Utah!

Nope I have a Girl Scout parade in the morning, and I wont be to there till around 3-3:30. It's really okay, I can get some hatched chicks from her

Okay, I can also just leave them with my inlaws and you can grab them from their place in South Ogden (Uintah).

I had a lesson on colors in California. In Seramas blue and black look the same. The difference is that black has a shine to it like the greens or purples theb lues are dull with no shine. Wonder if that works with other breeds that black and blue are so close

I have had that happen once.  No a silkie but a DUncle   very sad.  I never let her sit again.

Yup, hens can be cannibalistic. Especially if they don't feel like the chicks are theirs, and once one of them draws blood, they will all go nuts. Too bad. Birds can be so dumb.

I had similar thing happen to me last year had 4 Bantam welsummer hens all sitting on same nest and when a chick would hatch one of them would peck it death.

Glad to hear I am not the only one, I have been feeling like an awful chicken grandma all day. Wish I would have been able to save the babies! Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge of this phenomena....I don't feel so awful now :)

I have heard that its not good to have too many hens sitting together. When they hatch they don't recognize babies as their own. In the future I would let them sit by them selves only and you should not have that problem I am so sorry

This is exactly what I was going to say. I've heard the same. They start fighting over who gets who, and the baby chicks get pecked at, once there is blood, that's pretty much all she wrote. Sorry Lisa. :/

Well, the first eggs I got from Diana are starting to pip. One is pipped under the mom. She got up today. What? Doesn't she know she is on lock down? I picked up the egg..heard chirping..and, chirping in the other two, just not pipped. She did her big poo thing. Maybe she knows it's close. I have pipped in the bator..a small white egg.
Has anyone else see the mom get up when they are pipping? Will have to watch tomorrow. If mine in the bator has hatched. I may sneak it out to her, and bring in the other if it hasn't yet. If these eggs under her hatch fine, I am going to wonder once again, what is the big deal about opening the bator when in lock down. ??

I went and watched my like a hawk, and my stupid Silkie did get up a few times to run for water or food while they were pipped. The Cochin I don't think moved for 2 days, I took her cold watermelon a few times.

So glad my 2 girls didn't fight over the babies, I would really say the Cochin is mom, and the Silkie just follows them around. So far so good. Not sure what the Silkie will do if I did take her out.

when my hens are sitting they don't move. As the chicks start to cheep the moms cheep back and do not move. I learned a hard lesson last week while I was in california. I had 4 chicks hatch early. Theywere due on Thursday and hatched on Monday night. My house sitter quickly removed them and put them in the brooder. When I got hom on Wednesday night. I had 4 more eggs that had pipped and died. I suspect the bator was open too long. On a happy note. I candeled the eggs under my Serama eggs. They were shipped eggs. They are all started. I put 6 under her and 6 in the bator. Hope they all hatch
