Utah!

I have a kinda dumb question. Do my chickens need anything besides lay mash? Do they need/benefit from scratch grains to? I have a little roo in with my hens to. Is he fine on lay mash to since he's in living with them, so I cant really seperate the foods. I also havent been giving any grit of any kind because they have a decent sized run with tons of tiny rocks and whatever else they feel like eating it in. Those who are laying have strong eggs with hard shells so I figure they are probably getting what they need. Am I missing anything as far as diet or does it sound like they have everything that they need just fine?

Thanks to Amanda I now have a beautiful breeding pair of paint silkies! I am still hatching my own to get more to add to the group but these two will help get me started. She looks gorgeous! The younger one is my roo who is still growing so his spots will probably deepen also. I bet they will make some beautiful babies! I will start breeding and selling next spring. Just wanted to share pics of this lovely pair :)

The Roo- Still young (15weeks) So he's going to fill out more.

The pretty pullet-

i like to offer oyster shell and grit free choice just in case they need it. i just use some 3lb feeders. when the ground freezes it can be hard for them to find grit naturally. as for scratch it can be a nice treat for them. my main feed is whole grains so i use that as scratch too. i also use scratch to get them to mix the floor of the coop up so less work for me. and plus it gives them something to do.

His little dog was almost as happy as we were to see him..and it looks like Austin is happy too! It was a fun day for sure..still is! I get a hug pretty often~!

Oh Cynthia!!!!!!!!

Such precious moments captured there. I love the look of joy on all your cute faces. Sooo happy he is back home safe and with his family :love

I bet you are so crazy proud of this young man! Thanks for sharing!

Cynthia, his name is Doll. pretty sure that's not the right spelling but that is how it sounds. He says he lives across from the covered bridge up one of those draws.

I bought 12 Corturnix today, 5 hens and 2 roos. They are 7 weeks old. I think I'm going to give breeding them for meat a try and see how it works. I need a bigger incubator to get what i need to make it worth breeding them. I'm thinking about 30-40 quail a month to eat for my family of 10. ( my oldest daughter moved back in and my girlfriends oldest son is gong to be staying with us until he turns 18 in may). We are hoping to move of the grid (not everyone is as thrilled about this as me) this spring and i need to find ways to help with our food needs. I don't want to be completely off just enough that i don't have to pay for power, heat, and food.
