@sideWing
 and anyone else who knows. I have been wondering if you could use the same incubator for both reptile and bird eggs? I am not able to go into hatching eggs yet, but soon, soon I will (may be 5-10 years down the road) I have just been wondering about it. Thanks!

Yes! I converted my old leopard gecko incubator into a chicken incubator. All you have to do is close up the vents and make sure the humidity is correct. But yes I use it for both. I think a lot of people use the hovabator to hatch ball python and gecko eggs.

This post made me giggle considering your username lol :D

:)

Thanks for the replies everyone! I will keep that in mind. I love reptiles and amphibians, not to mention chickens. I hope to get a career that will allow me to work closely with reptiles/amphibians. (I really want to be a herpetologist). Thanks again!
Last night we drove a total of 3 hours to Saratoga to pick up a little goat since it is bad to keep only one goat since they are herd animals. So we got him a friend. They have been having fun all morning playing and head butting. I am glad to see them get along.

Ok everyone, first sorry in advance for the long post...... have 4 chickens from last year and 4 new from this year. The newbies are 4 mos + and I FINALLY have them all in the coop and run together without the head hen (a ornery little Production Red) trying to murder the Brahma cockerel. Now my only challenge is bedtime. I have a smallish coop (4x8) with 2 roosts running lengthwise,,,so 16 feet of roost space that is all at the same height. This is run along the back of the coop over a poop board that allows them to walk under the poop board. then there is about 18 inch of open space in front of the poop board and the egg boxes sit on the front.
So right now I have to supervise bed time each night and wait for them all to get on the roost and I have a square garbage can set between the two sets of chickens because if not the big girls grab mouth fulls of feathers from the littles till they run them off the roost entirely. Once they are up there right now I just herd them to their respective sides and then all is peaceful for the night. I was hoping I could eventually take down the garbage can and they would be used to each other enough to just bully them to the far end and be happy but it is looking like that may take forever, and I have to come up with another solution as I am leaving town in a couple weeks for over a week and don't want the chicken sitter to have to deal. I am thinking I will turn the roosts the other way so that there is one set perpendicular to the egg boxes on each side of the coop with the man door space separating them. If they generally get along during the day now (though the littles are skittish and run from the reds with just a sideways glance) does that sound like enough space between to make them comfortable leaving them on the opposite roost? Does it work better to do roosts that are different heights so that the littles get relegated to the lower roosts and that makes the older one content? Even my Buffs are mean to them at night and they have been really accepting of them right from the first day with only the reasonable setting of pecking order stuff and yet still they refuse to have them on the roost without the barrier. One of the reasons I got more chickens was so there were more bodies in the coop during the winter to keep eachother warm so this solution kind of blows that but I need peace in my house.

if it's only one or two chickens, I have had luck separating the bully for a day from the group (isolation/broody pen/dog kennel/crate) and letting the rest of the flock run together.... when introducing the bully back, sometimes that shakes things up enough that they are a bit more calm. I had a problem with a 2 (ish) mo old silkie when I brought her into my flock, she would just bully the other littles, and just be absolutely fierce. I went and put her in a broody cage for a few hours, and she was good enough to put her back in. But then I introduced yet another young one, and she took to pecking her like crazy... so again, I took her out, put her in a timeout overnight, and by the next day, she was much more calm.

as for the roosting situation... I'm not entirely sure :\ my guess would be lower one of the roost bars... maybe they won't feel so crowded at the top level?

So frustrated I could cry. Lost all the baby turkeys and one hen. I just found the last baby in the duck pond but I don't think it drowned. Suffice it to say that it's death was gruesome and it looks like a human did it. I don't know what is wrong with people! And I have no idea who is doing this. I am so sick of Tooele.

Yeah the head hen has been in solitary for over a week before we could finally get her back in with everyone with occasional visitation in the coop by being in a dog crate for a few hours at a time. It is just bedtime now and really all 4 big girls are guilty.I reconfigured the roost to give a little more space...we shall see.

That is terrible! How accessible is your property? I am so sorry that you have problems out there, I have always liked Tooele.

so sorry! :( that is terrible!! have you filed a police report? maybe look into getting an inexpensive security cam?

No police report because I can't prove it was people and we can't afford a security cam. We can't even afford a fence to keep dogs and people off our property. We are right in the middle of the city. I am seriously tempted to just stop growing anything and stop having animals because I'm so tired of things getting killed or disappearing or being broken and stepped on and uprooted and knocked over and ruined. And I'm sure everyone here things I'm just some whiny person that can't take care of their stuff. So you guys just may not see me for a while because I'm tired of bothering people here. So thanks for all the support from everyone and good luck in your endeavors.

I don't think anyone on here thinks that.... we are a community, and we support each other.
