Utah!

Double post?  On the pictures?  I'm trying to figure out who the rooster is.  Frustrating like nothing other.

So I'm setting up the incubator right now.  I poured water in the water holders in the bottom, and stuck the temp/humidity thing inside, just turned it on.  Do I need to put sponges in the water rings or just water.

That will likely be too much water---it does not take hardly any to get it to 35 :) It takes a while to evaporate, so take the water out, then see where the humidity is at-the wet styrofoam will still have a lot of humidity from where the water was for a day or so, so wait til the humidity starts to drop, then add little bits to get it where you want. As far as the sponge, sometimes it is easier to get the humidity right by adding zero water to the bator, and a small damp sponge. The higher you want the humidity, the bigger the sponge. I cut one into quarters, then add the other pieces for the lockdown to get it up to 60-65 like Cynthia said. Wet globs of paper towel work great too. During lockdown--a helpful hint----put the sponge underneath the vent holes (usually have red plugs in them, take them out) in the top of the bator, then you can use a straw to drop water droplets through the vent holes onto the sponge withoout opening the bator. Sometimes if the humidity won't stay high enough you can plug one vent hole back up, but they need air so not both.

Another way that works for lockdown---chookschick I think is the one that has this incubator cheat sheet with tips--you wad up papertowel and stuff them in the water channels then wet it down, that really get the humidity up and it stays pretty level. I will try to find a link and post it for you.

Yes, like Lisa said, you don't want to fill the wells yet. I don't even fill the wells during lock down, because I don't like the water ruining the bator. I just put in a long dish towel..new..along the back, and a couple of sponges. May need another cloth in there..and yes, under the vent holes. Guess we can help you out at that point..three weeks away...have fun with the waiting period. If the eggs are light colored, you could candle at day three or four and see if you have any veining started. That's always fun.

We I took out all the water. The humidity is still at 50%. I had it at 99.9 on the temp that came with it, but then the digital one says 99. I have the digital one dead center in the middle, and the other one that came with it, is on the side left.

Where is the best place to have the temp gauges?

I just usually put mine on the side..either side.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I need to go check on it again. I haven't looked at it for a few hours. Been putting Christmas stuff away. I also took both red plugs out, at least that is what that thread said to do that Lisa posted, and then when the eggs go back in I can plug them up to bring the temp back up faster. Then I can take them back out to leave more air circulation. Anyone know if this is good?

Karen, i have some eggs for you to try out. Don't know what is fertile but i figure if you try enough you will get at least 1 or 2 chicks. send me a pm and i could bring them to you tomorrow. I could help you with the mystery rooster to.

Sweet, you don't have to come all the way out to Cedar Hills, I can meet you, or come to you. I just really thankful for some other eggs, because I'm still dumbfounded that I have fertile eggs. I sat outside and watched them for over an hour today. And no one was jumping on anyone. Tonight when they were all in the coop, I walked in and checked everyone for spurs, everyone has just normal bumps.

A few people on my who is my rooster thread thinks is a Silkie. But I just don't see it. And I will literally cry if it really is. I don't want to part with one of those. So I told them both today, they are way over due for laying me an egg, and to get busy already. lol

Happy New Years!

Hope everyone has a great night, and be safe.

My resolution….This year I'm going attempt to hatch some eggs. :D The incubator is at 14% humidity, and at 100.2 for the last 3 hours. If its the same tomorrow, I think we will be ready to add the eggs tomorrow night.
