Marty - You could try pin-less peepers. Makes it harder to be pecked.

Our runty one also happens to be the meanest so we're happy she's small. She doesn't get picked on all that much, but she's a holy terror to any chicken that sits beneath her in the pecking order.

Oftentimes, feather picking also means that they don't have enough room or have a nutrient deficiency. If you can't give them more room, maybe try hanging a head of cabbage to reduce boredom. Our ladies LOVE cabbage. Beware though, purple cabbage turns their poops neon colors.

Here's the space suggestions I've been using;

New born to 1 month - 1/4 square foot per bird.
1 month to 2 months - 1/2 square foot per bird.

4 months to adult - 3 square feet per bird.

They have about double the space they're scheduled to have right now... They should have good food/water/protein

As far as my opinion on the SLW, I think selling her is humane. I had my Polish Roo getting picked on last year, and I tried all sorts of things to remedy it (rooster booster, gentian violet, cabbage, etc.). He ended up getting hounded to death, even though they all free range and could get away from each other.

Okay. So this is going to sound a bit silly. BUT - does anybody have eggs for sale? Our ladies eggs are a bit too popular and we nor my parents ever have any extra for our own consumption. I hate to go to the grocery store and buy eggs from caged chickens.

We've got eight laying regularly, one that just started two days ago and two more who are still trying to heal and are many weeks away.

I'd say if the chickens are laying on your property, you should get first dibs on your own eggs! But that's just me. I don't really sell eggs to regular customers yet, but when extras start piling up in the fridge, we box them up and the kids run them to a few neighbors who are really good friends. I may start charging them eventually, now that we've got them hooked on real eggs, but for now it's more of a trade - we give them eggs, they show up on our porch with marvelous things from their gardens.

Well, if you're willing to come to Utah County, we've got some extras - the gas $$ probably would be more than the eggs are worth, though. Let me know.

Zombie Chicken, you're pretty close to me! I'm just down 3900 S off 2000 E!

Looks like I have to wait to get my chickens. We ordered the Eggloo Cube from omlet and they only send them over from the UK twice a year. so I'll be starting in June! Seems like sOOOO long away. But it gives me more time to keep researching all my dumb questions

Okay new dumb question of the day: How do you keep your dogs from terrorizing your chickens? Our girls will have a coop but the dogs can see into it...so probably just a worry but hey, I'll ask anything.
