Utah!

Lisa, not sure if you have the time, but the NYD hatch a long is really fun. You could skip Christmas and have the New Years babies. I think Christmas babies would be fun too though.

Good thing I'm running out of options for room out there!

Okay I forgot who asked, I'm sorry, but I forgot to answer your post about the age of my Cornish X's. Yep, they are getting pretty old for the breed. Eight months, I believe. We let them free range a lot and I think that's part of why they've been so healthy for so long. So really, the one girl that keeled over was getting up there in age. I hadn't realized this until you posed the question.

With the colder and shorter days, does Egg production slow down or suddenly stop? My 7 mo black sex link suddenly stopped. It's been 4 days and until now was on a regular daily lay schedule. She is acting normal. My 7 mo BO has slowed to every other day. I have an 7 mo astralorp that has yet to lay or crow. DH calls her a free loader

With all the overcast days last week, I am finding many freeloaders in my group ;D They better snap out of it!
Yes, they may slow down or stop when they feel the chill :D

Cynthia, glad you have some eggs rocking and rolling. The bigger blues were from my one 1/2 yr olds, I should have just sent all pullet eggs. I know you like those big ones though, dang, I was hoping they were fertile. My roo likes the newbies most, it is quite obvious when we go out to see them in the morning. Cradle robber. LOL sure hoping you get splash girl from the Marans. Yes, debating that NYD hatch along! Stop me now!

Do they free range in the yard? Had a leghorn do that to me, an egg a day. Looked all over the yard. Then one day, went out early with treats, called them, and out she popped from behind a tarp that was covering something of my husbands. Sure enough, 9 eggs. Little stink. Had to put something of the tarp to keep her out of there.

My egg production seems mostly tied to temperature. If it's cold (like in the 20s or below) egg production goes way down since the chickens are tryin to keep wam. Upper 30s and things are mostly normal. You might try feeding a higher protein content feed in winter if you aren't already. My girls did ok last year on that 20% layer feed that ifa has.
