What incubator do you use Casa? I really want to get an incubator, I told my husband its all I want for my birthday/Christmas/whatever else. But I don't need a big one, maybe just to do like 8-12 eggs in. I would love to do it for Ryan's Kindergarten next year, but I would have to do a test batch first. With my luck none would hatch.
And any tips for my coop floor, I'm leaving it dirt. I was going to just through shavings and straw under the roosts, but do you think I should in the whole coop. They love to dust bath in there, so I don't want to cover it up too much, I was thinking I might through in some sand to make it easier to scoop up.
I got the roosts in today. Nest boxes are going in tomorrow, Yippee... My neighbor who should be working on his chicken coop came over to ask for something non-chicken related, and saw that a girl was making a ladder roost, and it really is horrible looking compared to what Mr. Handyman did, so he took the rest of my wood and built the other half. He notched it all out and everything, even cut the ends all nice a pretty. I felt like unscrewing mine, and say here you go Bob, it only took him like 20 minutes to professionally make a 6 foot roost ladder with four 42 inch roosts on it. Which I took over an hour, and mine is nearly not as good as his. I know where my chickens will be sleeping at night. hahahaha

Oh, he is a really pretty color!! probably not a BCM, though, his leg color is wrong and he should not be so mahogany/red, he should be mostly black with copper hackles, with those light legs he might be a wheaten cross or maybe even BTB??Another picture of the rooster.

yay that's awesome! That's a really cute picture! Its adorable to see chicks with their mamas. Hope I get a broody hen so I can experience that
I have an easter egger hen I need to rehome that keeps trying to go broody, I keep having to break her b/c her timing is terrible, but I suspect she might be a decent mama since she keeps trying, lol.. she is a leghorn cross but has a straight comb and lays a large cream egg...

Lisa, that is awesome about the quail. Now you got me thinking about quail. How big the pen? what do they eat? Any special things to know? Do they need a run or is that part of the pen? Hum.......

Sphinx, how are the eggs doing for you? I candled most of the eggs under my broody tonight. I see at least four developing! Really wacky air cells, but I think letting them sit for a couple of extra days really helped.
Karen, I have heard that some people put sand in their run. It works kind of like a giant kitty box, but for the chickens.

I wrangled all eight of my wanderer girls and penned them in the run yesterday. There were not happy with me, but at least I don't have to worry about someone's dog getting them! And, my half-naked BO's feathers are growing back. Yaaaaaay.

Gary--Quail have been really easy--they just need a cage, not so much a run. I will find a pic of my setup, we used a wood frame with chicken wire on it, hardware cloth on the bottom, a droppings tray underneath...hinged lid on top....it is open so that is their "run" to be outside..then made some enclosures on the end for little "coops" that have hinged lids to open. I put the feeder in the enclosed part because then the food does not fall through the wire, they like to dig in it....rabbit bottles for water...the boys can fight so we have a divider in the middle, a boy on each side with two hens on each side, but I am adding two more girls to each side because the boys are very "active" hehe...the girls are going bald on their heads from getting hi-jacked
Here is the cage--I will go get better pics when it is light outside...it is about three feet wide plus the wood boxes, so about 5 feet total maybe? and less than 2 feet deep. We put legs on it...the board on the front down at the bottomis irrelevant, it i just sitting up against the legs to give the chickens shade. I moved the quail cage out of the run this weekend, It worked fine in there but my girls need all the room they can get, so we put the quail under an awning by some lilac bushes for now. I think you would really like them ! They are so fun, we really have liked them much more than we thought we would. And the chicks and eggs seem to sell well. I would be glad to give you some chicks or eggs, just let me know!
