Utah!

Sundance sorry to hear about you hen. I have stepped on a chick before and killed it. I used to have a LF RIR rooster and he hated my Chihuahua. He would attack him as i he were trying to kill him. It got to the point my dog wouldn't even go outside, we had to pick him up and carry him out. Because of this i had to re home him. To bad really because other then that he was really nice and would even let you pick him up.

On a good note all 7 splash silkie eggs in my incubator is doing great. Today is day sixteen. Just in time to because my frizzle is layin again.I caught her in with the broody hens this morning. I keep checking until she got out and sure enuogh there was an extra unmarked egg under the silke's. Now that i know what they look like im going to start collecting.

My cuckoo maran laid her first egg! Hip hip hurray!

We finally got our first house and can now have our chickens at our place, instead of having them 35 minutes away. We are mostly settled and now it is time to move the birds.

What is the easiest way to move a flock? Both pens and coop need to be moved, along with 20 birds.

I heard the egg song coming from the coop today, but no egg. Does anyone know how long after they start to sing that they lay their first egg?

Today is the day our little town does the 24th of July celebration, so besides Saturday it is an extra holiday. I took the day off from my usual chores, and decided to change my Bantys to nipple waterers. Cleaned out the brooder, removed the old quail water font and cleaned up the feeders. Pressed each nipple to display a water drop, and waited, pretty soon I had one, then three and then the whole clutch went for a drink. I don't know why I bother to worry about birds, they always seem to do fine without my concern.

So here is a shot of the inaugural plunge…

This brooder setup is on the floor of my wood shop and is 8' by 6' or so. That is my electric hen in the corner. They will be three weeks old on Monday and thus far all has gone well.

Hope everyone has had a nice and safe summer weekend.

The family is over this evening, fireworks around ten. Corn on the cob from Tremonton is the order of the day. And surprise, the lovely wife shared an ear or two with the birds. Here we see RC and some of his ladies enjoying a fresh picked ear… birds are just so much fun.

The hens will be sixteen weeks next week, some of the combs are starting to fill out and that lovely ruby red color is creeping into them. I suppose I will be hearing the egg song before long. Better get the nesting box put together, perhaps on the morrow, or Monday.

Summer time is special with grandkids,

I actually saw someone put the coop onto a flatbed, with the chickens in it (with the run and all) and actually, they kept it on the flatbed for a couple of weeks before they moved it from the place I saw it..... not sure if that's the easiest way to move them.... but I guess you could go about borrowing some large dog kennels/crates, and putting a bunch in those....

oooh nice

Thanks! It's always nice to find a new egg after five or six months of waiting!

I'm curious to know too.... what about 'the squat' anyone know how long from when they start the squat?

My grandpa says to feel the bum bones beneath all the fluff. If you can only fit one finger between the pelvic bone, they aren't ready to lay, two fingers wide means it should be really soon!
