Utah!

My Seramas were so happy today. They were let our of the coop to play in the sun. They were so happy. They took a long dirt bath and strutted around the yard very happy. I was glad for the sun as well

They have one

well darn it you may need to keep them locked up for a bit. Did they disappear from the yard or the coop

So we talked with the neighbors immediately bordering our property and who we share fence line with. 4 of the 5 told us they don't care and thought it was odd that we asked although the newest neighbor who's only been here a few months said he thought it was nice and we were only the 2nd neighbors he'd met.

The 5th has 2 terriers that come out in the yard and she was concerned the chickens would be loose and her dogs would dig under the fence. Also concerned the chickens would smell. My husband assured her that we would keep the coop clean and smell-free and that they wouldn't be loose unless we were out with them. He's also planning to dig down and pour a 3 or 4 inch concrete mowing strip along the fence line anyway but didn't tell her that.

A potential drawback is one of the backyard neighbors said the guy across the street from him had some silkies in his backyard and someone turned him in. So we introduced ourselves to him and got his story. He said the warning came in the mail and he doesn't know who turned him in but suspects it was 1 of 2 neighbors on his street so to beware.

We're thinking we'll insulate the coop walls to keep any potential noise down and keep sand and dirt in the run. Any other thoughts/suggestions?

Wow, sorry that your neighbors are iffy. My girls are so loud that you could probably hear them down 2 streets. Specially my Japanese Bantam, you think someone was killing her for hours after she lays an egg, and usually this gets the rest of them all singing the egg song as well. I give my neighbor that lives right behind us eggs all the time to keep them happy, they are the only ones I could see really complaining, at least twice a week her basket is over the fence. But we are allowed chickens, as long as they are kept in a coop, and in a fenced back yard. But they do state that if they are excessively noisy you could have to get rid of them. So far so good, and I have some really loud girls.

Good luck!

Silly, lol..I keep reading about that Japanese little stinker. You keep her anyway. She must have grown on you. :)

Yes that JB is a little stinker alright. I just hope she chooses to stay around, now since its has been warm the last few days, she's back up in the pine tree, but she hasn't been sleeping up their yet, just during the day, and I did catch her walking along the back wooden fence last week. As long as she doesn't jump the fence to the north of us, she is usually fine. Little stinker.

What are little stinks right now are the Cochin Bantam and the 2 Silkies. Ever since I started putting the babies outside all day long (I actually forgot about them last night till about 11pm, they were all huddled on the coop door, but they were fine) They hang out with them all day long. They sit there and talk to them and everything, like they are their mommas. My Partridge bantam is the worse, she even tries chasing me away from them. Haha With my luck all of them will go Broody this summer.

Cynthia, I saw your brooder on the brooder contest tread! That is awesome. Beats my now dog crate, which I'm going to be done using here once I get my chicken wire on the shipping crate that I just bought for a brooder for the garage for the Hatch along chicks.

You should really make them and sell them, I bet people would buy them up. :D I posted my shipping crate brooder for the older babies, and I had about 5 or so people PM me asking where they could get shipping crates like that, so crazy. But they really are super easy. It took me all of 5 minutes to cut out the door for the one I just made for the 6 week old babies to go outside. I still need to get the door on there, so I can lock them in. Maybe that will be this week project. They seemed fine last night, and I guess all boxed in they should be warm right? They are for the most part fully feathered now.
