either. My Aunt bought one... and it only works for the warm summer months. After one year, it is already falling apart. I would either a) build one using scrap wood... if you're lookin' for a cheap solution, or b) buy a nicer (but more expensive) coop off of KSL... Good luck!

I think the IFA coops are bad. They are made in China and fall apart. Look online for coops like them and see the ratings. I think Cassandra meant the IFA custom coops are good and they are not the stock ones. We have lots of people here from Logan.

Also, as many of you know, I'm sure... I'm quickly learning that you have to clean the brooder out much more frequently with 9 chicks than with 4... (My wife thought there was a dead mouse in a wall... nope... it was just the chicks in the room across the basement! oops!) Now they're all clean and super happy!
