Utah!

Hi everyone! I didn't even know there was this group here :) Any duck lovers here? I have 6 lovely ducks in the South end of the Valley. We have so many chickens in our neighborhood, but no ducks except mine! I would love to add a couple of chickens some day, but right now we have more duck eggs than we can eat. I just checked this morning, and I have a stockpile of 9 dozen in my fridge right now! Here is my little duck family -

Lucky duck! haha. Duck eggs are awesome to bake with!
Pretty birds you've got there!

And welcome to our Utah thread..where are you? I'm in Spanish Fork. Those ducks are pretty. I can't say that I have eaten a duck egg like a chicken egg. I've eaten duck egg at a restaurant I worked at before. Do you let your ducks stay out all day?

Welcome jducour! I have had ducks and they are fun for sure.

Not sure how many here have ducks, but there are a few.

Before I got my pop door finished on my older/big coop I just left the man door open about eight inches, Enough so the birds could come and go as they wished, seems the magpies noticed the door 'ajar' and they would sneak into the coop and help themselves to the eggs in the nests. Not what I had in mind… so the missing pop door was reprioritized to the top of the list. The black and white intruders have not, as of yet, been brave enough to enter the coop through the pop door. But I am still watching!

Sidewing's advice a page or two back, regarding what happens in ones back yard, should stay in the backyard is quite sound. Kind of like the Las Vegas slogan…

AND does anyone here have Modern Game birds? I am looking into their needs for the upcoming winter. The DW seems to favor them, but it is up to me to house and ensure the survivability of said birds.

On a brighter note, here is a photograph of my new OEGB SDW rooster out for a stroll this a.m.

Best to all and your birds,

WELCOME! Im so glad you are here. Those look like very happy ducks ;-)
We duck ppl are certainly in the minority in here. I have learned Chicken ppl are pretty freaking great too, so that's nice.
I have a small mixed flock of 9. 7 girls and 2 rascal drakes. This is all their first year. one is an April Baby, the others are March. They are finally all laying so I get up to 7 eggs a day. I have learned how to dehydrate them (mixed results) and I have been selling them on KSL with great success. If you have extra, you may want to consider the option. I have two faithful buyers I can barely keep up with, so I don't put out my yard sign anymore. I am in Kearns. just down from the High School. If you are close, perhaps I can send some buyers your way. I also have a (penciled) in plan to build a chicken abode next spring, but for now, just those amazing, sweet, funny poop makers DUCKIES! SO nice to see you here! Its canning season so I'm off, more than I'm on, but ill watch for you. I have learned to bottle MEAT this year, now it's a mission ;-) I found pork roast for 99 cents a pound. this could prolong my Drakes life so .....im processing a bunch.

That is a beautiful bird! I do not know thing one about modern game birds, but I am following your experience with great interest. I would very much like to spread my wings and experience many kinds of fowl. Please do not hesitate to share here, what you learn in the process.
Im sure the chicken ppl won't mind ;-)
PS it is surprising how many things I find in my adult life that fit under the Las Vegas slogan.......

Thanks! My duck free range all day, they eat all of my bugs, and most of the plants in my garden :) I supplement their diet with feed at night, but they would much rather forage. Eating duck eggs took a little getting used to, I admit, but now my kids can't even tell the difference. We haven't had chicken eggs in months, and I've fed the eggs to dozens of family members at camp outs, and they couldn't tell the difference either. The duckies have a house that they get locked up in at night, we are right by the Jordan River, so we have a lot of predators in our area. Last month my neighbor lost 13 chickens in one night. Scary! I'm in Riverton, but my two Welsh Harlequins came from Spanish Fork :) I got them this year as adult ducks, and they are wonderful birds.

wow that is cool you know how to bottle meat. such a useful skill to have. a little bit of a unsolisated tip for you on buying meat for cheap, look into the mexican markets like rancho market, they have super cheap stuff and if you dont like the quality of it take the ad into walmart or some other place that price matches that might have a bit better quality. you can get produce and such for the chickens/ducks too for super cheap this way too if you want to give them a special treat :)
