Utah!

Hmm... well I googled Northern Fowl mites and Chicken lice both, looked through the images, each category has varying pics you can find some under each that look just like this and some that are totally different (black bugs, red bugs, brown bugs galore!) I could not tell you if the same bugs I had are what you have, it seemed like the ones I saw last year were a little smaller. Once I treated them they cleared right up though, so hopefully yours will do the same!

I think either way you treat it the same, it is not going to matter so much exactly which bug it is, so I would go ahead with one of the treatments to at least to get those bugs the heck outta there before your whole flock gets infested. So frustrating I am sure....good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I wish we lived closer, I would love to help you! Just be careful, don't touch any of the chemicals and put your health/baby in danger!

SpeckledHills are you lurking around? You should check these pics out, maybe you know what they are for sure? (Briana, you could pm her and ask, she knows a whole lot about chickens and all that can ail them.)

She is still alive this morning but still doesent look good..I took a video of how she is acting... and a couple pics of the bugs I see on her. She wont try to eat or drink on her own.

don't forget to put sugar in her water that you are giving her it sill give her the energy she needs to eat and drink on her own. put her in a brooder under lighs to help her

As best as I can describe it, the Cache County fair poultry building is run by gross incompetents. I brought RC home today, he was hungry and very thirsty. They are little better than a sham on the community at large. I am not buying into it. I shared my thoughts… perhaps not my best moment, but at times one just needs to take a stand, some things though laughable are not to be laughed at or of.

Iluv, I'm still banking on lice. I have experience with them, unfortunately, and Silkies are really susceptible to problems with them. Do you see any nits on the base of her feathers? They look like little grainy white clumps. She definitely needs those off of her. I had a girl that had them so bad, I was shocked. I put a towel on my lap, poured some cooking oil in a dish, then sat down with her and kept dipping my fingers it the oil until I had her as greasy as a French fry in the bottom of the basket :) she relaxed after a few minutes, and I think she realized I was helping her. She smelled like rancid oil for a couple of days, but it helped so much. Just be careful around the eyes and nose.

I'd advise keeping your hands and forearms well oiled, if you do this. It helps kill any of the little creeps that abandon ship.

RJ, so sorry :( I hope Cogburn is ok. I'm afraid to enter my birds at a fair because of the conditions. I worry enough about my babies just when they're in my back yard.

Thank you, I'll calm down in a bit, I'm sure. Yes I may have learned my lesson on the fairs. I have to question the danger to the birds, of the way they handle them when you don't or can't see. I don't understand their lack of interest in caring for them, they should be chicken people and know better. BUT that may be just the problem.

Anyway Lisa, how did you find your birds this afternoon?

Best to all and their birds,

RJ

Edit: Thanks bitsyhorse !

I went to the fair today and saw Lisa's birds and RC. I think your fury is founded RJ. I walked past the rabbit cages and I watched one take its last breath. They hadn't bothered to put a water line to it's cage. When I walked over and mentioned it to the man sitting at the desk, he scowled at me and shooed me away saying he'd check on it. LAZY BUM!! It made me quite angry. Someone is going to be awfully sad tonight when they find that their precious baby died. I really love Box Elder's fair. Their poultry building has air conditioning. I grew up in Cache Valley and should have my allegiance there but I can't help but think the animals are better cared for at the BE fair.

RJ- Your RC was the most beautiful there!!

Lisa- I had to go and find Ernie he has the sweetest little eyes. I also got a kick out of your showgirl! Such cuties!!

Ok, I am still catching up, but stopping here. Maybe someone has already said something. I saw that 7 was mentioned..love it for the body, but the head wouldn't be a great idea. I am guessing this is the very reason why this bird isn't feeling well. Use oil. Good ol cooking oil. Oil that babys head good. Careful around the eyes, but go all the way down the front and back of the neck. They are eating her alive! The oil works quick! You should probably do the body with the 7. Don't even try DE. Doesn't work.
