Utah!

Here she/he is. Are ya sure Lisa? Going to be a great looking boy...or girl. Hoping for a girl of course.

Lights: I have mine turn on at dusk and stay on for 3-4 hours.

I haven't gotten a single egg for almost a week. UGH. I think it's a combination of season change, molting, and the worms (which I'm STILL dealing with).

Lisa, congrats on getting rid of all the extra chickens. Feels good, doesn't it?

I am almost down to my permanent flock. I have 4 fbcm chicks that I'll be ready to sell soon. They are in a separate pen from my creepy crawlie pen, so I haven't had to worry about lice or worms in them. I can't put them with everyone else because of it, and I don't want to move mom back til the situation is under control. They're more than ready to be gone though. And I'm right- 3 pullets and a cockerel, so a great group to sell to someone.

One of my pullets laid her first egg today. I've been watching her closely the past few days because she has been restless and sure enough I heard a new egg song outside. Boy was I excited to see that she laid a nice pretty blue egg:) looks like easter over here.

so far this is what I'm getting minus a cochin egg.

blue egg is next to a silkie egg to show size. Now I think my next chicken to lay will either be my barnevelder, salmon favorelle or my BLRW. I can't wait:) I figured I'd post some pictures to bring some life back to this forum hahaha. Miss you all!!

I so wish you could tell gender with silkies... I only had 3 little nuggets hatched. Sent shells off for DNA sexing. Everyone hope for girls for me!

I also am sending my last boy off to a new home tomorrow. One of my girls started laying... and eggs are fertilized... The other one is doing squats too...so makes it pretty obvious who it is. LOL

good luck! Crossing fingers the are all girls! I've never heard of this eggshell sexing.

I'd never heard of DNA shell sexing either. Looked it up- looks like around $25 each. Yikes. I think I'm too cheap for that!

This beautiful blue egg came from one of the chicks that I hatched from sundance. Remember Lisa..I told you how blue a lot of those eggs were? This girl that laid this egg is a Silki/Ameraucana mix. She's very pretty. Brian, you should post a photo of her. She got a lot bigger than I thought she would. Very pretty girl. You have some nice different colored eggs there. It does look like Easter!

I paid $15/ea through chickgenes. First one was free, so only paid $30. And she gives bulk discounts, too. Worth it to me to not have to wonder for the next 5 months...

Jen, I'm irrepressibly curious. But, the only thing that outweighs my curiosity is my cheapskate nature. I think it's cool that they can tell you that. How did you mark them so you can tell who is who by the time the results come in? And how long does it take?

I gave my chickens wazine yesterday, and I swear they seem perkier already.

Also, I was out visiting with them them a couple days ago, and I can tell that something smallish has been digging under the fence in one spot again. I've repacked the dirt down there a couple times, and every couple weeks, it digs back out again. The hole is small, maybe slightly bigger than a large rat? My lavender ameraucana was found dead, and I'd assumed it was the worms/worming treatment, but maybe it was a critter? I've filled it back in, then put some wood in place with a brick on top. The brick alone hasn't fixed it.
