Utah!

Gary! Not Cotton! Oh no. I am so sorry. I hope those eggs hatch, and there is another little cotton in there. This heat is ridiculous! And it won't get better until late next week. I have been spraying my girls down, and putting frozen water in their bowls..I freeze pretty good sized bowls of water. Helps.

Brad, sorry about your bunny. Had that happen once to us in the summer back in the 90's. It's so hard to lose a pet. And with my chickens, it always seems to be mostly to weather conditions. It was a hard winter, now a hard summer, and it's just started!

Brian, of course I have to agree that those babies are just the cutest! I love those little NN's. And now you can see that leghorns have the best personality. They are fun. You will have fun watching those feather colorings change. That Dominique will change into bars. It's fun. I know they will love you, you will be holding them when you can. :))

Lisa, did you see the page on Broody breakers on The Chicken Chick Ladies site? I bought a cage just for that after I read that. I know my Bantam Faverolle will go broody again, but I'm hoping not too soon, if she does, she will go to the broody cage.

Here are her suggestions for this heat..and things to watch for while this heat is going on, and some things you can do to help them through it.

I to had a loss today. My little Cotton is gone. She got stuck between the nest box and the back wall of the Silkie coop. I dont know if she was stuck or just couldn't see to turn around. I am so sad. I hope the eggs hatch for you Sundance cause it was her last clutch.

So very, very sorry for your loss. It sounds like she was a loved pet. Sometimes fluke accidents happen, & it's so unexpected.

I tried the frozen bottle today with my broody FBCM, she just won't come out of that hot house...but every time I put the bottle by her she switched to another nest

She is being so stubborn, she has not come out to eat at all and won't touch the food I put in there for her. I have gotten her to take some sips of water but not nearly enough.

Sorry birdman about your rabbit, so sad! And Gary losing Cotton is awful

She was so fluffy and pretty.! Sad news guys...hope there are no more losses.
Hi Casa!!

I too have a hen that refuses to leave her nest. Have been giving her scrambled egg with vitamins, and bringing her water. Have actually removed her several times out of the nesting box, as she seems to be getting weak with this heat. Today she wouldn't even eat.

With so much sad news I'm hoping this will lift some spirits.... I just checked my eggs in the inc and I have a peafowl egg that has pipped.

Just wanted to say the hose attachment spraying the ends of the runs has made a huge impact on keeping the chickens cool. They know now that the water spray makes them feel better. They come running from their coops to stand just at the edge of the spray, then lay in the cool, wet dirt.

Okay, enough of me hogging the thread!!

Good luck to everyone and their 'kids'.

So sad for the casualties that have already come from this heat

It's been brutal. I worry about my girls being out there in it, even with all the shade and cover we have. I've got water available at several points in the preserve, but I still see a lot of panting and drooping, spread wings going on. I think I'm going to find our sprayer attachment for the hose and give everyone a shower today. Both my broodies that are setting are in shaded places - one is deep in our ivy, where it stays cooler, and then I've got the other girl in her own carrier in the shade. Both get water, and I'm going to put a frozen water bottle in the carrier today. I just worry about my girlies. Thank goodness the boys have huge combs!

Brian, congrats on getting babies! You are going to love that Dominique. I have a BR/Dominique cross girl and she is very friendly.

Desert, yay for the peafowl pip! I hope you get more.

Cynthia, I keep forgetting to say so, but YES, my little Flekka is the tiny tot I got from you last year

She's a pretty girl. I feel so lucky to have her. And all of the other babies I got from you. I should do a picture update of everyone and tell who/where they came from. I think it would be fun.

Today has been an exciting day! I got my first batch of chicks. I'm very excited to watch them grow up into beautiful girls, and maybe a boy or 2. 1 dominique 3 leghorns 3 buff orpingtons 2 gold sex-links and 2 turkens. Cant be more excited.

Such adorable babies. Glad they made it here okay.

My broody is a tough old bird lol. Its actually not too hot in her box. Not sure why.

I've tried spraying my girls but they hate it. My ducks don't mind though. Maybe the rest of them will start to realize it helps them keep cool.

My sympathies to those who have lost pets :(

Congratulations on the pip! We need to see pictures. :)
