Does the brooder have enough room that during the heat of the day the chicks can get far away from the heat lamp? And do you know what the temperature is under the lamp in the coldest part of the night?

I went out this morning to check and it was about 100 at 5:30 am directly under the light. Yes, I believe there is enough room to get away from the heat if needed. At the farthest point away from the light, the temperature was about 70 degrees. Will this work? There are only three chicks...

This little white one hatched on day 18! I put them into lock down, went a while later to check the humidity, and heard the peeping..then saw pieces of shells on the matt, then I saw the zipping going on..the others are hatching tonight, and will probably go through tomorrow.


This is a little tiny tot. That head is so high, the feathers haven't even popped up all the way yet.

Ohhh, cute! I love how golden that porcelain one looks.

How's everyone else doing with all of this wet weather? I find it pleasant, but I'm grateful to have a warm, safe home to retreat to when I get too cold.

I think they'll be okay. Just watch them and see how they act. If they're constantly under that light, then they're too cold. I wouldn't leave them alone for too long at a time - just my personal preference. If they never move from under the light, you might want to find somewhere with a more stable temperature to move the brooder. I had some chicks in a plywood tack shed a couple of years back, and they always ever seemed to be under that light. After some insulation and an industrial lamp went into the shed, it was much warmer and they were running all over the place.

Cynthia, those are really nice looking chicks. I wish it wasn't so late in the year or i would take a couple. That one with the really high dome and the dark beak and feet

. is going to turn out really nice. Why do you do this to us so late in the year?

hey red over here at my place has been really wet bit my girls don't seem to mind the wet weather. The other day we had some hail/sleet hit the ground and my chickens were all out chasing the balls once they hit the ground. So funny to watch.

I've had my babies out in the garage and all is well in there. I just make sure my entire garage stays at a comfortable temperature. So far everyone seems to be doung fine I however ki da worry about my little frizzle. She is sooo tiny and those feathers don't do much to keep the heat in.

Cynthia I'm loving your silkies! When you sell some let me know. I would love to buy some from you. The heat lamps I have seem to be working fine now. Ot was just a faulty light bulb. Keep up the great work cynthia!

Lisa I'm so sorry about what you walked out to!! That sounds horrible! Just when you think everything will be ok, madness like that happens. So sorry for your loss! It sucks that its usually your favorite that doesn't seem to make it.

Oh, Lisa, what a horrible thing to walk out to! How old were your teenagers? I don't think anyone could've predicted it was going to go so badly. I'm so sorry.

Cynthia, those babies are sure cute. I can't believe the one hatched at 18 days. CRAZY!

I don't have a garage, so I haven't had to face the brooder in the winter quandary.

Ohhh boy. Cynthia, I have to agree with you! That is one of my favorite ways of eating eggs. I also like scrambled eggs on toast, when I season my eggs.

This place has sure turned into a ghost town lately. What gives? And this isn't the only board I've seen it happen to, either. Is someone kidnapping our beloved chicken folk?
