Utah!

My hens that are molting right now have been doing it gradually since October and don't have any bare spots. I posted on here a while ago about one of my BA's who had more skin exposed than feathers (a result of feather picking and a fox attack) and how she survived the winter last year. She went outside during the coldest days - she didn't stay out for long stretches of time, but neither did any of the feathered ones. She started molting in October too and now she's fully feathered and gorgeous. When she began molting, she looked like a porcupine as all her feathers were coming in at once. Maybe when they drop a lot of feathers at once the new ones come in faster? I don't know if it's a breed characteristic or a cause and effect thing since she was so bare they all came in at once. As far as this year goes, so far all of mine aren't spending much time outside during this cold snap we're having. They do have the option though. One thing I read on here was that some people give black oil sunflower seed during the molt to give added protein. I add BOSS to their scratch so they get it everyday, but when my featherless chicken was going through her molt, I threw out double the BOSS and everyone has very shiny, healthy looking feathers. How is your hen doing? Are the new feathers coming in yet? We don't heat our coop, but we did run an extension cord up there to hook up a heater for under the waterer. I think it's adding to the warmth in the coop because when I go in there in the mornings, even with the single digits we've been having, it has been about 33 degrees or so inside the coop.

I wouldn't be so worried about Lola if this was a gradual molt, but she's dropped almost all of her feathers at once - her neck, back, belly, and rump are all so bare and cold looking. One day she was laying and looked normal, the next day she stopped laying and the coop was full of feathers. The feathers on her neck and back are starting to come back in (looks itchy).

I guess I'm off to buy some BOSS. And a heated waterer - what type to you use? I saw some in CAL-Ranch and IFA, but don't know what kind to get.

thanks!

I have a galvanized steel waterer (I think 3 gallon, could be 5, not sure), that sits on a galvanized base that plugs in to the outlet. I got mine at IFA together. So far the base seems to be doing a great job. The water seems fine, and It's definitely been below freezing. There were icicles hanging off the feeder next to the waterer (from splashback), but the water wasn't frozen in the waterer itself.

I have the same set up as boots - 3 gallon galvanized waterer with galvanized base and it's been great. We put 2 cinder blocks side by sideon the floor of the coop to support the heater, then put the heater on top of the blocks, then the waterer on top of the heater. It's high so shavings don't get kicked in it, but not too high that they can't reach it. I'll have to ask my husband where he got ours - it was either CalRanch or IFA. Maybe you could make Lola a little fleece covering until more of her feathers come back in. I've seen some on the web when I was considering making one for our Phoebe. There's even a knitted pattern too! One pattern I saw was to cut out a rectangle of fleece with holes cut out for the legs and then you could attach it on the underside with velcro or snaps or even elastic that was sewn on each side just to hold it on her back. Good luck - here's wishing her feathers grow in FAST!

So, I have a question. What exactly is "organic" feed?

IFA sells non-medicated 20% protien laying mash, which is what I buy. I asked the guy at IFA if it was organic, and he looked at me a little strange and said they don't add anything in, and it's just different grains added and ground up. So he said he thinks it's organic

So, what would I be buying if I paid more $$ for "organic" feed?

To add to what Pacs said, I know that my Purina feed is 100% vegetarian feed too. Is the Organic feed also vegetarian?

Too many people are jumping on the "Organic" bandwagon, IMHO. We're already raising our own chickens for eggs / pets / food. We know they're not getting massive hormone injections or medications, etc. How much of a difference will this Organic vs Normal IFA feed really make?

Just my musings.

We're fighting the Clinton City planning commission right now trying to get our city ordinance changed. I posted some information on another thread about something from the Extension Poultry Expert which will be attending a meeting tonight (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=276415), so if anyone here has thoughts on that to share it would be wonderful.

The planning commission is trying very hard to show that we're big time, trying to bring in high rise apartment buildings and attempting to place a lot of restrictions even down to business and house colors (I guess there was a 20 minute discussion at a meeting a few weeks ago about whether or not a newer business had chosen it's color within the given boundaries). What they don't want to recognize is that people move to Clinton for the rural feel, while still being close to places that are more urban.

The next planning commission meeting is tonight. Any suggestions to help our cause would be great!
