Utah!

Thank you Cynthia. A bit of a surprise for us, she was hiding up there longer than we knew of. I suppose it is all good. The chick is very cute… if I do say so myself. Don't you have new chicks in the last few days as well? A fun time for sure.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

Congratulations, RJ! (And Ginger!) I am officially jealous. My Icelandics are supposed to be prone to broody-ness like that, but I must put off anti brooding vibes. My oldest hens are at least two years old now. Not. A. Single. Broody. Not once. I've only had my mixes go broody.

I had a very startling realization today. If my current batch of eggs make it okay, I will have chicks hatching on my and DH's anniversary. Oops.

hmmm hatching on your anniversary could mean your chickens are giving you and your husband anniversary gifts lol

Birdman, that's a good way to look at it :) What an awesome present!

RJ, I just thought of something: How on earth is Ginger going to get her babies down from that height?? Silly girl.

Okay, for those of you who have purchased rooster collars, I know this has been addressed before, but where did you buy the collars? I have three out of four boys who are dumber than a bag of rocks and crow at all hours of the night. I need to try and quiet them down, because I'm sure it's a nuisance to our neighbors. Short of getting rid of my boys, I'm not sure what else to do.

I swear by my collar. I live less than 10 feet from my neighbors and they had no idea we had a rooster. I made mine sine I'm so cheap. I just googled it ans I made mine out of a Velcro cable tie. I really reccammend it.

Morning Red, yes a fretful night for me. I 'hope' that my thinking is correct on this. It is too cold for the chick to come out from under Ginger for the time being. That she finishes her hatch today, sometime. It is too dark to trouble her and them for at least an hour or so… But I suppose I will have to make a decision pretty soon this a.m. I will get them down this morning, but what to do with her and or them. I don't think I want to let her try to raise them with the flock at present. So I will need to put up some type of mother hen pen to protect the chicks. Do you 'Sages' have suggestions for me. I am sort of in new territory for me… not sure I am aware of all of my options. I am not prepared for the blessed event, I thought her 'silly' to try such an event at such a young age. I was only humoring her by letting her sit.

So, if looking at my predicament from afar, any of you kind folks have a management suggestion for me, I would love to hear them. As, Red has noted above I need to get them down this morning.

Thanks all,

RJ

RJ, I have had a girl that went broody in an inconvenient place. I tucked her and her eggs into a carrier, then moved her to a quiet, private place until they hatched. It's much easier to do at night, though, when the hen can't see and will be more likely to stay sitting on her eggs. You could try putting a blanket or towel over the carrier to keep it dark?

I should have suggested that earlier. Sorry.
