Utah!

OMG its cold this morning. I think I need to remember to put the fresh water in the buckets in the afternoon. Way too cold this morning to do that, my fingers were freezing. The girls actually were all still sleeping at 7:30 this morning, and they all just looked at me like get out of the coop, we are sleeping. So its cold for them this morning.

Sheriff is the same as yesterday. She slept in the nest box, and she was there this morning. But she did jump down and crawl out for some grain. I did put the regular food right in front of her and some water and watched her for about 10 minutes. She ate food and drank several times. Then waddled off to the sun spot and laid down. I don't know what to do with her, its depressing looking at her this way. I feel helpless. I'm really thinking of taking her to a Vet. But my husband thinks I'm nuts because she is just a chicken. But your talking to the person who just did $4,000 in knee repairs my Black Labrador. I don't know what they would actually do, and I called Dr. Orr who is my inlaws Parrot Vet. They said that it would be probably $300 plus just to have her looked at, because they will want to do blood work to make sure her levels are fine, and then possible xrays to see if she broke something. They also said if it was levels they would want to have her in their incubator and do IV meds. WTH on a chicken? So I don't even know if its worth the $300 just to see what is wrong.

As far as the other chickens, no one is picking on her. If anything her buddy that came with her and my NN are like looking after her. They both are always resting with her, last night it was driving my FBCM that came with her nuts that she couldn't get in the nest box, she paced and paced and paced along the floor by the box.

Anyone else cold this morning?  I work in a little "security shack" outside of the turkey plant and my DH cleaned out my car the other day and took my jacket out. So here I am, freezing my butt off. Hoping the sun heats this little shack up quickly. :fl

I love the fall. Its probably my favorite time of year. I don't much like the cold of winter though but here it comes. It seems like only yesterday we were asking each other for tips on how to keep our chickies cool now we will be asking about how to keep them warm. What are you guys doing? I'm thinking of getting some heavy duty plastic and covering my run. Also walling in the open side of the coop to keep the draft out. I wonder what my DH will throw together for that one? He doesn't seem to like using screws and nails. He wires things together lol. :barnie As for venting to release moisture what do you do? How big are the vents and do you leave them open all the time? What about feed? Do you change it during the winter or just use the same stuff?  :idunno I just dunno. This will be my first winter trying to care for them. Last winter I wasn't addicted and DH just let them wander the yard. We lost several last winter. I don't want the same thing happening again.

Just have to put this little guy here. :weee  I love him.
This will be my first winter! I have plans to plastic over the run. Will probably staple. Extra bedding, heated waterer, and in haven't gotten past that yet!

I put a heat lamp out in the coop when it gets really cold, plus make sure that my girls' water is actually water and not a block of ice. I like to give them very warm water when I refill their bucket. I also try to feed them foods that will help them to stay warmer, ie corn and cooked oatmeal or cooked rice. They love it, and it's a nice warm treat for them when it's chilly out. I will use the deep litter method in my coop when the weather is really bad, but I prefer to change out the litter once a week. It could just be me, but I feel like nice, clean litter is more pleasant for them to roost in when it's cold.

Got a bunch of our north fence hemmed in with chicken wire today, thanks greatly to my mom's help. We have a chain link fence on that side that the little chicks can run through, and there was even a hole that the mother hen fit past. Eesh! The neighbors like our chickens, but we do have a resident hawk, as well as a gang of magpies that have gone after eggs and chicks before. So, now I need to find a way to fence in our front yard to keep everyone in on that side. Little boogers .........

I think I got a gender confirmation on my turkeys today. One male, one female, just like I thought!

I let one of the roosters out and the poults flushed in the face, but the male was going blue and red. They are getting so pretty with those coal black feathers. I'll try to get a picture up.

Hope everyone is staying warm! I love the cold weather, but this snap caught me off guard.

I thought today was nice. It was in the 70's ...low 70's, but nice to work in. Chilly this morning..and now! It's supposed to get down to 46 tonight. I put my Seramas in the coop, with the heat lamp on. Little stinks, I always have to get them from their favorite spots outside the coop in the run, and put them in the coop, but tonight, heat lamp.

My poor chickens are going to be stuck in the run for a while. My little Missy..Golden Retriever is in heat. I know that we will have crazy dogs coming around soon, and dogs can and will jump a gate as low as ours, so, don't want my chickens attacked while they are looking for my girl. Going to breed her to a Standard size Poodle when she is ready. First time in years I've done this. I usually don't breed, but this combination is so cute, and very popular. The Poodle I have waiting..:) is a very sweetheart of a guy. Such a sweet tempered boy. With her sweet temper, they should make some great pups. Now, to figure out where I'm going to keep mom and pups until they are sold. It will be cold outside. I need a children's swimpool..that's what my daughter used when her golden had her pups years ago. Worked great.

Oh, someday, Cynthia. Someday I may buy a goldendoodle from you. I think my house will explode if I have one more living thing crammed in her. I refuse to even put a pencil sized snake. But I'd love a dog.

You are being stalked. From Google Search. Perhaps others too.

There is good info on this at http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57368016-285/how-to-prevent-google-from-tracking-you/ , including instructions on how to opt out of Google targeted advertising.
Haha. As a business major, I find it sort of nice to have my personal preferences tailored to. I mean, I'd rather see ads for livestock or baby gear rather than things I don't care about! haha.

No way!?? Really? Yeah! Probably! We're jsut right along the canal! Where are you at?
