Uh oh.... I spoke too soon about loosing any chickens. Just lost 4 of my favorites. Boo on this winter and it has only just started.

This cold snap has been hard on a lot of peoples' birds.

Well, I talked to the BF last night, and we are looking into possibly getting an appeal for him. I'm also helping him find and pay for a new attorney that will protect him - we're hoping for one of the advocate for men attorneys. So, we're fighting this, yet. The BF told me more about what went on during the trial, and it was so obviously fixed. I also found a place where I can file a formal complaint against the judge for being so biased. It was just a really raw deal all around.

What a bunch of cuties, Brian. Hope Lucky/Winky keeps doing well. I just hatched 7 more of her siblings. I have found feather sexing works pretty well on these guys. I have 4 girls, 2 boys, and one that is too wet to tell yet.

I have not lost any birds to the weather yet. I have 16 in one coop, 10 in another - with the juvies all in one brooder coop with a light.

IFA did have red bulbs (at least the Riverton store did) when I bought new bulbs this week. I had a bulb burn out in the brooder coop. I came home to find two 6 week old pullets doing their best to cover 7 four week old Delaware chicks. SO cute. Of course the Bresse chicks (the biggest I have right now) kept getting in the way of a picture until most of them had moved around.

Hey do any of you guys "tarp" your runs? I never have before since we don't get much wind where I'm at but I was wondering if most of the Utah group does or not.

Hey do any of you guys "tarp" your runs? I never have before since we don't get much wind where I'm at but I was wondering if most of the Utah group does or not.

I have wrapped plastic sheeting around mine and stapled it on. I liked it. Did not do it this year, I have been stacking straw on the west side this year and last year, keeps the snow (mostly) out of the covered run, and they like to kick around in it. My reason for not doing the plastic again, was when we pulled the staples out in the Spring it was really hard to make sure none got lost on the ground and I had a few hens get bumblefoot from the staples...so I was trying to figure out something different so that more staples would not get in their run....our run is 60+ feet long so it was really tedious pulling all the staples out too.

Hey! That is a really good idea! I might have to try this next year. The straw works ok, but I do think they stay a lot warmer with the plastic. Less dirt kicked out all over the lawn too.
