Utah!

Ok...I have decided to reduce even further...

I have the Blue Wheaten Ameraucana Trio left to go....2 hens and 1 rooster....50.00 for all 3
The rooster's comb is taller than should be but none of his kids have had that issue. The hens lay almost daily.

Also the 4 EE pullets that are close to laying.....10.00 each

plus the 6 meat roosters that are almost ready to butcher....7.00 each or 35 for all

I've decided we are having the animal month from hell. The boys woke me up this afternoon at 1 pm (went to bed at 8 this morning), freaking out because something was wrong with one of the cats. At first I was annoyed (and more than a little groggy), but once I saw the cat, it was clear there was something very wrong. He had extreme abdominal tenderness and had soiled himself and was obviously trying very hard not to move.

Have you any idea how hard it is to find an open vet on Memorial Day weekend? I must spent a good hour trying to find one. Finally got one in Midvale, but Zach and I were obligated to go to the kitten nursery (Zach volunteers there), so we got Grampa to take the cat and my other two boys off to the vet. After 4 hours at the vet, I finally get to talk to the vet on the phone to get the scoop on what was going on with the poor cat. Looks like he either got hit by a car or mauled by a dog (vet wasn't sure which). He had tons of gravel and crap in his fur and in his mouth. He had a nasty size abdominal herniation with a fair amount of bowel loops through the muscle. He needs surgery to repair it and the whole stinking mess is going to cost me about $4000.

So the cat will be at the vet for a few more days. They are taking him to surgery either tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on how stable the surgeon feels he is. He had some elevated liver enzymes as well, so they are a little concerned that they are going to get in there and find more damage than they could see on the x-rays.

I'm having a minor stroke over the cost, of course, but the cat is less than a year old and as friendly and affectionate as one could ever wish for. Really, though, the bottom line is that I just couldn't look at my oldest son and tell him I'd rather save the money for something "more important." He is all about the animals in the world and is massively attached to his pets. The things we do for our kids...

And on a sidenote, the vet also found a BB lodged under the cats skin that looks like it's been there a few weeks or more. Some idget shot my cat. What the hell is the matter with people? It's not like this is a cat that gets into fights or yowls or anything. He neutered, very happy, very sweet. Jerks.

At some point in the near future, I'm going to have good animal news instead of bad to share. I'm sure of it. In the meantime, I guess I am picking up some more extra shifts to pay the vet bills...

I am so sorry. I wish I had known. My best friend is a vet and owns an Er in Orem. I am going down there this AM for a visit. She is working a 24 hr shift there so seemed like a good way to get out of the house. Darn it.

Ugh, the vet just called me again. Said the surgeon prefers to wait until the car is 36 hours out from the trauma before he will do surgery. He said it was to let the inflammation go down, but I am kind of wondering if it is more to see if the cat is even going to make it that long. :( And, of course, that is going to increase the cost, since the cat has to stay at the animal hospital for fluids and antibiotics. The surgery will apparently be Tuesday morning now. I don't think the vet is actually jacking me over-- he actually seems very concerned and very forthcoming with information. However, I do think he might be sugar coating the situation a little. Guess we'll see within the next couple of days.

That may be a good thing. Giving the cat time to stableize and see if he is fixable. A couple days on steroids and fluids is cheaper than surgery only to have him die on table or shortly after. Good luck

These are some pictures from last year of the coop we build. This is the expensive one. Very cute and will remain the coop for our layers. Out of six nest boxes, the girls use one. I thought I had one of the new one also, but it is on my cell phone.
*this is also before we put the roofing material on.
**our house is in these colors, so the coop actually matches our house.

WOW!!! Nice coop!!

Desert.. Cool pics of your set-up, too!! And I like the horse pics, also, but it makes me miss having horses... That chick is looking CUTE!!

Sundance.... really hope you get feeling better, soon, sounds like you need to be careful about overdoing it, though!

Sent some chicks on the chickentrain Saturday to Lisa's... so sphinx, let me know when you get your little roo and Joy, when you get your SFH chicks

Been a busy weekend... sold 20 chicks, 3 pullets, and a roo, in addition to the ones sent on the chickentrain, YAY!!! No more chicks in the house (until next week, but those are sold already, lol) Moved juvies out to the grow out pen and cleaned out some brooders in the garage, down to 1 brooder in the garage WOO-HOO!!!!

Oh, and corvidea... sorry to hear about your cat... that is so frustrating

So Sorry Donna about your cat! So sad! Especially so young too.

