Hey Karen you could give her 4 bantam or 3 LF. Even if all hatch she could keep them warm in the cold. Just dont let them have acsess the snow (fast killer). The begining os October is not cold. The beginning of January is cold. Lost a little one during this time but have also had broody's raise several in 15/20 degree night time temps and 30/40 day time temps. My little a-frame is perfct for winter hatcherey but can be a killer during the sring, summer and fall temps The problem with Silkies is that they are very persistinat. I have had one sitt in the nest box for 2-1/2 month hatch some chicks and was broody 5 weeks latter. She is now raiseing some Silkie chicks.Silkie chicks for sale!!!

I noticed how persistant she is, I'm hoping the Cochin doesn't fall in her foot steps. I guess we could try. I can lock them 100% up in the shipping crate coop too when it snows, so they can't go outside at all, but we really dont' get that much snow out there under that huge pine tree. And I can always rig something up in the garage. I just worry that they will get too cold.

Gary, I feed my birds on a lot of falling/rotting fruit this time of year. So if you are a bad flock master, then I guess I am, too. It seems a waste to let all of that food just rot, even if it does help fertilize the ground. I also toss my flock the fruit scraps when I'm canning, so they get plenty of forage this time of year.

So my turkey hen and her black Wyandotte buddy are STILL sitting. I think they've designated themselves as living monuments to hatching. Anyway, last night I dreamed that one of them hatched a duckling that was as big as a chicken, haha! I was like, "I didn't know I had duck eggs under them!"

Yes, I have a baby of your blue frizzle. Can you tell me what breed he is? I got him from Sundance and the mom is BCWP. I'd like to give him up as my little blind cochin is a roo and I'm thinking the roo-ness will start kicking in soon and will terrify the blind guy.

Would this roo be good for a breeding program or pot? *gulp*

I tried texting her yesterday and asked if she had any left. A while later, she said yes, so I asked how old they were, and a little while after that, she told me they just sold. Ummm, ok? So anyway, I don't think she has any poults left But thank you for offering I don't know if she's just really busy or what. I'll try her again today and see if she will have any in the near future.

He is a frizzled Silkie. He has made really cute babies, the only drawback is his toes are not proper so some of the offspring has funky toes. He is super super cute though and fluffy. Yours would then be 1/2 Silkie and 1/2 Polish. Does he look more polish or more Silkie?

Red I might know some one that might have fertile turkey eggs in Bluffdale, I can find out tomorrow. I know they had turkey poults over the summer, the momma hatched them out. I can find out, not sure if they still have their tom or not. But I know they still have the 2 girls.

Speaking of girls. I just want to cry.... So I go out this morning about 7:30 to let everyone out to free range in the grassy yard. Everyone but the Broody Silkie and the Cochin Bantam come running out. So I was like that's odd Baby which is going on 3 months is not with momma. So I went in the coop to grab the Broody Silkie to kick her out into the grass, and low and behold the stupid Cochin Mix is in the same box, practically sitting on top of her. So I grab them both, out to the middle of the yard they both went, and it was like a mad dash between the 2 of them to get back to the favorite nest box spot. They are both still sitting in there and here it is after 1:30pm. I'm going to literally cry if they both decided to go Broody again! I might have to get some eggs after all, I can't have 2 of them sitting there like little turd buckets.

You need nest box curtains! When you have a broody, you close the curtain so other chickens can't see the broody hen. Broodiness begets broodiness! If they can't see a broody, its a less chance they will go broody by seeing another broody. (Just something I read up on when I was thinking of making neat box curtains)

Silly, it seems like I always have at least a couple broodies doing this......four right now....I never give them eggs, I just ignore them until they stop, usually a few weeks. It deters the others from laying a little, so it is definitely annoying, but if I can't break them I just let them do their thing. They sit and pout and grumble, and then they finally get sick of it...they do lose a little weight but seem to fatten back up just fine. With the weather getting cooler I am not worrying as much, the house is not as hot inside. If you really do not want to give them eggs I would not worry too much....but if you do, well then don't tell your DH I said any of this haha i have a blue hen that has been broody off and on all summer, I wonder if she will ever give up. The others seem to stop and stay normal in between.
