Utah!

The nest boxes are open for business!!!! :D I can't wait for my girls to start laying! (I hope they'll figure out to go into the nest boxes for laying.... I need to find some dummy eggs to put in there)

Well, this morning I let Rooster Cogburn in with the rest of the flock. I was prepared, in as I had on a long sleeve shirt, leather gloves and a big fish net from the pond. So, I set him down and it only took 3 seconds, hackles went up on the previous alpha chicken and RC. They both jumped into the air and hit one another with a thud, that was it. RC is the new head bird at my place. I was not sure just what to expect, and tried to be prepared for the worst, but it did not seem to happen. I sat and watched the birds a lot today. I wanted and or needed to ensure that things would be ok, with everyone.

I kept the birds all locked up in the old coop today, to try and 'home' RC. I suppose on the morrow, I will let them out and back to free ranging. I am delighted to have made the transition of my new rooster, to the man in charge. I think he will be just what the doctor ordered… I heard RC utter a low guttural sound, as he was taking charge of his new flock. Almost something like a dog would or could make. Every one in the coop knew that the new rooster was in charge. Anyone here with experience, regarding this new sound I was listening to, coming from RC.

So I am delighted with my new bird, and I was able to get everyone in the same coop, cage free, within a week. I learn from the birds every day it would seem.

Thanks folks,

RJ

I remember when she hatched those! I was sooo tempted. Pretty Birds. I love Rocks, so it would be fun to have this color someday. Sounds like a big girl! Do you have a roo/are you giving her eggs to hatch?
i do not have a roo. and i am not looking to give her eggs right now. i am glad i snagged her. she is such a good girl. she is so fluffy. her actual body is not huge but she has so many feathers that she could cover a lot of eggs and keep them warm and such. and she is not a girl you can take eggs from unless you want to bleed a lot

Iluv i thought that partridge looked like mine. She is looking cute. I was going to keep her but i love to share with my BYC friends. She came from my white pullet. I wonder how the blue roo i had is looking i sold to a lady in Mt Pleasant. I wasn't home when she came to get them, to bad cause i would have told her about BYC. I set 7 splash Silkie eggs a couple days ago, hope they all hatch.

Just got home from Colorado, and my girls did awesome while I was gone, except I'm missing a baby chick

There was 4 when I left, and now I only have 3 happy healthy chicks. Wondering if some large bird got it.

On another note... I guess I need some fertile eggs for my other Silkie, I was hoping to come home and she would have quit sitting. Its been over a month now of her sitting, and she is still sitting. Anyone have 4-6 eggs I can buy to give her. I will be going to Draper and then the North Salt Lake in the morning to pick up the dogs from boarding, and the puppy sitter, so I can pick up eggs in Salt Lake tomorrow morning if anyone has anything. If not I will try KSL.

Hope everyone had a great 4th, we went to Colorado for a family reunion, and it was so nice to be up in the high mountains. It rained everyday for a few minutes to an hour, and was never above 85.

Hi Karen, i have two Splash Silkie eggs for you. I might get 1 more tomorrow. My white Silkie is laying eggs again but i don't know if her eggs are fertile since she hangs out with the chicks and the frizzle hen. Ratchet don't get to close to hens with chicks.

Sweet! Even just 2 would be great! I can come by whenever tomorrow.

Oh and I forgot to add, hilarious!...I gave the girls free range of the whole yard, something they only get for about 3-4 hours a day, since they share it with the dogs. But they had the whole yard to themselves for the entire week. So my neighbor was coming over and giving them food, water, and collecting eggs. His mother called me about 3 days into watching them saying they lost a chicken (not the baby chick) but my large EE chicken. They looked and looked. They said they thought she was missing for 2 days. So oh well, I wasn't mad, I do live up on the hill by AF Canyon, we have all kinds of large birds that fly in our pine trees. But the next day, my mother inlaw came over to check on the cat and bird, and she opened the door and found the chicken in the house flying around in the house. The stupid thing came in through the dog door. She said it scared the crap out of her so bad, she needed to have my nephew come catch it. Hahaha! We had eggs in the hallway. Good thing for hardwood floors.