Blu, you are going to be chickenless! This is no good. Hope all is going ok for you! I will call you after we get through his graduation party, we left for a day to try and camp overnight, did not really have that kind of time, 2 more days then we can all relax around here it has been crazy with company coming in and getting the yard ready.

Desert, love your horses, what a fun place you have~~!!

Doughie, very funny. Haha :) I will have to show that picture to him when he gets home, he will love it :)

Daloorashens, I have been selling chickies too, almost all the extras are gone, yay! Now I need to stay out of the stores, there are a lot of little ones suffering at our Cal ranch, they are bleeding, or overcrowded, I feel like I need to go on a save-a-chick mission every time I am in there. It is so sad, I hope they just give them away or have a BOGO or something to get their numbers down. They are all 3-4 weeks old and just no room to move, and the BO's were really beat up last week. ugh! I saw three of them with bloody little tails, and when you tell the personnel, they just pretend they are going to deal with it..I honestly don't think they have anywhere else to put the injured ones at.

I have Sphinx' rooster, and Joy's chicks....anyone going south from Logan that could chicken train Joy's chicks? I did not have another brooder for them, so we are improvising until we can get them down to her, and they are bigger so holler if anyone can help out with them asap :) Sphinx let me know if you want to come here before Wed or I will come to you one night after that...depends on if we go camping next weekend :) I have your boy in a kennel in my garage and he is doing good, just a little confused at what is going on. He crows but not very loud, and not very often. He sure is going to be pretty, I love his little fluffy head!

Birdguy, thanks for providing the chicken train with your folks from Id to Utah! Your dad is great!

I won't be totally chickenless....We are selling the house and goats and most of the chickens...Hopefully we will end up somewhere where we can keep a few...I would like to keep my silky, the young wheaten ameraucana and sparkles junior, plus a couple of the OE I hatched....I still have one FBCM who is broody and we are trying to decide if we want to keep her...
My Cuckoo maran just started laying again...so she has a reprieve for now.

Donna..so sorry about your kitty..waiting for an update. :(

Had a scary thing happen today. Maybe some of you have had this happen? I received a fraudulent call from my bank, saying there has been some suspicious spending on my card. They gave me a number to call back. I had gotten a call like this before, but because I had spent differently. They go by how you usually spend. I don't spend in stores. I use it for computer use only..last time I spent in a store was around Christmas.
Well, she started naming off the amount spent..today! 100 dollars. NO! 50 dollars. NO! So, I am to shred my card, and I have a new one coming. I am so glad they caught it. They said there was a 1 cent on there yesterday. Hello? Then spending today. Little thieves check to see if your card is active. Well, they declined the amounts spent today. It just didn't look right to them. I'm with Chase. So glad they caught that. I can't believe people.

Very disappointing.

Expedee (the cat) is apparently getting worse. The vet says he thinks he has SIRS but he isn't sure. He's spiking temps and they don't know why since the X-rays and ultrasound show no free fluid in the belly (no peritonitis). They are drawing another set of labs in a little while and if they come back bad, we are going to have to put him down. Everyone is so sad here. My middle son keeps trying to figure out ways to save him--the latest is selling all his possessions.

Cynthia- I've had that happen 3 times on my bank card--each time, chase has caught it and immediately frozen the card and issued a new one. Bit of a pain, but it is good to know they watch for it.

Cynthia, that is really scary! I'm glad that they caught it. I've had them call, but so far, no fraudulent charges. I bank with America First.

Lisa, if possible, I'd like to come up tomorrow evening to pick up that little rooster. I'm going to be showing houses in Perry around 6pm, so I could swing by after that. I asked my grandmother when she's going to Ephraim again, and she's not sure, but is willing to drive Joy's chicks there, if Joybells wants to come get them. That's probably not for a week or two though. I don't dare take Joybells chicks with me because I don't have a place to keep them separate with my broody and big babies, broody and eggs, and new chicks.

Corvidae, I'm sorry that Expedee is getting worse. I'm glad your vet was conservative about the surgery, so that way you don't have the expense of the surgery AND everything else if she isn't going to make it. Your poor boys. :(

I'm getting ready to make corn on the cob, can the chickens eat the husks if I through them outside to them, and can they eat any of the left over corn on the cob after it is cooked, of course with nothing on it. And I'm cutting up a watermelon, do they eat the green parts? I thought about leaving some water melon on it for them, but also letting them have the green part too.
