I've never bought my birds grit either. It was my understanding that if chickens have access to dirt outside, they'll eat that as needed and don't need grit. That grit is primarily for birds that are kept in cages and never see the ground.

Silly, that is so scary! I think they're going to continue doing that. I remember when I was in college, the neighbors had a rooster. he would roost about 8' up in a tree, right under my window. He'd start crowing at 5am every morning. LOOOOOOVED that as a college student. I was so excited when his family ate him.

I bought a bag of grit. It has lasted 1.5 year so far and not quite half gone.

so i just had a big scare. my welsummer somehow got her foot stuck in the feeder and was kinda hanging upside down. she is hurt and having issues walking. i just hope i do not have to put her down and no i am too poor to take her to the vet

Just keep her quiet and apart from the rest so she doesn't feel the need to 'run with the pack'. Triage her to see if you need to make a brace.

How old is she?? The younger the better!!

went out and checked on her and she is looking much better she is actually walking normally and running. i think she flew down from the roost and got her foot caught. i just hope my neighbors did not sleep with their window open because as you can imagine the girls were calling for help for their sister. and if they did sleep with their window open i hope they are not upset. they have lived here for less than a year and tho they are nice, it can be hard to fully read people when you have not known them for long. the other neighbors are not as much of a worry.

That is good to hear! I hope the new neighbors don't make a fuss. If they know it was an isolated incident I would think they would be understanding! I am so glad you saved her.

I'm so glad she's ok, Brad. I bet the neighbors didn't mind, especially if it is an isolated incident. My one set of neighbors are SO awesome- when we were out of town, they were woken up by my chickens squawking up a storm. He actually got dressed and took a flashlight out there to see what was wrong. He'd seen skunks in the yard, and was prepared to fight a skunk off of them. As it turned out, everything was fine.

So I'm throwing this out here now. I got my new FBCM from Wendy today, I just love her, she is beautiful, and her travel companion was her hatchmate brother. I can't have roosters, and so until he crows he's safe here, but I wanted to try to find him a NON EATING home before he starts making himself known the the world. Hatched around the first week of June. He's going to be a very Handsome Man!

And how long do you all think will be a good time period to keep them separated. I tried to put them in with the flock. No one picked on the pullet, I think they all thought she was my other Maran. But the poor Roo just got hated on so bad. They are actually in my baby grow out pen, and I put the babies in the Silkie Coop. Sure they aren't too happy being stuck in the coop all day long, they are usually out in the run all day long. But it was a faster solution then running chicken wire everywhere.

I am having quite the luck this year! I went to a podiatrist today thinking that I had a neuroma that would be resolved with a cortisone shot. Turns out I have a stress fracture in both feet. The left one is the bad one. So I have a soft foot cast type thing I have to wear now.

I have one very lonely bresse chick right now. Poor thing.
