Utah!

Hello, I was looking to purchase some new baby chicks in the Spring. Around March or April. I live in Salt Lake city and go to the IFA at 2100 S. Does anyone have bad reviews with the chicks there? I also wanted to know if they had Silkies and Buff Orpingtons. I am going for more docile breeds. Thanks!

Hi! Most ppl on here prefer buying through breeders because you'll get better quality birds but I have bought a few from the ifa and they make sweet pets. I have one silkie I got from there and her quality isent as nice but she's adorable and I love her. Thats pretty typical of large chain hatcheries. But the breeders on here buy eggs from out of state from other breeders of nice quality birds. Quite a few of us on here are silkie lovers :)

March is way to late to get chicks. I have found that the best ones at IFA are the first couple orders that they get, usually mid feburaury. But I have Silkies all the time for sale.

I echo what everyone else says. It is much more fun to get interesting chicks from people on this thread. I will have some awesome cross breeds as well if you are interested! Welcome and feel free to join in even though you don't have chicks yet! This is the best way to prepare!

I agree. Here in Logan, the week before St patrick's Day was the last week a lot of the more unique breeds were ordered in. I never saw some of them again after that at the IFA here.

FYI.....I will have Olive Eggers and Marans. If my rooster starts getting busy again here soon :p I am also trying to get some SBELs from Idaho to hatch in a month or so, I need to get ahold of Birdguy.

Oh thank you! I am certainly going to buy from people on this thread... Acemario, thank you! I actually have three chickens. 2 pullets and 1 roo. But they certainly don't like me.. And they are very noisy.

I will totally be buying silkies and buff orps. Maybe salmon faverolles too! I will ask on this thread once I am able to buy some.

One more question: does anyone have tips for raising docile and sweet chickens? As I was saying I have 3 chicks that I hatched. I don't know why but they are very mean and aloof. The chicks I hatched and raised before them were very sweet. Maybe I did something differently? Is there any ways to have nice and sweet birds?

Thanks to everyone for giving me good info. I will certainly be coming back for chickens from the people on here! I live in SLC.

It seems like the chicks I have raised longer in my garage brooders are sweeter...the earlier they go outside the less they interact with the humans and they become less friendly. The longer they are being babied the more they seem to like the people. Just something I have noticed. Along with more chicken dust and bad smells in the garage.....I don't know if it is worth it haha :D
