At some point in the near future, I'm going to have good animal news instead of bad to share. I'm sure of it. In the meantime, I guess I am picking up some more extra shifts to pay the vet bills...
I'm so very sorry about your cat, I hope they are able to save him. Last year I paid about $3500 for my Black Labradors TPLO surgery. I do dog agility, and she decided at a trial to jump off the dog walk to take a tunnel and ripped her knee apart. So I know the pain of a sudden Vet bill. My next dog will have pet insurance. I found out that its only $14.95 a month and covers a lot of stuff. I'm always in the Vet for something with my Labrador. She is a rescue dog, and she has had some major health issues from bad breeding. She is prone to cancerous tumors, and we have had 12 removed, and biopsied in the last 7 years. Every time its over $500.00 for each one, and they have all been cancerous. We also have full body x-rays done on her every year to find the ones that we can't feel. So I have the million dollar dog at my house. Hopefully everything goes smoothly for your poor kitty.I've decided we are having the animal month from hell. The boys woke me up this afternoon at 1 pm (went to bed at 8 this morning), freaking out because something was wrong with one of the cats. At first I was annoyed (and more than a little groggy), but once I saw the cat, it was clear there was something very wrong. He had extreme abdominal tenderness and had soiled himself and was obviously trying very hard not to move.
Have you any idea how hard it is to find an open vet on Memorial Day weekend? I must spent a good hour trying to find one. Finally got one in Midvale, but Zach and I were obligated to go to the kitten nursery (Zach volunteers there), so we got Grampa to take the cat and my other two boys off to the vet. After 4 hours at the vet, I finally get to talk to the vet on the phone to get the scoop on what was going on with the poor cat. Looks like he either got hit by a car or mauled by a dog (vet wasn't sure which). He had tons of gravel and crap in his fur and in his mouth. He had a nasty size abdominal herniation with a fair amount of bowel loops through the muscle. He needs surgery to repair it and the whole stinking mess is going to cost me about $4000.
So the cat will be at the vet for a few more days. They are taking him to surgery either tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on how stable the surgeon feels he is. He had some elevated liver enzymes as well, so they are a little concerned that they are going to get in there and find more damage than they could see on the x-rays.
I'm having a minor stroke over the cost, of course, but the cat is less than a year old and as friendly and affectionate as one could ever wish for. Really, though, the bottom line is that I just couldn't look at my oldest son and tell him I'd rather save the money for something "more important." He is all about the animals in the world and is massively attached to his pets. The things we do for our kids...
And on a sidenote, the vet also found a BB lodged under the cats skin that looks like it's been there a few weeks or more. Some idget shot my cat. What the hell is the matter with people? It's not like this is a cat that gets into fights or yowls or anything. He neutered, very happy, very sweet. Jerks.

What Vet office did you take him too? I'm sorry, but maybe if he really is that bad off, it might be better to let him go now rather then let him suffer a few days. I know its hard to explain to a child or even an adult to let a pet go, but it might be the best thing for the poor kitty. I'm so very sorry, thoughts and prayer to your family and kittie.Ugh, the vet just called me again. Said the surgeon prefers to wait until the car is 36 hours out from the trauma before he will do surgery. He said it was to let the inflammation go down, but I am kind of wondering if it is more to see if the cat is even going to make it that long. And, of course, that is going to increase the cost, since the cat has to stay at the animal hospital for fluids and antibiotics. The surgery will apparently be Tuesday morning now. I don't think the vet is actually jacking me over-- he actually seems very concerned and very forthcoming with information. However, I do think he might be sugar coating the situation a little. Guess we'll see within the next couple of days.
I am so sorry about your cat. We have two boys that are about 8 yrs. now. Got them fixed at 5 months. We would feel so bad about loosing them or having to put them down. It will be a hard dis ion on your part, i am glad i am not in your shoes. I was raised with lots of pets and also lots of animals raised for food. When i was young about 10 yrs i had a favorite tom that was a Siamese/minx cross. He got caught in the fan belt one winter and peeled the skin of of his face. 800 dollars later he was sewn back together. I named him scar face and he lived 2 more years and got hit by a car. This time i did not take him to the vet and held him in my arms until he passed. Last year my son held his Silkie rooster in his arms until he passed away after a hawk attack. ( 6 hours). 4000 dollars is a lot of money no matter how much money you have. Good luck and once again, I am so sorry.Ugh, the vet just called me again.
